Host Actions
• ITNs, IAPPs and IRSES are Host Actions • This means:
• Host institution applies for a number of fellows/researchers
• Host’s proposal is evaluated• Selected host/network advertises fellowship
position and selects fellows/researchers• Contract duration with host, usually 4 years• Fellows’ stay depending on Action (up to 3
years)

ITN
• An ITN has both industrial and academic partners. Industry must be in involved at one of three levels:• As a full partner• Provider of specific training or secondment
opportunities• On the Advisory Board
• An ITN must have• Coherent quality standards and mutual recognition of
training/ diplomas
The size of an ITN
• The size of the network should reflect your needs and the aim of the project, but• Indicative number of partners (Guide for Applicants):
6 – 10
• FP6 indicative number of researcher months:EST: 72 – 999 (average 300) (last call)
• 80/20 EST / ER split

IAP
P
• It is a two-way partnership with at least one commercial enterprise and one academic organisation in two different Member or Associated Countries
• An IAPP aims to increase industry-academia co-operation by: • Supporting the creation, development, reinforcement
and execution of strategic partnerships• Creating diverse career possibilities and experience for
researchers• Knowledge sharing/cultural exchange, especially SMEs• Aiming for longer term co-operation between both
sectors
What can you do with an IAPP?F

IAP
P
• Recruit experienced researchers for between 2 months and 2 years
• Staff exchange – early stage or experienced researchers (and possibly technical staff and research managers!) for between 2 months and 2 years
• Organise common workshops/conferences• Inter-sectoral mobility possible, within framework
of whole project, in same country up to a maximum of 30% of total researcher months
• For SMEs, a contribution towards small equipment costs (up to 10% of project total)
IAPP first call update
• 103 proposals submitted• 1 proposal ineligible• 41 proposals go on ranked list• 5 proposal on reserve list
• Full list of projects available on UKRO website• Commission has published further info on some of

Examples of funded IAPPs
Life Sciences: FIGHTMAL - Correlating protection against malaria with serum profiles against Plasmodium falciparum antigen repertoiresPeople living in endemic malaria areas develop, with time, a form of immunity infection and clinical disease. Currently there are no assays or clinical parameters that predict whether an exposed person is protected against malaria. This represents a major obstacle for vaccine development. Here research institutions and industrial partners, combining cutting edge expertise join their efforts with the aim unravel correlates of protection against human malaria. Estimated EU contribution: € 1.95 millionCo-ordinator: Prof. Andrea Crisanti, University of Perugia, Italy, Partners from: UK (Microtest Matrices Ltd and London School of Hygiene andTropical Medicine), France (Protein'eXpert), Uganda (Med Biotech Laboratories)

Examples of funded IAPPsEconomics: CEI-EGE China's Electricity Industry: Efficiency, And The EnvironmentThe electricity industry in China has to meet three challenges: to supply growing economy with sufficient power, to make power plants more efficient, reduce the health-damaging impact of its coal-fired power plants. Understanding extent and the nature of these challenges is of major concern for decision- both in the public and private sectors in China and Europe. The proposed will aim at providing policy makers and industrialists with a comprehensive detailed economic and technical assessment of the capability of China's industry to meet environmental demand for its sustainable development Estimated EU contribution: € 0.67 millionCo-ordinator: Prof. Eric Girardin, Université de la Méditerranée, France, Partners from: UK (Brunel University); Switzerland (SwissElectricity)F
