No matter how many times we look at a score-

board, fans will look up time and time again at the score, wonder-

ing if the score will ever change throughout the game. It’s amazing too. In the critical moments,

fans will look to the scoreboard to see how much time is left before the game ends, hoping for some sort of miracle to happen. Others will look to the scoreboard

and cheer on their teams when one scores. While

others will look to the scoreboard and feel the

pain and grief even when the score reads 85-0. No matter how many times a fan in the stands will

glance at the scoreboard, this piece of machinery will always tell the truth.

It never lies. It will al-ways display the score, time left in the game,

and timeouts left. Some scoreboards will even

display video replays of the action, commercials, and honors. High School teams playing football, baseball, softball, and

basketball will always get fans involved with emo-tions that create those

special moments. Bottom line, scoreboards

are about time. Probably, one of the

most memorable foot-ball moments had to

have been in 2011 when Harlingen played Abilene

at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. The

Cards won in double-overtime and fans were glued to the action and

above all, the time left on the scoreboard. Another

moment had to have been the McAllen Me-morial vs San Antonio

Reagan football game at McAllen Memorial Stadi-um in the State 5A Divi-sion II Regional Football Finals just last season.

The Mustangs ran out of time, midfield, trailing 35-28. Many fans kept look-ing at the scoreboard for hope. Some fans hoped

that their last glance would change the score,

putting the Mustangs ahead. Others, glanced numerous of times, hop-ing that the clock would read “more time” is still left to play and score.

At some games in South Texas, these score-

boards can play match makers too. The video cameras will catch a couple in the stands

and with a heart, it’s the “Kissing Cam” at work.

Other times, children are caught dancing to music and these scoreboards will show it live on the

screen to entertain crowds.

Ever wonder what these scoreboards have done for many families on a football Friday night?

These scoreboards have brought families together

to cheer on their sons and daughters. These scoreboards have cre-

ated great emotions and memories. No matter how big these score-

boards are in size, in the end, it will still tell the score. With time, any-

thing is possible. That’s why coaches will always tell their players to play

to their best of their abilities as long as there

is still time left on that scoreboard.

(Donna, Tx)-Coaches always tell players that the next game on the schedule is the biggest game. And while that’s true in the most literal of senses, more than likely several of those players have one game circled or starred or marked up in some way on their calendars. That’s the rivalry game. Weslaco vs. Donna and San Benito vs. Los Fresnos are two of the oldest and most well-known rivalries. But there are plenty out there – that was made obvious when the High School Sports Magazine Facebook page asked fol-lowers who their school’s biggest rival was. (Follow us and add your opinion to that question and many others!) Here are some of those responses (these are taken di-rectly from the High School Sports Magazine Facebook page): One fan says, “For years to come Weslaco High vs Weslaco East” while another boasted about the “La Joya Coyotes vs La Joya Palmview Lobos in a game they called Battle of the Beasts”. Probably one of the most popular rivalries is the “Battle of the Arroyo” between Harlingen and San Benito and let’s not forget “Bird Bowl” between Harlingen and Harlingen South. One other HSSM fans stated that, “the Super Bowl of the Valley” will always be Mercedes vs E-E” while another added that, “Sharyland vs

We hated each other for every single sport” Others included Lyford vs. Ray-mondville, Rio Hondo vs. Port Isabel, PSJA vs. PSJA North – there was even one for first-year program PSJA Southwest vs. PSJA Memorial. The list went on and on. In McAllen, the Nikki Rowe Warriors have become arch rivals to the McAllen Bulldogs. Early his career, Warriors head coach Paul Reyes was the offensive coordi-nator for the Bulldogs. Just last week, the Warriors fell to the Bulldogs 40-21 before a packed crowd of more than 10,000 fans at McAllen Memorial Vet-erans Stadium. There’s definitely passion behind a rivalry and there’s no lack of that in the Rio Grande Valley. “Rivalries are great for communities,” said Donna head coach Manny Moreno. Of course, rivalries can get heated. In 1996 the Redskins claimed a 16-15 victory over the Panthers. As the teams were finishing the traditional lining up and shaking hands, a fight broke out and spread across the field. Fans can be seen coming out of the stadium to join in. After about 2 min-utes, things started to calm down. Then again, in 2007, Moreno said that Weslaco coach Tony Villarreal had held back tickets for the Donna fans for the game. Villarreal denied the accusations. That was the last time the two teams played until this year. This time, the end of the game was different. After Donna scored 28 un-answered points to claim a 28-14 vic-tory, the two coaches met at midfield, shook hands and Villarreal asked Moreno if the Redskins would join the Panthers in prayer. “That was a great moment,” Moreno said. “It’s funny, one parent brought to my attention that if there would’ve been a fight that it would be front page

