Hudson a Hotbed of Theatre, by Bert MarkgrafBetween the professional Village Theatre productions, productions by other professional companies and

the Hudson Players Club and Music Club community theatre groups, Hudson has more going on in theatrethan many small cities. This summer has seen two excellent productions and this fall will see a new andexciting initiative from a new Hudson-based theatre company.

Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” isa difficult play to stage well but theHudson Players Club production madethe most of their lakeside setting toput on an excellent show. Directed bytheatre veteran Mary Vuorela withmusic by Roy Vuorela as part of theannual Shakespeare by the Lakeseries, great casting, acting andcostumes kept the audience en-thralled. The young romatic couple isgracing the cover of this issue andformer Players Club president DianaGausden, shown in the accompanyingphotograph, took on the male role ofProspero as Prospera.

Over at Village Theatre, anotherdifficult play was staged successfullybased on great acting and tight direct-ing. Read Kathryn Lamb’s review onpage 7.

The most exciting theatre eventof the year is yet to come. New Hud-son-based theatre company

ClockMaster, run by Glen Robinson,will be producing the David FennarioPlay “Fessenden Follies” as a steampunk review.

Montrealtheatre icon DavidFennario wrote theplay detailing thework of CanadianReginald AubreyFessenden whopioneered thewireless transmis-sion of the humanvoice. Fessendenwas born in theQuebec EasternTownships in 1866and was instrumen-tal in the develop-ment of radiotrasmission technol-ogy, first for Morsecode and then forvoices. He solved

some of the problems fellow-inventorMarconi was having with Morse codetransmission via radio waves and wasin fact the first person to transmit the

company has reserved the HudsonVillage Theatre for a two-week worldpremiere run from Thursday Novem-ber 8th to Sunday November 18th.

To make this a productionworthy of the first run of a DavidFennario play, the company hasrecruited top local talent for key roles.Textile artist Tina Struthers will designand produce the steam punk costumesfor the show. As well as creatingtextile art as independent pieces, Tinahas designed costumes for the “Mid-Summer Nights Dream” production ofthe Players Club and the “Peter PanPantomime” for Village Theatre.Further afield, she has designedcostumes for “The Hobbit” at theGrand Theatre and several musicaland comedia del arte shows for Frenchtheatre. Her creations of the costumeson a steam punk theme for this showwill be worth seeing.

Centre Decor owner LeaDurocher will take on set design. Lea’sset designs date back to the verybeginnings of Village Theatre but oneof her most notable works was the setfor the Players Club production of the

Hudson resident Glen Robinson,who has been active in Hudson theatrefor many years, incorporated the newcompany last spring. ClockMasterProductions is a community driventheatre company that hires profes-sionals to work alongside volunteers,allowing it to put on large-cast showsat a reasonable cost. Professionaltheatre companies in Montreal haveused this configuration for some oftheir musical productions. Glen willdirect the new show and his creditsinclude directing the Village TheatrePantomime “Wizard of Oz” and theaward-winning Hudson Players Clubrevival of David Fennario’s“Balconville.”

The “Fessenden Follies” will bemounted as a steam punk review, andthe website at www.clockmaster.cahas extensive graphics to set the tone.A live band will accompany the actorsdressed in steam punk style in keep-ing with the steam punk theme. The

David Fennario play, “Balconville.” TheClub received an “Outstanding Com-munity Production” 2017 META (Mon-treal English Theatre Award) for thisshow and are hoping to repeat such asuccess.

The large cast includes EsmeTerry, Karen Delorme, Susan Corbett,Adele Reeves, Adam Recine and DavidAnderson. Tickets are already for saleon the Village Theatre website at$25.00 plus tax. They are likely to gofast for the theatre event of the fallseason.

Greenwood’s StoryFest 2018brings a world of insights to Hudson’s doorstepsby Julie Gedeon, special contributor

A world of interests will becovered during this autumn’s line-upof guest authors and other specialevents at Greenwood’s StoryFest. 

StoryFest first takes note of thissummer’s record-breaking heat bywelcoming Silver Donald Cameron,one of Canada’s most prominentenvironmental writers/journalists.

