1 Partial electivity: students choose the course from those offered at the History Department covering modern Croatian history. The Chair plan to employ an external lecturer who would teach a course entitled the “Hungarian History Overview.” The grade point of this course, as its weekly load, depends on the concrete offer by the History Dept. We suggest both for future generations, when preconditions for this course have been met.

Hungarian Studies Graduate Programme

Duration of programme, academic titles: the Hungarian Studies graduate programme lasts for

10 semesters and ends with a thesis, which the student earns the title of the “Master of Arts in

Hungarian Studies” with. The student that does not opt for this must take the final exam that

encompasses cumulative knowledge of Hungarian language and literature (that is based on

Language Classes and courses in Contemporary Hungarian and Hungarian literature).

Requirements for graduate study: successful undergraduate Hungarian Studies programme at

the Zagreb Faculty of Philosophy or any other world institution of higher education with a

comparable programme.

Graduate study objectives: the graduate study enables the student for beginner scholarly work in

the field of Hungarian Studies or for employment in the cultural sector (translation, publishing),

media, diplomacy or economy – where a degree of education, linguistic, scholarly and

methodological competence gained through studying at the Hungarian Studies graduate level is

needed. Most attention is given to acquiring linguistic competence because of its being a

prerequisite for work both in scholarly Hungarian Studies work and other jobs that require

knowledge of Hungarian Studies. Therefore all graduate students must pass all compulsory exams

(language and literature) regardless of their choice of the Master’s thesis topic.

Compulsory courses in the graduate programme are organized e v e r y o t h e r y e a r in the

apply to Language and Translation Classes that take place e v e r y y e a r in appropriate

semesters.

All graduate students (4th and 5th year) take the elective discipline courses together. These course

are n o t o r g a n i z e d every year or in every semester: in a single semester, the maximum is

three from different areas (literary contacts study, linguistic contacts study, translation and

communication) – according to future personnel possibilities of the Hungarian Chair, i.e.

according to the number of students interested in certain courses in a given semester.

(Cf. notes at the end of the document!)

A compulsory component part of the graduate programme is a one-semster scholarship

programme at one of Hungarian univeristies, during the last 4 semesters. Points gathered there

students certify into their student books; with previous arrangements with the literature and

language professors at the Chair as to which courses can be recognized according to the ETCS

scheme after the return.

The programme also incorporates field work that is exercised during an excursion into Hungary.

Current Conditions

1. Space: The Hungarian Studies Chair is currently situated in Room B001, and shares a rather small Room

B002 with other chairs of its Department. The classes take place in two Halls (A 217 and A 205)

that we share with four more study groups (Turkish Studies, Indian Studies, Japanese Studies and

Israeli Studies). For performing its tasks the Chair currently employs seven associates: one senior

assistant and one lector and one contract lector in a full-time arrangement, and two guest lecturers

and two external associates.

The sheer number of personnel makes clear that space conditions are extremely inadequate both

for quality classwork and for the existing programme. The Chair cannot ensure classroom work

according to new programme proposal under given circumstances, for the following reasons:

- The Room B001 contains all Chair books and therefore our librarian must work in it, together

with students borrowing books

- Because of the fact that we share classroom work space with four other study groups, we are

obliged to hold certain seminars in Room B001

- The same room must host our teachers as well, who perform their extra-curriculum work and

consultations in it – all of which renders the situation almost impossible, especially during exam

periods

This makes clear the fact that the Hungarian Studies Chair in current space conditions will not be

able to perform the functions envisioned in the new programme proposal.

On one hand, we lack rooms for individual/consultative/mentor work with students; therefore the

Hungarian Studies Chair needs at least one more room with two workplaces.

On the other hand we demand expanding space for performing classroom work for larger student

groups – given the fact that certain courses, according to new programme proposal, are to be

performed in a cummulative fashion, combining several study years.

4. Optimal Student Number:

We think the number of students should not in future be increased.

5. Development:

Successful rendering of envisioned courses according to the new Hungarian Studies programme

proposal is possible only with an increase in staff. Two assistant and one scholarly-teaching posts are

needed for this. Until then, in order to ensure the full offer of compulsory and elective courses, it is

necessary to ensure an external associate post that would employ various teachers in turn for particular

semesters, depending on courses planned for that semester.
