Dear Parents / Carers,
Everyone has settled back into our school routines very well. Our staff started the term with a professional learning day run by the Berry Street Childhood Institute. This training is based on a range of classroom strategies, informed by Berry Street’s approaches to trauma-informed learning and the science of wellbeing. Your children may have mentioned ‘morning circle’ and ‘brain breaks’! These activities and teaching practices are aimed at engaging students in their learning and improving their academic progress and outcomes. Our staff will continue their learning next term on the Staff Development Day (22/07/2019) followed by further sessions next year. Yesterday we had a Dress-Up Day with our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) whole school reward program. Last term, our students collected enough PBL tickets and were able to come to school today dressed in something beginning with a ‘P’, ‘B’ or ‘L’ or, in our PBL colours of orange green and/or purple. We had a large collection of princesses, policemen and policewomen and pirates! Some of the students wrote and drew pictures of the day. I had some visitors from 1Mc come to my office and share their learning. Have a look at these fabulous drawings from Braylen and Laura in Year 1Mc.

Our P&C hosted a Mother’s Day BBQ on Thursday. It was great to see so many of our families attending and enjoying the tasty egg and bacon rolls with tea and coffee. Thanks to our P&C for organising this event. This is one way that our P&C raise funds that are used to buy resources and equipment for our school. The next fundraiser will be on the Federal Election day, Saturday 18 May 2019. Volunteers are all welcome to support our P&C with another BBQ, operating from 8am until 12noon. – or come along and buy a burger as you go in to vote!

ANZAC Day
Today we have had a large contingent of our students representing Hume at the PSSA Zone Athletics. Good luck to all of our athletes! Next week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will begin NAPLAN testing. Students will participate in assessments in Literacy (Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar) and Numeracy. NAPLAN testing is completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. The results provide information on how students are progressing and support improvements in teaching and learning. If you have any questions about the NAPLAN testing, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher for further information. Hume Public again welcomes students from Charles Sturt into our school. Each year Speech Pathology students offer support to identified students throughout the school, encouraging literacy development and learning specific to each student. We appreciate their commitment to our students and look forward to their continued support throughout the term. Best wishes to all mothers, grandmothers and carers for Mother’s Day this Sunday. I hope you have a lovely day with your families.