He’ll introduce GreenRights: TheHuman Right to a Healthy World, adocumentary that he wrote and hostsabout the powerful impact of this rightin Ecuador, Argentina, the Philippines,and the Netherlands.

The film also features thedramatic fight for environmental rightsin Canada and the United States. Thedocumentary builds on his bookWarrior Lawyers: From Manila toManhattan: Attorneys for the Earth,which he’ll also discuss. 

The festival next looks at sportshealth with iconic Canadiens’ goalieKen Dryden. The legendary Hab willdiscuss Game Change: The Life andDeath of Steve Montador and theFuture of Hockey. It is the latest ofnine books by the top 100 NHL player,former Member of Parliament, lawyer,

professor and, of course, accom-plished writer.

 StoryFest then features one of

Goodreads’ 40 Hottest Thrillers (2018)when Montreal author andlawyer Catherine McKenzie dis-cusses The Good Liar, her latestpsychological drama set in Chicago, aswell as her other global bestsellersthat have been translated into French,German, Portuguese, Czech and otherlanguages.

 Canadian literary legend and

Senator David Adams Richardssubsequently takes us to Mexicowhere a Canadian heiress experiencesunfortunate circumstances in his 17th

novel, Mary Cyr.The winner of theGiller Prize and the Governor-GeneralLiterary Award for both Fiction andNon-Fiction will be StoryFest’s break-fast guest this year. 

The festival then strikes aperfect chord by inviting Canadian andworld-renowned classical guitarist

Liona Boyd to share No Remedy forLove, the title of both her autobiogra-phy and latest CD. Her new memoirrelates how she lost her ability toperform at one point, the emotionalroller coaster of her divorce, pastloves including her relationship withPierre Elliott Trudeau, her experienceperforming for leaders around theworld, and the joy of learning how tosing.

Novelist, poet and TV writer ZoeWhittall prompts us to search insideourselves with her latest novel, TheBest Kind of People. What would wedo if we discovered that a person welove is capable of doing awful things?

Hamilton, the author of the Ava Leeseries popular in numerous countries.His latest book, The Imam of Tawi-Tawi, is his 11th Ava Lee novel. All ofthem have been optioned for moviesor television. Hamilton was recentlychosen by BBC Culture as one of thetop 10 crime/mystery/thriller authorsfrom the last 30 years to have on ourbookshelves. 

Michael Redhill generatedheadlines last year by winning the$100,000 Giller Prize when he onlyhad $411 left in his bank account. Hisprized novel, Bellevue Square, hasreaders chuckling as a Toronto womansearches for her double in KensingtonMarket. Redhill has garnered richpraise in Canada and abroad for hiswriting for some time: his Consolationnovel was long-listed for the ManBooker Prize, and his MartinSloane novel was a Giller finalist. 

Last but certainly not least,Alissa York will take us back to thedays of Darwin with her latest novel,

The Naturalist. It has amateur natural-ist Walter Ash unexpectedly returningto his forgotten Amazon birthplace.

The novel earned the 2017Canadian Authors Association Awardfor Fiction. York’s international acclaimincludes being on the long list for the2009 International IMPAC DublinLiterary Award and the Giller short listfor her earlier novel Effigy, along withseveral prizes for her short stories. 

Bilingual storyteller SylvainRivard will take the younger set intothe aboriginal world of engaging talesat StoryFest for Kids. 

StoryFest will also encouragestory creation by having auto-biographer Marjorie Simmins, whorecently authored Year of theHorse about her love of and mishapswith horses, lead the Let’s Write aMemoir workshop. 

There’s also Movie Night (andDay), featuring The Children Act,starring Emma Thompson and StanleyTucci, which is held in partnership with

the Hudson Film Society.

Parrydise - Hudson, by James ParryNoted local writer and Hudson resident James Parry has agreed to write on “People” for Arts Hudson. He willfocus on arts-related activities featuring people with links to Hudson and their projects. Written in his inimita-ble style, this first column reports on an on-going movie project, introduces a new photography initiative andgives the details of a new book by a Hudson author.

