An environment of civil war and harsh

government censorship proved unsuitable

for typographicinnovation. It got to

extremes when Charles II assumed the

throne and decreed that there be no more

than 20 printers or death. I n such hostile

circumstances, the typeface family Caslon

was designed by English native William

Caslon I in 1734.
