40% to hit pubon Paddy’s Dayover cash fearMORE than four out of 10 people will be cele-brating the first bank holiday of 2009 by drown-ing the shamrock.A new survey of Metro’s Urban Life panel has
revealed that 43 per cent of Dubliners will behitting the pubs with their family or friends totoast St Patrick tomorrow, with only one in fiveUrbanites claiming they will venture into thecity centre to watch the parade. The poll, which questioned 1,250 people,
found that 10 per cent of respondents wouldrather view the festival from the comfort of theirliving rooms while an additional 10 per centstated they don’t celebrate the national holiday. With many people currently feeling the pinch,
few will go abroad for this year’s festivities; justfour per cent said they were travelling overseasfor tomorrow. And money – or the lack of it –will impact on everything Urbanites do this yearcompared with 2008, they claim.Almost six out of 10 respondents admitted
they will shop around for better deals in prod-ucts and services, while 59 per cent also saidthey will enter more competitions to try and winprizes. Forty-eight per cent will bring a packed
lunch to work while more than half will cookmeals at home, they said.More than one-third of those surveyed main-
tained they would walk where possible instead oftaking transport, 44 per cent will save cash byusing discount vouchers and 48 per cent insistthey will use the internet to research their poten-tial purchases.Nearly half will avoid eating out in restaurants
this year to curb their spending, one-fifth of re-spondents claim they will go to fewer music gigs, while 32 per cent will be steering clear of night-clubs.However, people won’t be giving up all their
treats in 2009, regardless of the economic situa-tion. Almost 60 per cent will continue to enjoychocolate and ice cream, and 46 per cent refuseto cut back on holidaying either in Ireland orabroad.
