Ziya Griffin’s life andidentity has been shapedthrough culture andreligion. She has strongbeliefs and values onfamily, Christianity andher country. Ziya has livedin America for 10 yearsuntil she came to Hanoifrom New Jersey. Ziya isvery religious, at one pointin the interview, shestated “I’d say thatreligion is a great part ofculture, it’s a huge part tome of culture and I’d saythat religion has shapedme”.

“What are some of your favorite foods?” and“What are the most important Americanholidays?” were the first 2 questions. In question3 she exclaimed that religion, her flag and thenational anthem were the most important partof her culture. Later in the interview she statedthat she believes that the most important partsof the 4th of July were spending time with familyand friends. The other questions dug deeper into whatculture is to Ziya. When I asked her “How hasculture shaped your identity?” To my surprise,she answered religion. Other times I asked her“What is one law you disagree with and why?”Her answer was “I disagree with executionbecause I think that everybody deserves to liveeven though they did something bad. If theykilled a bunch of people they should not die

because they deserve to change and if they diethey won’t be able to change. They can becomea better person and even though peopledisagree with me, I think that execution is not agood law.” I also asked her about how she felt about leavingAmerica and how it has changed to her. “I stillfeel that America is still the great country that Ileft and a great country along with others. I thinkthat I enjoy it more now, I think that it’s just agreat place to be,” Ziya said. She also believesthat “Family is huge part of and culture to me”. Ziya Griffin’s main values include beliefs in herreligion, strong bonds with her family andimportant values about her country. Culture hasshaped Ziya Griffin’s life and identity withpassion and belief.