Funny perhaps, but to be per-fectly frank - and I’m not talking abouttwo other fellow Hudsonites surnamedHicks and Royle - I’ve never been afan of legendary New York-bornsongstress, Barbara Streisand, ofFunny Girl fame. Who, according toBillboard, is the best-selling femalerecording artist in history with over 75million albums sold and still countingand who is still going strong at thetender age of 76. And who, I can stateunequivocably, has never visitedHudson or environs. Nor has anyintention of ever doing so as far as Iknow!

But in penning this, my firstPeople column to appear in ArtsHudson, one of her biggest hits strucka chord. Namely People, that she firstsang as a young 22 year-old in the1964 Broadway blockbuster musicaland later made into a movie of thesame name in which she hauntinglyand tearfully warbled:

‘People who need peopleAre the luckiest people in the world’

Well, substitute the word ‘know’for ‘need’ and you will get my drift.For while our little hamlet by theOttawa River and Lake of TwoMountains is blessed with beautifulhomes, gorgeous gardens, a volunteerinfrastructure thatsimply boggles the mind,and a thriving andevolving arts and cul-tural scene asshowcased on otherpages in this issue, it istruly people who makeour community such awonderful place for us inwhich to live and callhome. People who donot necessarily makepage one news in ourlocal, let alone nationalmedia. But who, throughtheir initiatives, creativ-ity, and achievements,are a vibrant part of ourlittle town, population atlast count still just over5,100. So as we headinto Fall after a glorious

summer - yeh, humidity, thunder-storms and all - let’s turn the spotlighton some local residents who exemplifyexactly what I’m talking about

A WHALE OF A TALESupremely talented filmmaker

Sebastian McKinnon, for example,who lives in Rigaud, of Montreal-based 5 Knights Productions andKIN’s Fables fame, and who has justreturned from his beloved Newfound-land after scouting out locations forhis next short film, The Whale, withshooting scheduled to begin in No-vember.

Written and directed by To-ronto- and Montreal-based actress,director, and music composer, OrianaLeman, and with Sebastian produc-ing, the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where all marinelife has gone extinct, and it followstwo journalists who seek out an oldmysterious whaler who knows thelocation of a beached whale skeleton,a sacred site.

Confession time. Am still await-ing the final confirmation call, but Iwas invited by this dynamic duo toaudition for the role of the whaler andam keeping my fingers and toescrossed. Spent a couple of weeks in

Newfoundland three years ago withSebastian and his late brother Ben,acting in Salvage, the second episodein this trilogy saga to date which also‘starred’ Hudsonites PeterWilliamson and Robert Kemerer.

What an honour and pleasure itwas to work with such talented anddedicated brothers and their team.And oh yes, my role was that of an oldmysterious fisherman but this timewith Viking tattoos and hefting aharpoon. Go figure and talk abouttypecasting!

All three first episodes of KINSFables, incidentally, have beenscreened at Hudson VillageTheatre on opening night of theHudson Film Festival. And, shouldpost-production of The Whale becompleted in time, Hudson FilmSociety president Clint Ward, as-sures me that it will be featuredduring Ben’s Night at next year’s festslated for February 27 through March3. Can’t wait to see it, let alone to beactually in it!

And now from film to still photogra-phy. More specifically to anotherdynamic duo, namely Hudsonites

Katinka RubinMichaud and her part-ner in life andprofessionally, Yannick, who first met in thedarkroom at DawsonCollege back in 1993and who, this past May,participated in Hudson’sfirst ever Photo Expo - the brainchild of AlJared - at the StephenF. Shaar CommunityCentre along withseveral other localaperture artists.

Explains Katinka,“For some while, we hadbeen thinking aboutworking on a personalphotographic project

involving black and white portraits.When Al invited us to participate,we knew right away that we wanted tophotograph some of the fascinatingpeople who live here with a view tosome day publishing a coffee tablebook with each sharing their ownindividual stories.”

