Thank you all for your contribution to 2013
As we come to the closing
of another year, the Board,
Managing Director and the
Executive Management of
the Steamships Trading
Company would like to
sincerely thank all of our
“Steamies” people for their
hard work and dedication
in the various business units of the Group in
2013.
Whatever part of the Group you are working
in, as the year draws to a close, I congratulate
you for making Steamships the great Papua
New Guinean company that it is today.
Whatever job it is that you do each day,
through your commitment and efforts you
are continuing to uphold the positive image
and record of success of ‘Steamies”.
Thank you all for your tireless effort despite
the economic challenges faced in 2013 and
we hope that despite the turbulent economic
head-winds blowing, the PNG economy will
continue to maintain its steady performance
in 2014.
On behalf of the Board and Executive Man-
agement I wish you and your loved ones a
safe, healthy and happy end of year holiday
period and our very best wishes for a suc-
cessful 2014.
Merry Christmas
&
Prosperous 2014!!!!
- Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2014 to you all from the Tok Steamies Team
Highlights of the Year 2013 has been a challenging year but despite that Steamships has continued
to operate and launch new projects within the year.
Pacific Palms Property commenced and continued with its warehouse pro-
ject in Madang, the Kitty Hawk project (warehouses) in 6-Mile, Port Mo-
resby and the Waigani Central shopping centre next to the Waigani Stop N
Shop. In Lae, the successful completion and launch of the Blaikie Apart-
ments was done in October (see full story on page 5) with the Windward
East Apartment launched early this month (see full story on page 7).
Steamships Shipping‟ Agencies services was successfully handed over to
China Navigation Company early in the year.
November saw the closure of Steamships‟ Marine Engineering Services
(MES) operation. Unfortunately over the years, despite the best efforts of
the management and staff, MES had been making significant losses. The
current economic slow down in PNG added to these losses and it was with
great regret that the MES operation was closed.
Despite that, the Steamships Coastal Shipping added another vessel to their
existing fleet bringing the total to 16.
East West Transport completed its Port Moresby warehouse racks for prod-
ucts as well as introduced a new training simulator for its Lae operations.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Steamships hosts annual Red Shield Appeal Golf Day
The RH Hypermart were the winners of the 2013 Steamships
Red Shield Appeal Golf day tournament, with last year‟s win-
ners Heli Solutions coming in second place while Steamships
Trading Company came in third place.
A total of 28 teams participated on the day which started out
bright and sunny but soon after the rain started to kick in but it
did not dampen the spirit of the teams who went out on the
course to raise money for a good cause.
Steamships Trading Company General Manager Logistics, Rob
Bradshaw thanked all the teams for registering for the tourna-
ment and said the funds raised would go to Salvation Army to
assist their work in saving lives and giving hope to the people
who were in much need of the assistance that Salvation Army
gave.
The Salvation Army is a Christian Church that provides health
centres, health worker training and clinics and feeds the home-
less. It also provides disaster relief in cases of Tsunamis, flood-
ing, landslides and air crashes and many more.
Steamships would like to thank the individuals and companies
who gave generously to support the RSA golf day; Craig Bur-
rows and Mike Purdy, Salvation Army, Tamzin and Derek
Hunter, Air Niugini, Brendon Coombs of Driftwood Resort,
Mila Nash, Consort, Monian Ltd, Pacific Palms Property, Holi-
day Inn, Crown Plaza, Coral Sea Hotels, Grand Papua, Laga

Helping to develop future leaders of the country
Steamships Shipping General Manager, Susana Germino presenting the keys
of the minivan to The Voice Executive Director, Serena Sumanop.
Christmas is a time of giving and Steamships Shipping last
week presented the car keys of a minivan to the organisa-
tion, The Voice Inc.
Steamships Shipping General Manager, Susana Germino in
presenting the keys to The Voice Inc Executive Director,
Serena Sumanop said she was grateful to be able to assist
organizations that were supporting the young people of the
country through their work.
Ms Germino said the youths of today are the leaders of to-
morrow and the programs that The Voice was carrying out
were very encouraging.
The Voice Inc is a youth development organisation run by
youths for youths.
Through training, mentoring, and guidance they encourage
young Papua New Guineans to look within themselves to
discover their unique personalities and also create avenues
for young people to get involved in their communities
through advocating on issues and implementing small pro-
jects.
Ms Sumanop said the gesture by Steamships Shipping is
tremendous and will go a long way in assisting them in
their community projects which they have going on within
the city.
She said there is so much hope that lies within the young
people and if given the opportunity they have amazing
dreams and can rise up to be solution providers.
The minivan was purchased from Ela Motors at a cost of
K40,000 with security systems and other features fitted to
the vehicle.
The Voice is supported by the University of Papua New
Guinea.