news.” Rivalries usually have two teams with close proximity – especially in the high school ranks. Donna and Wesla-co are no different. In fact Donna and Weslaco were part of one school dis-trict before the Donna school district voted to create the Weslaco Inde-pendent School District in 1921. Two

years later the intense Redskin-Pan-ther rivalry kicked off. To this day, the kids from both schools still intermingle – and their rivalry for one another be-gins at an early age. Moreno said. “Even in middle school we have a dis-trict so they play against each other there too.”

My 8-year-old daughter Camilla has been blessed. She brings home amaz-ing grades in school and has shown some very athletic prowess, both on the soccer field and in the karate dojo. We have this routine before every game and every special event. It goes

something like this: “Chiquita, why has God given you these wonder-ful talents?” “So I can use them Papi as best as I can,” she reponds. The next question is, “and what happens when you use these gifts?” Again, my daughter responds with, “it gives hon-or back to God and that’s when I play my best and help my team and get op-portunities to do good things.” Our routine goes like that before every game, every big test and any life-learning event that comes up. Do I want her to win? I’d be lying if I said “no.” Do I want her to score goals? Again, I’d lie if I told you “no.” But more than anything, I want her to always try her hardest, to respect others and to never, ever give up.These lessons are not just for the soccer or football field. These are life lessons. Athletes so often get a bum rap – as do coaches. But in the last few months I’ve talked with coaches who I believe really do care about the players they coach... and teach. Without putting names to these coaches faces, here

are some of the things I’ve recently heard from them.-“We can teach them lessons on the field – things about themselves – that they would never learn with a text-book.”-“There’s nothing better than seeing a young boy grow up into a young respectful man – nothing makes me happier.”-“A lot of these players don’t have a great home life. They’ve grown up in rough circumstances.” So, coaches, consider this a salute to you. For all those boys and girls (it’s not just football) you have been a role model to, or a second mom or dad, you’re doing the right thing the right way. It can be frustrating, I’m sure. But we need to remember – and live out - the same things we teach. I know as coaches you want to win (that’s what you get paid to do). But continue tak-ing it to another level. Most importantly, keep trying your hardest, respect those boys and girls and don’t give up, don’t ever give up.

If the athletes show these symptoms they are not allowed to return to any game in the same day and must be cleared by a health official. The Centers for Disease Control estimates 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions happen each year in the United States. Dr. Mark Cousins, athletic di-rector for the UIL, said growing awareness goes back to 2005 when the UIL made it a requirement for schools to have a medical advisory committee. They’ve continued to educate coaches, players and families about concussions. Most recently, the state legislature signed into law specific protocols that must be followed when athletes are showing even the most minor of concussion-like symptoms.“There’s a lot going on,” Cousins said. “There’s education, there’s teaching proper tackling techniques. There are so many ways we are going about trying to keep the athletes safe and giving the coaches and staffs and families the education and keeping them informed.” Smelling salts, which would literally snap athletes back into some type of coherent state, are no longer allowed af-ter research has shown they can do more harm than good.“As far as I can remember they used smelling salts,” said Sharyland head football Ron Adame. “But the jolt you get from the ammonia tablet may cause damage to the neck or nerves, sure that jolt will wake you up but it could lead to further injuries.” Gonzalez also added that you have to watch out what the

kids say after a big hit. “All they have to do is say ‘I got my bell rung’ and that’s a red flag. They’re automatically out of the game,” said Gonzalez, adding that there is still a lot left to interpretation regarding the UIL rules. “We have to be super cautious. You want first and foremost to take care of the well-being of the kids, but you also want them to play on Friday nights,” adds Gonzalez. Concussion symptoms don’t always appear right away either and those usually ending up being the most severe of all concussions. “The player may be able to answer questions and pass tests but then on the bus ride home he starts having a terrible headache for example,” Moss said. “Those are more dangerous. The brain has to have time to rest. That’s the key. That’s why contact the parent,” adds Moss. Cousins said that if a smaller program doesn’t have the resources to put together all that is needed according to the UIL guidelines, they can piggyback off a nearby school district‚ if there’s one nearby, that is. Moss said the pro-gram has been blessed to not have any of their athletes who have had recurring concussions or symptoms. Part of that comes with all the awareness to keep the players pro-tected, that awareness includes fellow friends, classmates and teammates.“We tell all the kids, you spend more time with each other than you do with your parents. If you see one of your friends start showing some of these signs, let someone know,” added Sharyland H.S. trainer, Moss.

