Cause of Leakage Currents (DC)
DC Leakage currents are related
to the isolation resistance of the
PV modules and the DC potential
voltage w.r.t. Earth
Under normal operation, these
currents equalize themselves
within the PV array.
Due to ageing and weather
influences, the balance may be
disturbed. This unbalance can
be measured at start-up of the
inverter.

Cause of Leakage Currents (AC)
AC Leakage Currents are
generally caused by the parasitic
capacitance of the PV modules
and the residual AC ripple on the
DC Cables
In common TN systems, these
currents flow from the modules
to the inverter, the power
transformer star grounding point
and then back to the modules
via Earth

How to Control Leakage Currents?
Advanced PWM Controls can
reduce the AC ripple voltage on the
DC lines, effectively reducing AC
leakage currents, but this comes at
a price.
• lower efficiency
• more sensitive to disturbances in
the grid (e.g. voltage unbalance)