Says Yannick, “Since we were inthe middle of construction work in ourhouse, we had only one possibleweekend for the portraits before theshow would be on. It turned into amarathon event. We set up aprofessional studio and invited 21local people comprising artists,musicians, writers, politicians, ahistorian, entrepreneurs andacademics to come and sit for us.Every half an hour, a new personwould be at our door. It wasan amazing experience to photographso many people and hear their storiesabout their connections to Hudson.Every portrait was a team effort. Andafterwards, we did the post-productionwork in Photoshop and then printedall the images on our home printer.”

Tell you folks, it was a fabulousexposition. And it isn’t over by a longshot. For again, this Fall, the camera

couple will be setting up their in-houseportrait studio and if you would like topropose someone who you feel fits thebill - or even yourself for that matter -they would love to hear from you andthere is absolutely no chargewhatsoever.

Says Katinka, “Faces ofHudson is an ongoing photographicjourney and our goal is to have 100portraits for the next photo show inHudson scheduled for April 27th and28th 2019 at the Community Centre.And you might even see the coffeetable book in time for the show.”

THE REBELSStill on books and with the

Quebec provincial election now in fullswing, I can’t wait to read the newestnovel - slated for release later thismonth - by the aforementioned FrankHicks. Irrascable antiquarian, formerHudson Irishman of the Year,author of five books to date includinghis most recent must-read, Murder In

A Small Town, and proud son of Eirewho immigrated to Canada fromDublin as a tot at the age of two.It’s title? The Rebels. Described by theauthor himself as “part love story, parthistorical novel, and part politicalintrigue exploring the making of arevolutionary that starts in NorthernIreland in a period that is oftenreferred to as The Troubles, andmoves on to Montreal during the FLQCrisis.”

Recapof the VillageTheatre Seasonby Bert MarkgrafHow interesting that the

qualities of masculine friendshipshould be tested while wrangling over,not the usual topics of sports,business, or fast cars, but over thechoice of a work of art??

Serge (Jimmie Blais) has justdropped a substantial amount ofmoney ($100,000) on the purchase ofa work of art. It is a large amount ofmoney for him, but you can tell by hisfacial expression and his voice tonethat he is absolutely enraptured by hisacquisition.

The artwork, by a well-knownartist, is 5’ by 4’ and completely white.His friend Marc (Marcel Jeannin) thinkshe has gone mad or been cheated,and is furious at him. A third friend,Ivan, cares more about their friend-ship than the quality of the artwork,and doesn’t want to take sides.

Three great actors and athoughtful and clever script keep thisplay in motion from start to finish.Serge, Marc and Ivan each possess adifferent temperament and physicalpresence.

Serge, open-faced, wide-eyedand almost childlike, contrasts withthe chiseled, cynical sometimesintimidating Marc. Ivan, friend in themiddle, just wants to make peace. Itis clear that a great deal is at stake foreach one of them in this dispute, morethan just the price of the artwork. Is itpride? masculinity? friendship? sanity?

Dean Patrick Fleming, nostranger to the Hudson Village Theatrestage (most recently Jonas and Barryin the Home) has crafted a fast-pacedproduction that is alternately serious,funny and honest. This play waswritten by Yasmina Reza, originally inFrench, and translated by ChristopherHampton.

The minimalist set by PeterVatsis, sparse and subtly lit, is domi-nated by the white painting, when itappears. Serge is always pulling itfrom behind a partition and doesn’tseem to have the courage to hang ituntil almost the end of the play.

He may well have reservationsabout his investment, and is not 100%

confident he has done the right thing.He is looking, as one might expect, forsupport and confirmation from hisfriends, but this is not forthcoming.

The action moves occasionallyto the residences of the other twocharacters each of whom had a differ-ent painting on their walls, that I wishI could have seen more clearly. Sinceart is the focus of this play, I thinktheir choice of paintings might havegiven me a greater insight into theircharacters.

I thought “ART” was an interest-ing choice of play, following andbalancing the previous “SavannahSipping Society,” a study of friendshipfrom both sides of the gender divide.

