John Dunphy: Phone: 059 / 9141833 / 9182882 Priest on Call for Carlow area (Emergency Only) - 087/2588118 ASH WEDNESDAY:- This Wednesday 6 th March. Discipleship is about giving to the poor, prayer and fasting … and Lent (meaning Spring) is the time we are given to examine how well we have embraced that discipleship. The ashes on our foreheads remind us that time is short and we learn again to face this grim reality with truthfulness and courage. Blessing and distribution of ashes during Mass @ 8am and 10am in St Clare’s and 7pm in Holy Cross. Laying Down Stones:- God looked down from Heaven and rolled the Stone away! All of us carry burdens that cause us to walk through life with some experience of pain. We all have different times in our lives when these burdens can weigh heavy on our minds, our hearts and our souls. These burdens may come from any area of our lives; family, work, health or finances. Sometimes the weight of these burdens is too much for us to bear alone. God doesn’t want us to carry our burdens alone. He asks us to lay our burdens down at the foot of the cross. He wants us to surrender our heavy load to him. During this season of Lent we invite you to lay down your stone, your burden, on the strength of the Lord. Please take a stone from the sacred space in the palm of your hand and lay upon it the burdens of your life. Place the stone on the pathway to the cross. In this way we are laying down our weights to be carried by Jesus and rolled away like the stone which revealed the empty tomb. Our Novena takes place during the Easter Season. We also invite you to write your burden, that the stone represents, on a piece of paper and place it in the petition boxes. We will then, through the prayers of our Faith Community and the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, ask Our Lord to relieve our burdens as he himself overcame his cross. It is the forty-day period of preparation for the Church’s celebration of Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends before Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday (this year, April 18). There is a double focus in Lent baptism and penance. It is the final stage of preparation for adults who will be baptised at the Easter Vigil. For those of us already baptised it is a time to recall our baptism and prepare to renew it at Easter. Lent calls us to a time of self-reflection, penance, and turning back to God as we ready ourselves to renew our baptism. It is a time to reflect on God’s word to us in our lives today, to pray, fast and reach out to others in charitable action. We can look at Lent as a communal journey of the Christian community back to God...our annual retreat culminating in the joy of Easter. Laying Down Stones:- God looked down from Heaven and rolled the Stone away!

All of us carry burdens that cause us to walk through life with some experience of

pain. We all have different times in our lives when these burdens can weigh heavy

on our minds, our hearts and our souls.

These burdens may come from any area of our lives; family, work, health or

finances. Sometimes the weight of these burdens is too much for us to bear alone.

God doesn’t want us to carry our burdens alone. He asks us to lay our burdens down

at the foot of the cross. He wants us to surrender our heavy load to him.

During this season of Lent we invite you to lay down your stone, your burden, on

the strength of the Lord. Please take a stone from the sacred space in the palm of

your hand and lay upon it the burdens of your life. Place the stone on the

pathway to the cross. In this way we are laying down our weights to be carried by

your burden, that the stone represents, on a piece of paper and place it in the

petition boxes. We will then, through the prayers of our Faith Community and