(Pharr, Tx)-Bruce Bush still remembers his retired days from coaching high school football. “I would go out and sit on the porch every morning and watch the sun come up,” he said. “One day I started thinking how hard I was on the players. I was really tough on them and would say to myself that if I ever did it again, I’d have more fun.” Again, Bruce Bush would start to reminisce the next morning. “I’d get up the next morning and would think how hard I was on the coaches too.” It seemed that the more Bush spent time at home during his retirement, the more he found himself thinking about finding a way to get back into the game, his way. The retirement phase didn’t last long. “I wanted to go back and be a nice guy and that’s the attitude I came back with,” he said.

Bush is entering his fifth season as head coach of the PSJA North Raiders and has amassed 270 career coaching victories (following Week 2), placing him 18th on the all-time win list in the state of Texas. Prior to the first game of the season, he was just three wins behind Alto High School’s Lucky Gamble and five wins behind Crockett High School’s Monte Driskell. G.A. Moore is the all-time state leader with 426 wins. Bush’s first win came in his coaching debut as Dimmitt High School cruised to a 49-0 win over Springlake-Earth. Bush said he can recall the milestone victories. His 100th, his 200th (while coaching at San Marcos) and his 250th (PSJA North defeating PSJA). The next milestone is 300. gonna be close enough where I guess I’ll have to do it.” Bush’s first exposure to the Valley came in 1962 and 1963 while playing football for Needville high school. They played the then-powerful PSJA Bears who went to the state championship game in both 1962 and 1963, one year after Donna became the first (and still only) team to win a state football championship. Needville visited PSJA in 1963 and the teams tied 6-6.Twenty years later‚ in 1981 it would be his turn to become head coach for those same PSJA Bears. Bush was in his sixth year of coaching and had already won a state championship while coaching at Port Neches-Groves, defeating legendary Odessa Permian 20-10 before an estimated 42,000 fans. But through all those football Friday nights, “Football has just always been a part of our family,” Bush said. “My Dad told me ‘I’m not gonna make you play football but if you don’t it’s not gonna feed you.”

(Edinburg, Tx)-The Edinburg North Cou-gars are trying to spoil the parade that was supposed to belong to Sharyland and Don-na. North completed its first four games of the season with a perfect 4-0 mark – and 2-0 in District 30-5A. The Cougars ended that string with a dominant defensive per-formance against La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, 31-6. Edinburg North leads the district in defense, allowing just 155 yards per game. In the matchup against the Hus-kies, the Cougars picked off three passes – two by Roy Cantu, and recovered two fumbles. Offensively they are led by dual threat quarterback Josh Vela and running back Adrain Alvarez.The Cougars’ other win in district came in a thriller over Edinburg Economedes, 21-20. “We’re playing well right now but there’s a lot of room for improvemen,” said Edinburg head coach Roy Garza. The Cougars host the Redskins on Oct. 4 and travel to Sharyland on Nov. 2.

Ed-inburg Economedes senior volleyball player, Leigha Brown wins the honor after posting 40 kills, 33 digs, and five blocks in their win over Sharyland in District 30-5A. Brown is also ranked No.3 in her class and is a two-time State 5A Track and Field qualifier. Brown also set a Valley best record in the 110 hurdles last April. (Edinburg, Tx)-When Edin-burg Economedes and McAl-len Memorial played one another in Week 1 at Cats Sta-dium, nobody realized how it would develop the landscape for the rest of the season. As Angel Duran’s 39-yard field goal sailed through the uprights with :29 seconds remaining, lifted the Econo-medes Jaguars to a shocking

