Amnesty International and other Human Rights Organisations help in the protection of human rights.

In 1960, Amnesty International was started by a lawyer who read that a few Portuguese students had been sentenced to prison for 7 years for merely ‘toasting’ to freedom..He was outraged by their human rights being overlooked and founded ‘Amnesty International’. The word ‘Amnesty’ means ‘an official pardon’ Amnesty International fights for the rights of peoplewhose human rights have been violated.

Shaker AamerImprisoned in Guantanamo Bay without trial for 13 years.

Post 9/11 CIA interrogation has frequently entailed ‘detention’ with no charge. The torture described by detainees is not dissimilar to methods employed by the Nazis during World War 2…Shaker Aamer maintains that British agents (MI5) were present while he was being interrogated by the CIA. He has always said he was innocent.

Amnesty InternationalSuccessfully fought for Shaker to be released.
