4 JCC Bulletin

On Thanksgiving we will celebrate and give thanks for a bountiful har-vest. We gather with family and friends and sit down to a sumptuousmeal which replicates some of the foods the Pilgrims ate when theycame to this land of plenty. They came seeking a better life but theyneeded the help of others to survive. Together with the Native Amer-icans, they sowed and reaped the bounty of the land. Quests for a better life continue today. Unfortunately, in the current

economy, there are those of us who struggle to make a better life a re-ality. Some come to the JCC seeking help, and our fundraising effortshave provided Nursery School and Camp scholarships totaling$300,000 this year. We couldn’t do this without the generosity of ourmany donors.

Tribute CardsOne way you can do your part in helping is by participating in the Trib-ute Card program. Let someone special know you care, and make a dif-ference in the Staten Island community with a JCC Tribute Card. When you send one of our beautiful tribute cards you will be acknowl-

edging a special occasion in honor of a birth, wedding, anniversary, getwell, or in memory of a loved one. For a minimum gift of $18, the cardis personalized and mailed with the name of the recipient and thedonor. In addition, the name and occasion will appear in the next JCCBulletin.

Tribute cards are the perfect way to honor a loved one andstrengthen the community at the same time. For more informationcontact Chana Cilento 718.475.5243 or [email protected].

FilmFilmed by YitzhakNovember 4 is the anniversary of theday that Yitzak Rabin was assassi-nated 15 years ago. After his death, anold box is opened. Dust spreads allover. Inside there are dozens of smallyellow boxes. They have all beenmarked 'Yitzhak' by hand. These are8 mm films, each is three minutes. To-gether they comprise almost 10 hours of old footage: films from a dif-ferent and somehow forgotten world of the sixties: the faces, theflowers, the Kodak colors, the empty landscapes of the recently bornIsrael. Some would say these were "the years of innocence".Stolzenberg Social Hall, Bernikow JCC FREEThursday, November 4, 7:30pm

Dear Fit Pro’s:Question: I feel like the only part of clean eating I’m following is whenI load the dishwasher! Please help me figure out how to eat better.

Signed, Mr. Clean on SI

Dear Mr. Clean,The thought is that if you’re not eating grilled fish and steamed vegeta-bles, whole grains, 100% organic foods and so on, every single meal thenyou can’t be successful. But the fact of the matter is every single posi-tive step taken is a “win” and will get you closer to your goals than doingnothing will. That being said, here are a few simple eating strategies:• Drink fewer calories. • Add more veggies to your diet every single day. • Cook 1 more meal per week than you do now. Just one. You have morecontrol than when you eat out, so the more you can eat at home- thebetter.• Replace a snack each day with raw nuts like pistachios, almonds or wal-nuts. Replace is the key, not add. Nuts may help with weight loss andare clearly better than most of the packaged calorie, sugar and saltbombs in “pretty” packaging. • When you are out to eat, choose something smaller. Split an entréewith someone or order an appetizer instead of a meal.Pick just one new strategy and start this week. Continue with that same

positive eating strategy next week and add one more. Over time, all newpositive habits will replace less healthy ones and you’ll be on your wayto permanent success!

Carol's CornerWhat is the most important piece of equipment needed for group fitnessclasses? Sneakers and the proper sneaker for your safest and best per-formance.Sneakers are important especially during higher energy classes such

as aerobics, step aerobics and kick boxing. During these higher intenseworkouts you are transferring three times your body weight down toyour feet. Wearing improper footwear over a period of time can causestress fractures and tears. Purchasing a studio or an aerobic sneakerwill offer more support and stability to help keep your hips, ankles andfeet safer from injury during those types of workouts. I wear a studiosneaker and may I also suggest if you participate in aerobic activity fre-quently, you should purchase new sneakers about every three months.

Fitness Updates: The Fitness Center is open on Thanksgiving 8:30am-12:30pm.Carol would like to thank all those members and instructors who par-ticipated with her in the Senior Olympics Closing Ceremony on October3 at the Bernikow. Also, congratulations to all those who took part inthose special events.

Member Spotlight: Sidney (age 80) & Beverly Bord (age 71) They are not only the happiest couple weknow….but their healthy lifestyles are emu-lated by their four grandchildren too. Theyjoined the JCC over 23 years ago when asthey retired with the belief that exercisingwould be beneficial to mind and body. Theygo to the Avis each Monday, Tuesday andThursday for aerobics, weight lifting, resist-ance bands and socializing. They continueto renew each year because the Avis has been an important and vitalpart of their lives. For 7 years they presided over the Yiddish Groupand were presented with Menorah Awards. They also participate in theannual Senior Olympics. Clearly, they look so good together not onlybecause of their dedication to exercise but to a healthy diet low in fatand high in fiber like tofu, hummus, grains, fruits and veggies.

TeensJewish Lens - An exciting new Teen project that explores Jewish values andcommunity through photographyThe JCC is partnering with the Jewish Lens to offer our teens an exciting

Using the captivating medium of photogra-phy as an entry-point, teens will have the opportunity to explore their identity, strengthen their connection to the community, and make stronger their link toworld Jewry. Initially, participants will study and interpret photographs byrenowned Israeli photographer Zion Ozeri. Afterwards, they will photographour community from the perspective of communal values, history and tradi-tions. Smoke Free Parks Press Conference

A press conference was held on the steps of City Hall in regardsto the new legislation being proposed by Mayor Bloomberg callingfor Smoke Free parks, beaches and pedestrian plazas. As a spon-sor of the proposed bill, the Jewish Community Center of StatenIsland sent the Colleges for Change and Reality Check programswhich focus on reducing tobacco use and promotion around theStaten Island community. The press conference was held to showthe support of this legislation from throughout the city with rep-resentation from all five boroughs. In addition, representativesfrom the American Cancer Society, American Heart Associationand American Lung Association were in attendance. Following thispress conference there was a hearing at the New York City Councilrepresenting both sides of the issue which was over capacity, showing the intensity of debate over this topic.

The American Cancer Society is marking the 35thGreat American Smokeout on Thursday,November 18 by encouraging smokers to use thedate to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advanceand quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokerswill be taking an important step towards a health-ier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done.Reality Check and Colleges 4 Change are to-

bacco prevention programs at the JCC and canprovide you with information to know what you'reup against, what your options are, and where to go for help.

International Coastal CleanupThe GED (General Education

Development) department teamedup with our Colleges 4 Change andReality Check programs to volun-teer for the annual InternationalCoastal Cleanup. The three teamed

up and took a trip to the Great Kills beach, where there were sodacans, wrappers and the most dangerous subsection of litter: ciga-rette butts. This cleanup was designed to show the teens and collegestudents what litter is doing to the environment and their commu-nity. The groups plan on many more such activities in the future.