24-21 victory over McAllen Memorial. The win sent nu-merous messages out to Dis-tricts 30-5A and District 31-5A. To opponents from Dis-trict 30-5A it said watch out for Economedes. That buzz that hinted that they would be a good team this year fol-lowing an 0-10 season is not just rumor‚ it’s now water-

cooler talk. “This was big,” said Economedes head coach Gabe Pena. “After not win-ning any games last year and to be able to take these baby steps is great for the kids and this program.” McAllen took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter on a 2-yard quarterback sneak by QB Diego Chrysler with 7:46 left in the third quarter. It looked as if the Mustangs were

going to put the game away in the fourth, driving down to the Economedes 3-yard line. But a bad snap sent Chrysler chasing down a loose ball and ended in a 21-yard loss and Memorial came up empty. Against Edinburg North (3-0, 1-0)‚ Jaguars QB Luis Alva-rez was tackled and is now out with an ACL. Despite their QB loss, the Jag-uars find themselves at 2-1 and 0-1 in the district now but have made themselves contenders for a postseason playoff and a team that others won’t over-look when they come to town. McAllen Memorial bounced back with an impressive win over San Benito, a favorite to win the difficult District 31-5A. The Mustangs are also 2-1 overall and 1-0 in their district. The Mustangs defense has al-lowed 204 yards per game and will play October 5th against PSJA Memorial (4-0, 2-0) at home. The Mustangs will then meet Nikki Rowe and PSJA North all at McAllen Memo-rial Veterans Stadium.

Robert Vela H.S. Begins Football Season in District 30-5A


(Edinburg, Tx)-High School Sports Magazine kicked off its season with the Sabercats. There’s a lot of pigskin excite-ment in Edinburg. Much of that comes from the new Edin-burg Robert Vela High School, which started its first football season under the direction of head coach Michael Salinas. Vela High School is the prod-uct of three other Edinburg Schools – Edinburg High, Edinburg North and Edinburg Economedes – and is named after longtime head coach Robert Vela, who died of stom-ach cancer in 2007.

The SaberCats have only had the excitement of playing once at home thus far, against PSJA in what was an emotional pre-game ceremony. They have their final two home games of the year in October with Edin-burg on Oct. 5 and LJ Palm-view coming to town Oct. 19.John Trevino leads the Saber-Cats at the quarterback posi-tion and has showed a strong arm so far. Gennaro Cavazos is featured at running back and recently put together a 200-yard rush-ing game for the Robert Vela High School SaberCats.

(Mercedes, Tx)-The first three weeks of the 2012 season proved to be pretty solid for the Mercedes Tigers (2-1). And if the Tigers 13-3 win over La Feria was any indication of things to come, the year could end up more than solid – but in contention for the District 32-4A crown. A punishing and unforgiving running attack – Matt Guz-man had 206 yards rushing, Gilbert Vela added 101 and quarterback Isaiah Garza chipped in 95 – found its rhythm in its third game of the season and looks to continue that quest through October. During that month, the Tigers have a pair of home games against Rio Grande City (0-3) and Valley View (not your normal Valley View but a Valley View team that started the season 3-0 after winning just four games in the past six seasons combined) and will go on the road at PSJA South-west before closing against another district title contender Edcouch-Elsa. The Tigers captured that win following a 20-16 victory over the Hidalgo Pirates. The Tigers are led by fourth year head coach Mike Uribe and are coming off a 4-7 season, going 4-4 in the district, falling to Calallen in the Class 4A Division II Bi-District. “We played a tough non-district schedule to only get better as district begins. The key is to start district without any injuries,” says Uribe. The Tigers have done just that too. The Tigers have held their opponents to just 59 points total in three games (Calallen scored 40 points) but on of-fense, the Tigers are on the prowl with 300.0 total yards gained per night. Guzman already has 429.0 yards for the season. Defensively, the Tigers are allowing less than 265.0 yards per game. “I’m excited about this season and we just need to remain focused and play four quarters of football,” adds Uribe. Last year, the Tigers clinched the last playoff spot in 32-4A with a win over Roma (3-0).

