Welcome to the seventh Humber Business Week Still the biggest event of its type anywhere in the world!

This year organisations from the private, public and voluntary sectors have come together to present over 30 events in a week-long showcase of the best practice and opportunities the region has to offer. This culminates with the sparkling finale of the Yorkshire International Business Convention (YIBC) which this year has a "winners" theme.

Business Week 2011 comes at a very exciting time with some tremendous opportunities for the Hull and Humber to become the heart of the European renewables industry. This is a theme strongly represented in the programme of events this year as we send out the message the rest of the world that Hull is very much open for sustainable business.

You may or may not be aware that this year’s Business Week is presented by a new team. Hull and East Yorkshire Community Foundation had no hesitation in volunteering to help take this amazing event forward and are delighted to be doing so alongside communications partner eskimosoup. We are supported by a dedicated and passionate steering group, as well as a strong group of stakeholders whose collaborative working makes our event the envy of other regions.

Finally, with the honour of taking on the mantle of the Business Week we must pay tribute to the team that have grown this event to become what we see today. Business Week is the brainchild of Paul Sewell whose vision has been the foundation upon which this great event has been built. The event has gone from strength-to-strength in no small part thanks to the drive and hard work of Mike Firth and Kate Carroll. We are honoured that you have trusted us to look after your “baby” and know that you still have an important role to play in shaping its future.

We are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker on the 10th June will be the British World Wide Web inventor -Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Sir Tim created the web in 1989, paving the way for people today to have access to more than 225 million web sites, triggering a revolution in the way information is consumed and business is done.

The web has fundamentally changed the way we communicate, socialise, shop, learn, work and play. It’s no exaggeration to say he is someone who has changed the way we think as well as the way we live and to have a chance to hear his views on the future of the web is a fantastic opportunity both personally and from a business perspective.

This year’s theme will be ‘Winners’ and we have two exceptional sportsmen. Andrew Strauss, captain of the Ashes winning England Cricket Team and Sean Fitzpatrick, ex. captain of the all conquering All Blacks.

Monty Halls makes a return visit to tell us of his latest adventures and Caroline Marsh, property entrepreneur and ‘Secret Millionaire’ will share the secrets of her success. Terry Hill ex.

Chairman of Arup will tell us how it’s ‘ownership structure’ has been a springboard to it’s global success.

All our speakers will attend the prestigious Black Tie Dinner at Harewood House on the evening of the Convention.

As Chair of the Humber Economic Partnership (“HEP”) it is a particular pleasure to contribute to the Bizweek brochure as HEP, sadly, winds down its activities, Bizweek has enjoyed very significant levels of public sector support over the years and this facilitated its development from a week comprising a mere six Hull based events a few years ago to the 2011 week which will comprise over 30 events spread far and wide throughout the Humber region.

In recent years HEP has played a pivotal role in supporting and coordinating this development and we at HEP have been proud to be a part of the Bizweek initiative under the leadership of Paul Sewell. Paul is standing down from this role in 2011 and we should all acknowledge all that he has done to ensure the development of Bizweek into the success it now is.

The pressures on public sector finance are well trailed and it is inevitable that public sector financial support for the week has declined although support in kind continues including the promotion of several Bizweek events.

It is therefore encouraging that the private sector has stepped up to the plate to fill the void created by the reduction in the public sector contribution to the Week. As we move towards the Olympic year I am confident that the torch has been passed to those who will ensure the continued success of Bizweek in years to come and, on a personal level, I am delighted that I have been asked to be part of this process.

The morning session will see keynote speakers present the current condition of the economy and predictions for the forthcoming months.

IoD Humber Luncheon with Gyles Brandreth

The Institute of Directors East Yorkshire (Humber) branch is delighted to present special guest Gyles Brandreth at their annual lunch as the branch supports Business Week for the fourth consecutive year.