What should we expect from ourfriends? What issues threaten friend-ship, and how can we heal the riftsthat inevitably occur as we each try tobecome the individuals we are.Friendship may not be as dramatic orintense as romance, but it is a pre-cious aspect of life.

“So, how did the Hudson VillageTheatre season go?” we asked KalinaSkulka, the executive director. “Verywell,” is the short version of theanswer. The summer professionalseason met its targets, the brought-intribute band shows are very popularand the theatre is thriving.

In a tough cultural and eco-nomic environment, the theatre has astrong base of support in Hudson andthe surrounding area but is still seeinglots of visitors from Montreal and fromas far afield as Ottawa. The Leisa Wayshow, “Across the Pond” sold outshows (see Kathryn’s review on page16) and there seems to be a largeaudience for music.

The more theatrical shows alsodid well, with “Art” bringing in largeaudiences for a show that is nottraditional summer theatre. Kalinabelieves the great acting may havebeen a factor with the actors beingwell-known in Montreal and having abit of a following.

This fall, look for more comedyand music as well as the annual fundraiser at Whitlock on Saturday October20th - not to be missed.

The Savannah Sipping Societyby Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten

Another hot summer evening inHudson - par for the course thisseason - and the Hudson VillageTheatre is packed and filled withanticipation. Dozens of ladies and afew brave guys line up for The Savan-nah Sipping Society, a play written bya trio of writers, Jesse Jones, NicholasHope and Jamie Wooten, who havejointly scripted plays, televisionshows, off-Broadway productions,even movies (Wooten was a writer forthe iconic tv series “Golden Girls).These writers specialize in creatingstrong roles for women, and favorsettings with an unmistakeable south-ern flavour.

The Savannah Sipping Societytakes place on a gracious well-ap-pointed verandah, bathed in goldenlight. Three women, brought togetherby their mutual dislike for a recentclass in Hot Yoga, have agreed tomeet for drinks and a pot-luck dinner.Despite their obvious differences, theysense intuitively, that they might haveenough in common to enjoy this gettogether.

Randa Covington (JaneWheeler) is a mid-career architectwhose expected promotion was stolenby a younger male colleague. DotHaigler (Kathleen Fee), a recentwidow, had anticipated a happy life inretirement with her beloved husbanduntil his untimely death. AndMarlafaye Mosely (Lisa BronwynMoore) was robbed of her self-confi-dence (if not her fiery tongue!) by herjerk of an ex-husband.

Into this group walks JinxJenkins (Paula Costain), a youngwoman with the desire to build a life-coaching practice. She believes shecan help this disparate trio rebuildtheir self-respect and in the process,have some fun.

The dialogue throughout thisplay is fast-moving and clever. Thedirector (Ellen David) and her casthave created a seamless production.Each woman is different either in age,social status or personality yettogether they manage to support andencourage each other through advice,dinners and madcap adventures to

overcomewhatever isstanding in theirway.

There aregroup sceneswhich are hilari-ous, whetherdiscussing men,food or bourbon.These scenes areinterspersed bysolo momentswhere, on adarkened stage ina single spotlight,each character confides to us herintimate personal thoughts - thingsshe might not feel comfortable con-fessing to the group.

I think this play succeeds sowell, partly because it functions onmore than one level - the outer publicpersona and the private inner core. Ispoke to many people who saw thisplay during its run, and all had a greattime.

What, after all, holds us backfrom identifying and going after ourdreams? What happens when we findout someone else’s dream is not ourown? And where do we find thecourage to go after the life we want?According to this play, good friends, ifnot the only answer, are key. TheSavannah Sipping Society played atthe Hudson Village Theatre from July4-22, 2018.

Grief is a word we don’t utteroften, let alone claim. To highlight ourgrief about anything is not usually thetopic of dinner conversation. When weare grieving, some tend to isolate, andwalk about in clouds of confusion, andsometimes despair. It is a state ofbeing that is not welcoming, for wesuffer. Our hearts break. Our love islost. We have difficulty coping with lifeand meaning.  It can be one of thegreatest challenges in life to face.