A weeklong Cancer Awareness program
was organised for the staff at the Steam-
ships Head Office with staff from other
divisions within Downtown Port Moresby
attending.
The daily awareness program was run dur-
ing the staff lunch hour so staff make time
available to attend.
The topics for the week were Breast Can-
cer, Cervical Cancer, Prostrate Cancer,
Cancer of the Bowel and Cancer Preven-
tion Food and Lifestyle.
The Cancer Prevention Food and Lifestyle
talk coincided with the health breakfast
which was made up of fruits. The topic was
delivered by Pacific Adventist University
Senior Health Science Lecturer, Ruth
Galang.
N e i l
Papenfus
from Port
Services also was a guest speaker and
spoke of how cancer affects not only the
person living with it but also the family
members.
From the weeklong awareness program,
staff have shown interest in starting a
group to help spread the awareness of
cancer to the schools and the communi-
ties in which they live in.
Going forward, staff from the Depart-
ment of Health who are active in cancer
awareness program will be coming in to
teach interested staff on how to do
awareness so that staff can go out to their
communities and carry out awareness
programs.
Organised by Mona Lisa-Giheno, Illan
Sevua and Wanita Wakus, the idea was to
get staff to understand that cancer is a
lifestyle disease and is preventable unless
it was hereditary.
Guest speakers were Dr Mathias Sapuri
and Dr Hennelly Taitara. People living
with cancer who came to share their testi-
monies were Janet Yaki, an ostomate and
founder of PNG Stoma Association and
Laga Industries Fore Bai who was re-
cently diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
The program was an eye opener to a lot of
staff and most of them gained understand-
ing of the different cancers and the causes
that triggers the disease which is killing a
lot of Papua New Guineans.

HSSE Policy Reviewed
HSSE NEWS
The Company HSSE Policy was reviewed by the
Sustainability Committee and has been approved by
the STC Board and is called the Steamships Trading
Company Sustainable Development Policy.
This will soon be distributed throughout the organi-
zations. All STC Divisions will be expected to
adopt or adapt and align their HSSE and Sustainabil-
ity Policies to that of Corporate.
STC H&S System Procedures have been developed
and are live on the HSSE Portal. Divisions will be
using these procedures as source of best practice to
adopt/adapt their Division specific HSSE Procedures
to ensure alignment with corporate requirements. As
identified, relevant procedures / updates will be iden-
tified and uploaded onto the portal.
HSSE audits (internal & external) have been con-
ducted as per schedule and the audit action item ad-
dressing is done by the respective divisions with
overall tracking and monitoring managed by STC
corporate HSSE, and reviewed at the monthly H&S
committee. Divisions are aware of the requirement to
effectively close out audit action items to reduce
H&S risk exposures. The frequency of audits has
been reviewed by the H&S Committee and with the
final 2014 audit schedule sent to the respective divi-
sions in December 2013.
The Group is seeing improvement in accident/
incident, hazard and near miss reporting with the
heightened awareness at the divisional level, but
quality reporting issues remain and has been high-
lighted and addressed in meetings, with additional
training and awareness.
Some good progress in HSSE capacity at the divi-
sional level, however opportunities still exist to up
skill gap areas.
The HSSE Scorecard has been reviewed by the STC
Sustainability Committee and will be sent out for
implementation in mid December 2014.
The HSSE Portal is now live with training of users completed. Usage rate
has been slow but beginning to see improvement. One on one refresher
training with users is scheduled for mid November to further identify and
address user issues.
Risk assessments including job safety analysis is work in progress at the
divisions. Risk assessment templates together with the guidelines have
been distributed to the divisions and are currently in the implementation
stage. Risk assessment guideline is also on the HSSE portal for easy access.
STC Group introduces HSSE portal
The STC Group as established an H&S Committee which comprises of the
Managing Director, the General Manager Corporate Affairs, the Group
HSSE Manager and two HSSE divisional mangers. This group meets each
month to deliberate on HSSE matters and to provide advice and direction on
H&S issues for the Group. Two meetings have been held so far with the
third meeting scheduled end of December 2013. The STC Sustainability
Committee was also formed in 2013 with two meetings held so far. This
committee comprises of the Managing Director, the General Manager Cor-
porate Affairs, The Finance Director, a representative from John Swire and
Sons and the Group HSSE Manager. This committee meets each quarter
and deliberates and provides advice and direction on Sustainability issues
and matters. Both H&S and the Sustainability Committee were formed
with the intention to have a bottom up top down approach to managing
H&S and Sustainability matters/issues.
HSSE Committees have been established at respective divisions with meet-
ings conducted. Divisions have been asked to forward copies of meeting
minutes to corporate to help fine tune agenda items and the meeting format
to ensure alignment. GMs are required to attend and chair at least 10/12 of
these monthly meetings going forward. A central HSSE Mgrs meeting is
conducted at respective divisions each month followed by a walk through
inspection of the facility. This meeting provides an avenue for divisions to
present their corresponding month‟s H&S performance and is a useful fo-
rum to share ideas and best practices and to ensure alignment in H&S.
Plans are in place to roll out a poster competition involving employees‟
children. Details are being worked on and will be sent out once finalized.
The Poster competition will be ongoing and will be held every six months.
Guidelines together with the poster competition rules will be sent out in
January 2014.