(Mission, Tx)-Next Friday could prove just what District 32-4A could be in for when the Valley View Tigers play host to the Mission Eagles. Both go into the game with perfect 3-0 records. The Valley View Tigers are the surprise team of the Rio Grande Valley this year, winning their first three games after winning just four games total over the past six seasons. Alexis Guajardo and Juan Vasquez lead a running attack that has averaged more than 300 yards on the ground in each of the Tigers’ first three victories. Mission, on the other hand, has been led by its defense – especially the linebacking crew headed by Erick Flores, who tallied 21 tackles in the Eagles’ 31-24 overtime victory over Midway Tuloso for their third win of the season. “I knew we had a good nucleus coming back so we felt good about that aspect,” said fourth-year head coach Mario Pena. “Our defensive output led us for the first two and a half games. Finally the offense woke up in the second half of the last game. That’s what we’ve been waiting for.” Pena said he felt the offense was being run a little too conservative so he went to his offensive coordinator and asked him to “pull the trigger.” “They responded to it,” Pena said. I told the team a lot would be said about their character in the second half. They responded and we started to move the ball.” And while the offense is coming around, it’s gonna be the defense that will have to stay home against the misdirection plays and ground-and-pound running game of the Tigers. “They run a slot-T and that’s what we saw against Tuloso so it will help us to see it again,” Pena said. “Their backs are impressive and they have a lot of speed. The big

thing on defense is to stay home since they run a lot of misdirection. You can’t get overly aggressive against that.“They’re gonna be moti-vated too. They want to make history for their school.”

UIL State Football Championships to be held at

The state champion-ship football games have been at Cow-boys Stadium for the past three seasons. The UIL wants to play all the state championship games over a long weekend at the same site. Last year, more than 255,000 estimated

fans attended the games at Cowboys Stadium.

In 2012, the games will be played on Dec. 20-22 – at Cow-boys Stadium. On December 23rd, the Dallas Cowboys will play host to the New Orlean Saints. “This is a great weekend for sports in Texas. Fans will get a chance to see state football

Donna at Sharyland: Call it the rematch of the year. Donna still remembers that 49-yard field goal from 2011. Both teams will be ready. Sharyland will have already played the upstart and very talented‚ Economedes Jaguars. Here’s the scenario if Economedes beats Sharyland (at Economedes, Sept. 27), then the even more must-see game is Nov. 1 when Donna travels to Cats Stadium.

PSJA North at McAllen Memorial, McAllen Nikki Rowe at PSJA Memorial and Weslaco East at Weslaco. Ok, so we put all these together because we really don’t know what’s gonna happen with this district. All six of these teams could be fight-ing for first or fourth... or anyplace else. Oh yea, so could the other three teams in this district - San Benito, PSJA and McHi.

OCT. 26thPSJA Southwest at Roma: PSJA Southwest started its first varsity season 2-1 and the Javelinas look like they’re a veteran football team. Roma has also started 3-0. If they’re still in the hunt going into this game and win it with games left against Mercedes and Valley View, they might snag the first playoff spot in school history.

(Mission, Tx)-The Valley’s top Class 5A volleyball teams won’t have to travel too far in the post-season this year – unless one of them emerges victorious in the Region IV Class 5A tournament, which will be held at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Nov. 9-10. It’s the first time that the tournament makes its way to the Valley.“This has been a long time com-ing for the Valley,” said Edinburg CISD Athletic Director Joe Filo-teo Jr., who is also the director of the Region IV Class 5A tourna-ment. “We were able to go and convince the UIL to move the site

from what was originally all the time in San Antonio.” In 2011, Los Fresnos advanced the farthest, moving on to the Regional Semifinals before fall-ing to San Antonio Johnson in straight sets. Johnson then fell in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Coppell in five sets, falling 16-14 in the finale. This year, Sharyland, Edinburg North and Economedes are bat-tling it out for the unofficial title as best in the Valley. The Lady Rattlers lost to the Economedes Lady Jaguars midway through the season. It was the Lady Rat-

tlers’ first loss in the Valley with a pending matchup against Edin-burg North coming. “We got lazy and toyed with them in that fifth set and Leigha just emerged,” said Sharyland head coach Laura Cavazos, whose team’s next game is a rematch with Leigha Brown and the Jag-uars at Sharyland. The match is at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 and it will be “Dig for a Cure” as the Lady Rattlers will honor those with Diabetes. All proceeds from that game will go to the RGV Diabetes Associa-tion. The Rattlers bounced back and defeated Edinburg North in four sets 29-27, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22. The Rattlers are led by a trio of senior hitters/blockers with Elise Smith and Kiki Honrubia on the outside and Yamo Monie in the middle.