We are all grief stricken at timesin our lives. There is the loss of lovedones, family or friends, including ourpets. There is also the loss of a job,occurrences as a result an accident, amajor change in life, illness, leavingour homeland; even dealing with ouridentity can cause us to grieve. Asunique as we are, though we all grievedifferently, it is often suggested thatwe do so with others that can support

our journey, understand us, and helpguide us through these challengingtimes.

There is also what I wouldname as ‘spiritual grief.’  The aban-doning of the authentic self, theperson we are called to be and tobecome, in exchange for the conven-iences of this world that are tempo-rarily more pleasurable.  At times weseek to people-please, arresting ourown personal development. Othertimes, we wrestle with restlessnessand anxiety, which also cause us agrief of sorts – as we dismiss thenatures of discipline, and the meritsof silence and solitude. This in turnmay lead us to melancholy, depres-sion or a deep sorrow or sadness,which we are not aware of, let aloneprepared to deal with. All couldconceivably be characteristic of agreater spiritual illness ~ acedia.

Acedia, the focus of my studies,has been defined in dozens of ways,hundreds of times over thousands ofyears. This malaise of the soul can befound in ancient literature, as far backas the psalms in the Old Testament,and maybe even referenced inGilgamesh. And yet, few know muchabout it, let alone know how to copewith this spiritual grief.  It is a curse ofthe mind, a destructive energy thatcan ultimately destroy the very fabricof life itself.  In the 16th century,acedia became defined as ‘the ab-sence of care.’  When we look at thework of Heidegger and his conceptsaround what it means ‘to be,’ we see acorrelation between ‘being and car-ing.’  If we don’t care, we do not ‘be.’In these dark places, we grieve. Oursoul grieves the slowly denigratingloss of self.  We are not serving the

We can’t always control whathappens in life, or get to choose theoutcome. However, we can choosehow we respond to the experiencesthat throw us off our course.  Thereare some ways that are more helpfulthan others to help us cope with loss.And I believe that the convergence of

“A Fantastic Woman” Opens New Film SeasonBy Clint Ward

When ever possible our localfilm society has always launched their8 film Monday at the Movies withthe Foreign Language Academy AwardOscar winner. From many reports Ihave received and a study of thereviews, A Fantastic Woman is afilm not to be missed. Buy it, steal it,download it but better still join theaudience at the Hudson Village Thea-tre on September 17 either at 2.00pm or 7.30 pm to enjoy the maximumcinema experience.

Out of 190 critic reviews as-sessed by the aggregate RottenTomatoes film site, 178 gave the filma resounding thumbs up and only 12were negative. Here are some com-ments from those critics:

Following the HFS opening day,the October film choice is a bit morechallenging. Chloé Zhao is a Chinesefilm director, screenwriter, and pro-ducer. She was born and raised in Beijing and growing up, she wasdrawn to influences from Western popculture.

She attended a boarding schoolin London before moving to LosAngeles to finish high school. Zhaostudied at Mount Holyoke Collegeearning a bachelor’s degree in politicalscience and then studied film produc-tion at the New York University TischSchool of the Arts.

Her debut feature film, SongsMy Brothers Taught Me (2015),premiered at Sundance Film Festival.Her second feature film, The Rider(2017), was critically acclaimed.

That second film, The Rider, isthe October 15 attraction. Zhao’simpetus for making the film camewhen Brady Jandreau – a cowboywhom she met and befriended on theIndian Reservation where she shot herfirst film – suffered a severe headinjury when he was thrown off hishorse during a rodeo competition. Thefilm premiered at Cannes Film Festivalas part of the Directors’ Fortnightselection and won the Art CinemaAward.

The film earned her nominationsfor Best Feature and Best Director atthe 33rd Independent Spirit Awards.At the same ceremony, Zhao becamethe inaugural winner of the BonnieAward, named after Bonnie Tiburzi,which recognizes a mid-career femaledirector. When the film was released,Peter Keough of The Boston Globewrote: “It achieves what cinema iscapable of at its best: It reproduces aworld with such acuteness, fidelity,and empathy that it transcends themundane and touches on the univer-sal.”

