1. You are to prepare a CV and cover letter to apply to the University of Witwatersrand. You will be applying for a scholarship: a degree in the field of your choice.

2. The dean of your chosen faculty will call your for a 5 minute interview.

3. Convince them why your academics, awards, extra curricula activities, charity contributions and long term goals would make you the most suitable person for this scholarship.

Preparing a CV

• Step 1 – Think (what am I trying to tell the dean, what’s relevant, and what isn’t, best way to communicate all of this i.e. colours, fonts, spacing etc)?

• Step 2 – Tell a story (Schools attended, subjects learned, projects done, grades achieved, awards won, sports played, honours achieved in sports, charity work done)

• Step 3 – Demonstrate (The dean wants to know if you can do the following: you can manage yourself, you can lead as well as work in a team, solve problems as well as communicate)

Preparing for your Interview

• Demonstrate the competency and behaviours that you have (e.g. team work, problem solving, get things done etc)

• Always give examples

• STAR answer (Situation, Task, Action and Result)

• Keep it short and simple, if you can only talk for maximum 3 minutes per answer.

• Give an example of when you've overcome a problem at work.• Answer: I have not really encountered many problems with work as this will be my

first time in full-time work, though I do have deadlines to meet both at work in my part-time job and also in college. At college I have deadlines to meet and have tasks that need to be completed; these are often challenging, so I plan my time around them and also do what I can to deliver the best and highest quality work.
