The Library andArchives Canada Preservationbuilding in Gatineau, Quebec, is reputed to bethe cleanest, most dust free building in theworld. It has also been home for many years tomost of the original art from the CaptainCanuck comic book series I published 30 or soyears ago.

A precedent was set, fortunately, when JimBurant, manager of LAC art and photo archivesand LAC art archivist Jennifer Devine allowedme to spend three days in a nearby highsecurity building in February of2009 with all the original art.Standing there over myBrother MFC6490CWscanning all thosepages was a tripdown memory lane, one that took meback to an earliertime.

Captain Canuckwas born in1974. Ron Leishman,George Freeman andClaude St. Aubin are theother key players in CaptainCanuck’s origin, and all are still dearfriends. It was Ron (www.toonaday.com) whoproposed the idea that we create thequintessential Canadian superhero, and he alsodesigned the original costume.Ron then left meto make something of it while he traveled toparts far and wide.

When it came to creating comic books I wasreinventing the wheel, experimenting. In the1970s, photo masks were the standardprocedure for producing colour comic books. With the help of Dick Thomas I came up witha technique that allowed for a wider colourrange, colour blending and gradient tones; quiterevolutionary at the time.

George Freeman, who was a Godsend, eventually did most of the penciling and inkingon Captain Canuck. Claude St. Aubin, ourresident French Canadian, and also divinelydelivered, did much of the colouring, someinking and pencil art. I had George be myeditor while I focused on the writing. Weenjoyed working together as a team. When itcame time to do the colouring we all chippedin. Because George had (and still has) the besteye for colour combinations we looked to him

for direction.

This spring George and Ispent many hours at ourcomputers compositingall the pages of lineart and color acetateoverlays I scannedat LAC in Gatineau, and doing clean upin preparation forthis printing. Myson Jordan, whoworks as a graphicdesigner, gave me

plenty of guidance. Sonow, for the first time,

Captain Canuck will look the wayit always should have. Even 30 years

later, while looking at the original artwork withthose vibrantly coloured overlays, I’m still inawe of George and Claude’s work.

I hope you enjoy this collection. Issues 1,2 and 3will come out in its own book soon andVolumeTwo, collecting issues 11–14, and the SummerSpecial, will be released by IDW this December. Please check in at captaincanuck.com for currentinformation on the release of the Captain CanuckLegacy series.