The Rider’s hard-hitting dramais only made more effective throughthe use of untrained actors to tell themovie’s fact-based tale. Here is whatMoira Macdonald the Seattle Timesarts critic wrote:

“Casting a dramatic film withnonactors is always a riskyproposition; the fresh, naturalpresence of “real people” is sometimesoutweighed by awkwardness whenthey have to deliver scripted dialogue.But Chloé Zhao’s dreamlike WesternThe Rider is one of those happyexceptions. Its main character is arodeo cowboy named BradyBlackburn, played by a rodeo cowboynamed Brady Jandreau, who lives onthe Pine Ridge Indian Reservation inSouth Dakota with his father andsister (both of whom play versions ofthemselves in the film). The November 19 film will bringa little light heartedness to the VillageTheatre screen. The Toronto Interna-tional Film Festival programmer thatoccasionally offers us a film opinionhad this to say about, Hearts BeatLoud -  “this is super charming, veryuplifting, and all in all a feel goodfilm.”

Frank (Nick Offerman), owns arecord shop in Brooklyn, where hispassion for music is still felt throughthe torn posters on the wall andmakeshift record crates. A widower,Frank has raised his daughter, Sam(Kiersey Clemons) alone for the last11 years, and he’s having troublecoming to terms with her imminentdeparture for university.

While Sam is taking summerschool in preparation, Frank convincesher to take a study break for a jamsession, where they create their firstoriginal song, Hearts Beat Loud.Realizing the song’s potential, Frankuploads it to the internet. When hehears their song playing in a coffeeshop, he wants to pursue the bandand Sam’s talents as a musician andsongwriter.

While Sam discourages him, shestruggles with leaving in her ownways: her discovery of her passion formusic and her relationship with hergirlfriend Rose (Sasha Lane) createemotional turmoil that serve as fodderfor her songwriting talents.

A sequence inwhich he’s training a wild horse showshim seeming to become one with theanimal — the camera, frighteninglyclose in the claustrophobic pen,captures Brady talking the horsedown, gazing at it, teaching it to focuson his hand and voice — and remindsus that no actor could have shot ascene quite like this.

Zhao captures the quiet moodof the endless prairie that is Brady’shome — grasses whisper in the wind,faces flicker in the light of a campfire,the moon gleams like a pearl nestledin the velvet sky. Much of this filmseems to take place during thatmagical hour between sunset andtwilight, and Zhao, withcinematographer Joshua JamesRichards, finds painterly beauty inthose blue-shot fields and featheryclouds. Hudson Chamber Music Series 2018, the 36th Seasonby Steve Ambler

The first two concerts of the 36th

season of the Hudson Chamber MusicSeries take place this fall. SopranoJoan Fearnley will present a veryspecial recital on October 14, with aprogramme inspired by Lili Boulanger’sgazette of letters from the trenches ofthe Great War by various composers(accompanied by Frédéric Lacroix onpiano and with readings by MarianneDostaler). The Dolin Trio will perform aconcert of East European romanticworks (Janacek, Smetana, Suk andTchaikovsky) on November 18.

Joan Fearnley is a regularsoloist and conductor at Notre DameCathedral (Ottawa) where she leadsthe Women’s Choir and the Children’sChoir. She also conducts the BytownVoices community choir. Audienceshave beenimpressed by thebeauty of hertone, superbmusicianship andcommunicativestage presence. Aselection of

Pianist Frédéric Lacroix hasperformed widely as a soloist andchamber musician including radioappearances on the CBC, RadioCanada, and NPR.

Marianne Dostaler has a B.A. invocal performance from the Universityof Ottawa. She is currently the choralscholar with the Women’s Choir ofNotre Dame Cathedral.

Lili (along with her sister Nadia)Boulanger published the Gazette desclasses du Conservatoire Nationalfrom 1915 until her tragic death at theage 24 just before the end of theGreat War. The Gazette publishedletters from composers who were atthe front or whose lives were affectedby the war, providing an invaluablehistorical record of the impact of thewar on French musical life.