(McAllen, Tx)- The production crew from FOX Sports Southwest made the trip to McAllen for the first time to feature the FOX Sports Southwest High School Football Friday show in Texas. For FSSW reporter, Angela Hamann, it would be her first trip to the Rio Grande Valley and immediately Hamann found out why so many people love South Texas. “This is great. The peo-ple are very friendly and this area is beautiful,” adds Hamann. Throughout the game, the former University of Texas golfer could be seen talking about the McAllen and Nikki Rowe game as scores from throughout the State of Texas started coming in on the live set. “We are broadcasting our four-hour show live from McAllen, Texas. This project started five years ago and now has developed into a weekly traveling show throughout the state of Texas. It’s a lot of work but we get to meet so many fans,” says Clay Powell, production coordinator of FOX Sports Southwest. By the end of the night, McHi had defeated McAllen Rowe 40-21 at McAllen Veterans Memorial and during one segment of Hamann’s sideline live recordings, she mentioned the cool-breeze she felt during the game. “It started to feel a bit chilly on the sidelines but that’s me, I get cold easily,” laughed Hamann. For the Marble Falls High School Graduate, Hamann loves this game of football. She’s been around football all her life. Her father, former University of Texas quarterback, Marty Akins,

FOX Sports Southwest Meets HSSM Staff

High School Sports Across Texas played with the Longhorns from 1972 to 1975 under Darrell Royal. He was an All-American and the only Longhorn quarter-back to start three seasons under the UT wishbone offense. And before that, he played under his father Ray Akins. Ray was the head coach at Gregory Portland High School near Corpus Chris-ti. He won 302 games during his career. Oh, and just to mention, Hamann is also related to New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees too. “Yes, he’s my cousin and he played for Austin Westlake High School. You see, football in our family never dies. This game is part of my life and I love it,” says Hamann. The show features four hours of live programming on Friday nights on FOX Sports Southwest beginning with Football Friday Live presented by State Farm from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. followed by Football Friday Blitz from 7:30 -10:30 p.m. which features three hours of highlight football and live reports from throughout the state. The show wraps up with Football Friday Overtime from 10:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. High School Sports Magazine, a regional publication from the Rio Grande Valley, met with Hamann and her staff and HSSM publisher, David A. Amador was able to get some live shots dur-ing the breaks throughout the show with anchors Jeff Power and Travis Stewart, along with Hamann. After the show, Hamann had wished she had more time to have spent seeing McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. “I hear the fajitas and guacamole is great in local restaurants,” she laughs.

OneonOneHSSM: Does the talk of winning the state championship back in 1961 get old?

Moreno: It never does. There’s pride here with that event taking place years ago. The community is proud of what was accomplished – the only state champion-ship in Valley history. That’s quite an ac-complishment.

HSSM: This community is crazy about football and is very involved. Does that add any pressure to your job?

Moreno: There’s always pressure in this type of job – especially when you’re the head coach at Donna. There are high ex-pectations within the school and the com-munity and we put pressure our our staffs and ourselves to win. It’s great to have a community that backs and supports your program like here but sure there’s more pressure.

HSSM: A few years ago where the wins weren’t coming as often as Donna is used to notching them. How did you get through that?

Moreno: Our goal was and is to move the program forward and we’ve moved the program forward. During that time we just kept working hard at it and made the best of things. We weren’t able to win as many games during that time but we held our heads up high. You have to be ready to step up and take the challenge head on and perform.

HSSM: What are your proudest moments as a coach?

Moreno: You know, the wins are good and all but the proudest moments are when I see young boys grow up to become re-sponsible young men with an education. It

makes a difference when you affect kids’ lives in a positive manner.

HSSM: How are players different today than 20 years ago?

Moreno: Kids are going to be a reflection of what society is. We have different situ-ations happening everywhere today – es-pecially at home, things that we wouldn’t have so much back when we were grow-ing up. I think athletics is a way of feeding their lives in a positive manner – to show them how to be disciplined and, hopefully, carry on in their lives.

HSSM: We talk about rivalries in this is-sue. Who was your rival growing up?

Moreno: I went to Donna High School – of course it was Weslaco.

HSSM: (Laughs) Thanks Coach Moreno!

In this pigskin-crazed town of Donna, Moreno attended school and played football for the Red-skins, so he knows a lot about Donna’s wonderful history and tradition - and the pressure that

comes from being a head football coach where expectations are super high.
