Humana People to People - Schools for Children Some 5.2 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa became orphans in 2003. The need for homes and schools for street children and orphans is so huge, that it is an international and global responsibility. Humana People to People’s member associations in Southern Africa started in the 1980’s to respond by establishing the first schools for children, who had not started school because they had been displaced by wars or because of lack of schools. Today there are 13 schools for children, who are orphans, street children or children with difficulties. Humana People to People’s Schools for Children started as part of Child Aid programs in 1990, targeting street children from some of the largest cities. The idea was to create a new home, and to increase the primary school possibilities of the children, many had dropped out of school. In both Angola and Mozambique the wars had resulted in many children being displaced in their own country. Since that time the situation for many children has changed. In addition to taking care of abandoned children, another need has risen: to take care of the many children orphaned by AIDS. Humana People to People - Schools for Children

Some 5.2 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa became orphans in 2003.

The table below shows the number of Children’s Towns and Street Children’s Schools in Mozambique, Angola, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe that Humana People to People have set up.