The programme includes songsby Boulanger herself as well as byCamille Saint-Saëns, Gabriel Fauré,Érik Satie and Maurice Ravel.Marianne Dostaler will play the role ofLili Boulanger and read a selection ofthe letters. The recital is particularlyappropriate as we come up on the100th anniversary of the end of theGreat War on November 11.

The concert on November 18features the Dolin Chamber Trio. This

is a return engagement byElizabeth Dolin (cello), thistime with a trio formedunder her leadership. Theother members areBernadene Blaha (piano)and Laurence Kayaleh(violin).

Since her Carnegie RecitalHall debut in 1985,Elizabeth Dolin has beenrecognized as one ofCanada’s finest cellists.She has played as a

recitalist and chamber musicianthroughout Canada and the UnitedStates and performed as a soloistunder such conductors as MarioBernardi, Yannick Nezet-Séguin andSimon Streatfield.

Bernadene Blaha firstcame to international attention as aprizewinner of major internationalcompetitions such as the MontrealSymphony Orchestra Competition andthe 11th Annual Inter-national PianoCompetition in New York City. She isAssociate Professor at the ThorntonSchool of Music, University ofSouthern California.

Laurence Kayaleh has per-formed as guest soloist with manydistinguished orchestras: the ZurichTonhalle, the Russian NationalOrchestra, the National Symphony

(WashingtonDC), and theMontrealSymphonyOrchestra. Shehas recordedthe completeworks for violinand piano by

The first half of the programmeconsists of works by Czech composers.Josef Suk wrote his Elegy for pianotrio opus 23 in 1902 as a memorial tothe life of Julius Zeyer, whose novelsand poems were steeped in thelegends of Bohemia. The Fairy Tale,composed in 1910 for cello and pianoby Leos Janacek, tells the story of aRussian prince who endures a series oftests handed down by the ruler of theunderworld. Bedrich Smetana’s Ausder Heimat (From my Homeland) is aset of two duets for violin andpiano composed in 1879 — five yearsafter his most famous orchestral work,Ma Vlast, and equally inspired bypatriotic Czech folk music. Peter IlyichTchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A Minoropus 50, one of the great staples ofthe piano trio repertoire, takes up thesecond half of the programme.Tchaikovsky composed the trio inRome in 1882.

and has been recorded by all of thegreat piano trio ensembles. It exerteda strong influence on succeedinggenerations of Russian composers likeRachmaninov and Shostakovich.

The Hall is an idealsetting for chamber music with anunparalleled view of the Lake of TwoMountains and acoustics that haveattracted the attention of CBC Radio,which has recorded several of theconcerts. Across the Pond, The BritishInvasion Then and Now, was theopening act for this year’s summer

season at the Hudson Village Theatre.It was a tribute to the river of Britishpop music that flooded our radiowaves starting in the early sixties.Leisa Way and her backup band of five

musicians and singers,known as the “LonelyHearts Club Band” broughtus an energetic concert ofwell-known favorites - sowell-known that mostspectators in the audiencecould sing along word forword (including back-upvocals!).

Cool matching suits onthe guys and a lead singerin glittering, ever changingcostumes and hairdos tookus from the early days ofthe invasion (Wild Thing,Do-Wa- Diddy) through theBeatles and their discoveryby Ed Sullivan (“Americaneeded cheering up”), and

on through the 60’s (Gerry and thePacemakers, The Dave Clark Five,Mary Hopkins, the Animals ).

After that came the phenom-enon of Mick Jagger and the RollingStones. The music went on to em-brace the more political issues of civilrights (To Sir with Love), psychedelicdrug use (Sargent Pepper, ProcolHarem, Donovan), and the nascentfeminist movement (Dusty Springfield,Petula Clark, Annie Lennox).

It was an evening of energetic,over-the-top performances. Themusicians had great chemistry, thecostumes were grand, and the choiceof musical numbers presented a verycoherent story of a decade in whichmany basic truths were challenged.Great entertainment, certainly, butalso some food for thought.
