From your street to the shops is asking you to take a big picture perspective and think about neighbourhood character and activity centres in Hobsons Bay.
One of the catalysts for undertaking this work is the introduction of the New Residential Zones. A review of the Neighbourhood Character Study and Activity Centre Strategy are important in providing direction on the appropriate location of these new zones.
To help us listen to you, were launching a new, easy way for you to participate online called Participate Hobsons Bay. To access it, simply type in participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au to your web browser, watch the videos, browse the info and get involved. You can also join the conversation by coming down to one of our seven drop-in sessions. Information is on Councils website. Notice of amendmentThe Minister for Planning has approved Amendment C101 to the Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme.
The Amendment came into operation on Thursday 17 July 2014, when a notice was published in the Government Gazette. The amendment includes 179 Melbourne Road, Williamstown as a contributory building under Heritage Overlay 27 (HO27) within the Hobsons Bay Heritage Study Amended 2010. The amendment also replaced the Hobsons Bay Heritage Study 2010 with an updated Hobsons Bay Heritage Study Amended 2014 within the Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme. A copy of the Amendment can be inspected, free of charge, at the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure website at www.dpcd.vic.gov.au/planning/planningschemes/changingtheplanningscheme/amendmentsonline

Whats happening at the libraries?Illustration competition Time has come again for the annual Friends of Altona Libraries Illustration Competition open to students in Prep to Year 12. If every picture tells a story, what story will your illustration tell? Theres $900 worth of cash prizes and books to be won by using any medium to create a piece of artwork inspired by your favourite book. Illustrators use pen, paper, crayon, chalk, collage, photography, paint, graphic design and a little tender loving care to tell the authors story. Its Italian: author talk Hilda and Laurie Inglese are passionate about using simple ingredients and the cooking traditions of their ancestors. They will be demonstrating traditional and modern pasta making methods at Altona Library. Wow! Its Italian, with its originally sourced recipes, is a celebration of their familys migration to the Yarra Valley from the Abruzzi Region in a remote village high in the mountains, east of Rome. An upgraded Maribyrnong River bike path, improvements to the bike route from Footscray to Highpoint and better connections for cyclists under the West Gate Freeway are among the major recommendations in the citys new bicycle strategy.
The draft, five-year strategy, endorsed by Maribyrnong council on August 12, also includes a plan to develop continuous north-south routes through Footscray, bicycle lanes on Williamstown Road between Somerville Road and Geelong Street in Kingsville, new bridges across the Maribyrnong River, and a two-way off-road path on the south side of Buckley Street in Footscray to West Footscray railway station.
The draft strategy presented to the council in May, noted key sections of the bike network were missing or needed upgrading and found cyclist numbers would improve with more suitable infrastructure.
Issues of safety and safe paths are the most common reasons cited for not riding, it stated.
VicRoads plans to deliver three new bike projects in the western suburbs by July next year, including traffic signals at the intersection of Whitehall and Parker streets, Footscray.
The $5.3 million Federation Trail extension, over the Newport-Albion freight line, will link to Fogarty Avenue in Yarraville by the end of this year.

For Damian Rann and his family, the fight against Parkinsons disease is A Walk in the Park.
On August 31, the Yarraville resident and his relatives will join thousands of Victorians taking part in a Parkinsons Victoria fund-raiser in support of Damians father Kelvin, who was diagnosed with the disease seven years ago.
Parkinsons disease is a progressively degenerative neurological disorder that affects the control of body movement.
Symptoms develop slowly and gradually progress over years, but are greatly helped by medication.
More than 27,000 Victorians and about 80,000 Australians are living with Parkinsons, for which there is no cure.
Mr Rann said A Walk in the Park had become a family tradition.
My brother and his son come down from Queensland, my girlfriend comes along with our dogs and, together, with a few friends, we compete as a team, he said.
Parkinsons isnt a death sentence, but it does affect a persons quality of life.
Exercise and keeping moving is important for people with Parkinsons, especially those in the early stages of the disease, so Dads taken part in the walk for the past four years.
Dad was in the shoe business for many years, owning stores around the western suburbs, so its ironic that its now so important for him to keep putting his best foot forward and to keep moving.
We take so many things for granted and you dont fully appreciate them until theyre gone, but Dad has always been very positive.
Now in its sixth year, A Walk in the Park
Feet first for Parkinsons
aims to raise awareness and funds for services and research to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinsons.
Those who take part can complete a two or four-kilometre walk along the Yarra River,
starting from Federation Square at 11am. Entry costs $40 for adults, $35 for concession and $15 for children aged 5-15.

Komninos Zervos understands the power of words. After the breakdown of his marriage 30 years ago, he started a diary to collect his thoughts.
Zervos was running a coffee lounge when a group of poets approached him and asked if they could do readings for his customers.
It didnt take long before he realised the poetry being performed on stage was similar to his own diary entries so, in his words, he decided to give it a crack.
Inspired by the likes of 1960s American beat poets Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, his spoken word performances will be centre stage as part of Poetic Licence at Footscray Community Arts Centre from August 27-29.
The Melbourne Writers Festival event will include a mash-up of poetry styles, from spoken
word to hip-hop, and performers as young as Dante Sofra, 13.
Zervos says his spoken-word poetry is about his reflections on life and the world around him.
Its about living in todays society; theres no fiction or fantasy, its real life, he says.
Other performers will include alternative jazz singer-poet Ileini Kabalan, virtuosic rapper and beat boxer Kevin Y2K Nugara, and poet Koraly Dimitriadis.
Poetic Licence is at the Footscray Community Arts Centre, 45 Moreland Street, Footscray.
