A new survey of Metro’s Urban Life panel has revealed that 43 per cent of Dubliners will be hitting the pubs with their family or friends to toast St Patrick tomorrow, with only one in five Urbanites claiming they will venture into the city centre to watch the parade. The poll, which questioned 1,250 people, found that 10 per cent of respondents would rather view the festival from the comfort of their living rooms while an additional 10 per cent stated they don’t celebrate the national holiday. With many people currently feeling the pinch, few will go abroad for this year’s festivities; just four per cent said they were travelling overseas for tomorrow. And money – or the lack of it – will impact on everything Urbanites do this year compared with 2008, they claim. Almost six out of 10 respondents admitted they will shop around for better deals in prod- ucts and services, while 59 per cent also said they will enter more competitions to try and win prizes. Forty-eight per cent will bring a packed lunch to work while more than half will cook meals at home, they said. More than one-third of those surveyed main- tained they would walk where possible instead of taking transport, 44 per cent will save cash by using discount vouchers and 48 per cent insist they will use the internet to research their poten- tial purchases. Nearly half will avoid eating out in restaurants this year to curb their spending, one-fifth of re- spondents claim they will go to fewer music gigs, while 32 per cent will be steering clear of night- clubs. However, people won’t be giving up all their treats in 2009, regardless of the economic situa- tion. Almost 60 per cent will continue to enjoy chocolate and ice cream, and 46 per cent refuse to cut back on holidaying either in Ireland or abroad. Relying on strategically placed ‘shamrocks’ to protect their modesty, the stunt was carried out to launch Aer Lingus’s new £9.99 ‘no hidden extras’ fare from Gatwick Airport. Organisers had hoped to attract 999 volunteers, but the Metropolitan Police – who were ‘in attendance to ensure that the law was not broken’ – said there were only about 200-300. The volunteers, who received two free return flights for taking part, marched along the South Bank until they reached the Jubilee Gardens at the foot of the London Eye. Aer Lingus’s Enda Corneille said: ‘Once out of sight of the cautious police, many of the participants ignored police warnings and stripped off for the bewildered, but eager, onlooking crowds’. HOLLYWOOD heart-throb George Clooney has lost out to Hugh Laurie in a poll of favourite TV docs. Clooney’s character Dr Doug Ross came out fourth in a top 10 of the most fancied on-screen medics, despite delighting fans with a welcome return to hospital drama ER. First place went to Matthew Fox’s character Dr Jack Shepherd in the hit series Lost, followed by Dr Sam Strachan of Holby City. Grumpy Dr Gregory House came in third place. Her publicist Max Clifford said she told Bobby, five, and Freddy, four: ‘Mummy’s going to heaven soon.’ Goody has also made plans for her funeral which she wants to be a ‘celebration’ of her life, ‘because it’s her final farewell to everybody’. ‘We’re on the edge of a precipice... but she’s with the people she wanted to be with in her final hours,’ he said.