The Red Cross Blood Bank team was invited to the Pacific
Palm Property office recently to collect blood from willing staff
members. The response was very good from the Repair &
Maintenance team with support from the STC Head Office led
by Illan, and Jerry Fareho and Henry Ronomu from Steamships
Shipping. The timing was perfect as there was an appeal by the
Blood Bank in the daily print media that day requesting for
blood due to blood shortage at the Port Moresby General Hospi-
tal. The Blood Bank‟s team leader said his team appreciated
the fact that the staff were sacrificing their time to donate blood
that will save lives.
The Steamships Group is considering making it an annual event

The Marine Engineering Services (MES) section of Steamships
Shipping closed its operation in November.
Steamships Trading Company, Managing Director Geoff Cundle
said MES had been an important business unit of the company
for many years providing ship repair services to its customers.
Unfortunately, the current economic slowdown in the country
added to the losses and it had to be closed down.
All 66 staff were paid their full entitlements under the „Maritime
Awards‟ and efforts were made to assist them in finding alterna-

Steamships Shipping General Manager, Susanna Germino said
the addition onto the current fleet is a sign of commitment by

“It‟s a sign that we are committed to the industry in which we

Steamships Shipping staff undergo weeklong Safety Training
By Alois Seneka
How many of you answer your mobile
phones when you‟re driving? Yeah, I
thought so (the audience look up with
guilty smiles). And how many of you text
while driving? How many of you take your
eye off the road just to see if your finger is
on the correct button to switch on the car
stereo?? The smile turns to small chuckles
and the audience tries to recall a time they
did those things.
We do these things every day without even
thinking of the implications it can have if
something goes wrong.
Driving safely was one of the topics that
was contained in the weeklong „Safe Voy-
age‟ Safety Seminar that was organised for
the Steamships Shipping employees.
All the staff from Joint Venture Stevedor-
ing (JVS), Steamships Coastal Shipping
and Steamships Shipping Admin were
grouped into 10 teams where each team
was named after the 10 boats of Coastal Shipping.
Each team represented a vessel and they had to bring their vessel
from Kiunga to Port Moresby by scoring points through identi-
fying safety hazards and safety initiatives at the workplace. A
team was also able to subtract points from the opposing teams if
safety hazards were identified in that team. The first team/boat
to reach Port Moresby is declared the winner.
The weeklong Safe Voyage program was organised by Steam-
ships Shipping‟s Health Safety Security & Environment (HSSE)
Manager, Jerry Fareho and commenced on October 28 and com-
pleted on November 1.
What really stood out on the last day of the program at Crown
Plaza was the second segment of a video titled „Just Drive‟. It
was about a lone character Distractions played by the narrator.
The video was about the simplest of distractions being responsi-
ble for major traffic accidents, incidents and near misses that
occur daily on roads.
The roads we travel on every day is certainly no different. It was
a real eye opener. Because these distractions; though small, sim-
ple or insignificant are the very acts that causes drivers to take
their eyes off the road and in cases of collateral damage, can and
will pull the line between you, your family, your job and most
unfortunately your life. So to all our drivers or those who have
vehicles and to those who happen to be behind the wheel at
some point…, be aware of these distractions.
The program, from a participant‟s point of view, was basically
to build, update and or improve our sense of awareness to our
individual surroundings and within the course of the one week,
so much was achieved. Critical fire hazards were identified, se-
curity issues were raised, poor housekeeping and many others…,
This was really beneficial both ways. Participants acquired the
necessary knowledge on various safety issues whilst also help-
ing the business identify critical issues surrounding its business
operation.
In the course of this program, participants‟ learned how to fill the
safety observation form; identify various safety issues; know the
risk hierarchy; assess risks and taking the appropriate action and
more.
The winners of the weeklong program turned out to be „Team
Goada‟. Everyone sort of anticipated that they would win be-
cause they led on the score board for the most part of the week.
Each member from team Goada was awarded a free entry ticket
to the Paradise Cinemas with allowances for a child and a meal
combo.
For all the losers, don‟t be disheartened, Steamships Shipping
General Manager, Susana Germino has announced that „Safe
Voyage‟ will be an annual event.
So gear up and get ready for 2014, for it will be bigger and better.
Till then, I‟ll see you on the next Safe Voyage