Hull has the potential to become the capital for renewable energy, not just for the UK but also, potentially, for Europe. With the proposed Green Port Hull development on the horizon, the green agenda is one that is becoming central to the future plans of many local businesses.

Accordingly, Hull City Council has organised a Green City Hull event which is aimed at giving businesses an up-to-date look and practical knowledge of what opportunities exist and what other ideas are being worked on. The event starts at 9.30am with a mini-expo with a broad range of key partners providing information for businesses including contributions from ARC, The Renewables Network, HOTA, Hull College, Footprint Renewables, the University of Hull, CO2Sense and the Patt Foundation amongst others.

Without strong delivery structures, sufficient resources and a lasting commitment to tackling inter-regional disparities, the prospects for the North look worryingly bleak, according to research published in the recent Smith Institute report ‘Rebalancing the economy: prospects for the North’. Focusing on the Government’s pledge to rebalance the economy, it highlights the serious implications of cutting regional funding.

Against this backdrop, we look at the opportunities presented by substantial investment in renewables on the Humber to embed sustainable value.

The report’s author, Michael Ward, will set out the context of his recommendations and his views on the consequences for the Humber region given the closure of the RDAs, the current absence of a Local Enterprise Partnership, Enterprise Zone implications and limited funding.

In response, Professor John Leach from the University of Hull will set out his views on how local businesses can play a key role in ensuring that the value created by this investment is captured for the long term sustainable prosperity of the region.

This year HCF is delighted to present Humber Renewables Network guide to solar energy- Bring Me Sunshine. The event will be held at HCF’s unique training facility – CATCH in Stallingborough, North East Lincolnshire. Training market leader, HOTA, is opening its newly expanded training facility in June.This new facility will include a purpose built training structure for Working at Height and IRATA Approved Rope Access training, delivered by Total Access(UK)Ltd, another market leader in this particular field.

The collaboration between these organisations will transform the current training available for the renewable sector.

On HOTA’s Albert Dock site, an existing 22 metre high tower will provide a unique training facility in the UK by bringing together the expertise of HOTA and Total Access to deliver both Marine and land based training to satisfy the renewable training market.

There will be ample opportunity to tour all the facilities at HOTA including the expanded First Aid and Electrical Training Suites and staff will be available for questions. Refreshments will also be available.

The Humber Ports comprise the fourth largest ports complex in northern Europe, and the UK’s largest by tonnage, handling over 91 million tonnes in 2008. The Humber estuary accounts for 16% of the UK’s maritime trade and employs 47,000 people both directly and indirectly through port-related activity. Goole is the UK’s biggest inland port.

The ports and logistics area is driving forward the development of the renewable energy sector, providing opportunities for biofuels, wind energy, biomass and tidal technologies, together with carbon capture and storage opportunities.

Sunday Times Top Ten employer, the Sewell Group, will open the doors to their Sewell Studio to provide an insight into how they engage their people.

The Business Week Charitable Foundation

Business Week 2011 will see the launch of an exciting new venture - the

Business Week Charitable Foundation. The Business Week Charitable

Foundation is a new approach to supporting local activities and addressing

local need. Although launched in Business Week, the Charitable Foundation

will be active throughout the year and will provide a mechanism to direct

resources where they are needed most as well as building a sustainable

source of funding for local community activity in years to come.

The Business Week Charitable Foundation will be operated through Hull

and East Yorkshire Community Foundation (registered charity no. 1130700)

and will be managed by a Steering Group made up of Business Week

stakeholders. This will ensure that resources are directed where they can

have the most impact and also that the Charitable Foundation is wholly

accountable to the Business Week community. Business Week Stakeholders

will receive regular updates regarding the Charitable Foundation as well as

opportunities to see firsthand the impact it is having in the local community.

In order to support the Charitable Foundation, there will be fundraising events

and activities throughout Business Week itself (and beyond) as well as an

opportunity for you to donate directly either through Hull and East Yorkshire

Community Foundation or through the website.
