• A trafficker’s main goal is to make big money.

• This is a crime that is happening globally.

• Are government officials participants?

• Enforcement can be difficult.

• Cases are hard to prove due to lack of witnesses.

• It is related to gangs, crime networks, corrupt people, brothel owners and so on.

• Promises of pleasure, money and use of persuasion are used.

CAUSES

The sex industry is mainly females and children. It happens locally and throughout the United States. The average girl is 12-14 years old. For boys, the age is 11-13 years old. The Trafficking Victims Protection Act in 2000, brought self-awareness programs, monitoring, sanction programs and protection. Many organizations are combatting this crime.

Page 8: Human trafficking.langevoort l

Anti-trafficking programs help victims by putting victims in contact with legal services, community-based organizations, law enforcement and government agencies and health care practitioners.

They constantly work towards rights for trafficked persons.

Prevention is a means of cutting down on human trafficking. We cannot sweep it under the rug! If it were happening to people in your community or neighborhood would you ignore it? Help to prevent a tragedy from happening or someone from becoming another victim. Use the techniques of self-awareness to combat this horrific crime. You can help!
