WE LCOM E Welcome to the triumphant return of the Hull City Hall Classics series in partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Hull Philharmonic Orchestra.

In an exciting first for the series, the opening two concerts of the season will be held at our sister venue Hull New Theatre in order for Hull City Hall to complete its important role as a Covid-19 vaccination centre.

These concerts are part of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s 75th Anniversary Season. Passion, versatility and uncompromising artistic standards,

as well as a belief that music is a gift that can bring people together and inspire positive change, have been RPO hallmarks for the past 75 years. As we embark on the next exciting chapter, the RPO invites you to join the journey and share the thrill of live orchestral music.

Alongside this anniversary season, the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra programme includes favourites requested by players and supporters, plus the farewell concert from renowned conductor Andrew Penny, who has made a huge contribution to orchestral music at Hull City Hall over the last 40 years.

We look forward to seeing you at our venues soon.

Returning to Hull City Hall with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is the ‘passionate, eloquent’ (The Independent) soloist Chloë Hanslip, who is no stranger to this Romantic violin favourite.

In the second half of the concert, the Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Ben Gernon, will performa Dvořák’s Symphony No.8. It is a piece that is brought to life with its lyricism and use of melody, giving a dance-like sense of joy through the woodwind and moments of provocative power in the strings.

Alexander Shelley Conductor Fumiaki Miura Violin

MENDELSSOHN A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Scherzo, Nocturne and Wedding March PROKOFIEV Violin Concerto No.2 RAVEL Mother Goose: Suite STRAVINSKY The Firebird: Suite

Explore enchanting worlds with the RPO’s Principal Associate Conductor, Alexander Shelley. Mendelssohn captures the wonder and wit of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, whilst Ravel’s characterful Suite from Mother Goose embraces the joyful world of childhood fairytales. Stravinsky’s ballet score for The Firebird uses spellbinding music to tell a tale of a glowing Firebird, magical feathers, princesses, princes and palaces.

A contemporary of Ravel and Stravinsky, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.2 ranges from unashamed lyricism to a thrillingly energetic finale – the perfect showpiece for Japanese virtuoso, Fumiaki Miura (RPO Artist-in-Residence, 2021–22).

Jan Latham-Koenig Conductor Pyotr Akulov Piano

TCHAIKOVSKY Marche Slave RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.2 MUSSORGSKY orch Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition

The renowned Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow presents a vibrant programme of Russian favourites. Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Marche Slave leads into Rachmaninov’s ever-popular Piano Concerto No.2, performed by rising young star, Pyotr Akulov.

Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition takes listeners on a musical tour of an art gallery. This series of musical pictures ranges from the quiet lyricism of The Old Castle to the sonic splendour of The Great Gate of Kiev, taking in clucking unhatched chicks and the terrifying witch Baba Yaga along way.

WEBER Oberon: Overture BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No.4 BEETHOVEN Symphony No.3, ‘Eroica’

Award-winning conductor Kerem Hasan joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’. This ground-breaking symphony is filled the spirit of heroism from its grand opening to the last burst of orchestral brilliance, perfectly capturing the spirit of the Romantic imagination.

Opening the concert, Weber’s magical Overture to Oberon sets the scene for Beethoven’s uplifting Piano Concerto No.4, performed by Fumiya Koido, winner of the 2019 Hastings International Piano Competition.

Programme to include: MOZART The Magic Flute: Overture MOZART Requiem

Celebrate the sheer genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in a programme that explores the wealth of colours and moods within his music. Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute gives us a perfect taste of the energy and adventure of his most successful opera. Endlessly inventive, it shows us the darkness and light of the story, with an infectiously excitable conclusion.

Mozart’s Requiem offers a chance for reflection, showing a darker side to his writing. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra unites with the Leeds Philharmonic Choir for this powerful yet poignant masterpiece.
