MICHELE WANGT H E D E S I G N E R
I love designing and how it allows me a bit of
escapism. I always keep the knitter in my mind.
I like forming an image of the person who would
buy the yarn I’m using or read the publication
where my design will appear and I like to keep this
image at the forefront so I can design for them.
I’ve always been interested in fashion design,
but I ended up studying something much more
practical in college. Afterwards, I immediately
began taking fashion design classes at Parsons and
later at FIT. So when I started knitting years later,
my worlds collided. I started sample knitting and it
was then that the possibility of becoming a hand
knitwear designer presented itself.
I was very drawn to the concept of The Yarn
Collective. As a designer, we are often given
the yarn to use for a design, however The Yarn
Collective was giving me the opportunity to help
create the yarn itself, as well as the designs to
support it! That was the most exciting part. Being
“
”
a part of the yarn creation allowed me to have
more control over the design process from the very
beginning and the ability to create a yarn for the
knits I like to create.
It’s been such a luxury to be involved with the
creation of the yarn. Oftentimes I have to spend
a while getting to know a yarn and whether or
not it will work for a particular idea, as well as
understanding how the yarn will behave. On top of
that, I was thrilled by being able to pick the colors
too. I don’t often incorporate a lot of colors or color
work into my designs as I prefer to use textures and
I find colors to be very polarizing. I like the design
to speak for itself. But I have to admit that working
to find the right colors for Hudson was such a
pleasure. Because of the yak content, all the colors
appear heathered which is absolutely perfect for
the mood I wanted to convey.

“The inspiration for the color range were colors I would see up the Hudson
Valley in New York. As a child, I would go every Fall for apple picking. And
as an adult, I would go every October for the Sheep & Wool Festival in
Rhinebeck. For anyone who has had the privilege to see the changing leaves
along the Hudson River, you know those are colors you’ll never forget.”

“The Hudson Line on the Metro-North Railroad is
one of the most scenic. It follows along the east
side of the river and the landscape that opens up is
an instant cure to the stresses of the city. On a clear,
crisp day the skies and the water of the Hudson
are rich blues. And on more typical overcast chillier
days, the water reflects the beautiful stormy grays”

CHANGING LEAVES | KINGSTON ARMY GREEN, TARRAPIN PUMPKIN, BEACON NATURAL & SPRINGWOOD EMERALD
“As the leaves start to change, a hint of the lush landscape from the Summer still peaks through. The
greens that are just starting to change and have the smallest hint of yellow is one of the richest colors. And
of course, at peak season the bold oranges are simply awe-inspiring.”
APPLES | COLD SPRING CHALKBOARD GREEN, OLANA OCHRE & CORTLAND AMORINO RED
“Apple-picking is one of the greatest pleasures along the Hudson either on the West or East side of the river.
These precious gems mingling within the changing leaves are truly treasures to behold.“

THE YARNH O W I T ’ S M A D E
Yak fibre is taken from the coat of the Yak - a
long shaggy haired herd animal that lives in
mountainous regions of Central Asia.
The Yak fibre in Hudson is very fine and has the
same softness, warmth and lustre as cashmere.
Yak when blended with the extra fine merino adds
extra softness and high lustre to the blend.
When knitted up the Hudson takes stitch detail
beautifully and creates wonderful garments and
accessories that will wash and wear extremely well.
SPINNING
First the two fibres (yak and merino) are
intimately blended together. Then this
combined fibre is spun using the worsted
spinning method. This results in 8 plys which
are then twisted to create a worsted weight
knitting yarn. The next stage is to take the
yarn from cone to large hanks for dyeing in
Michele’s palette of saturated shades. In the
dyeing process the merino wool and the
dark fibre of the yak take the dye slightly
differently resulting in the special melange
colour effect.

PATTERN DESIGNI N S P I R AT I O N & P R O C E S S E S
While I am usually inspired by the knitter, the pieces
I designed were wholly inspired by Hudson, the
yarn itself. I wanted to showcase the yarn as best
as I could and this yarn is made for cables. It’s so
plump and round that the cables spring to life.
As for the silhouettes, I love pullovers for the Fall
and Winter seasons. They make me feel cocooned
and ready for a cozy night in. As for the neckwear,
I wanted something that was unisex. Scarves are
such popular projects for men and although a small
project, I wanted to make sure men were included.
