Dear Stakeholders

Having a 170 year old legacy with excellence in several disciplines, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has been a brand name of itself producing engineers, technocrats, architects, managers and social scientist of the highest order. The Department of Humanities & Social Sciences has been one of the vital departments that have contributed significantly in providing valuable human inputs to the whole process of learning. As part of its endeavour to impart need-based futuristic education, it has introduced an M.Sc. Programme in Economics which focuses on producing practising economists who are better able to combine theoretical knowledge with practical challenges of both local and global economies. The programme has been designed in such a way that it lends a very solid foundation in economic theories and their diverse applications, notably in the sub-fields of Financial Economics, Development Economics, and Public Policy.

The M.Sc. programme provides hands on training to students by exposing them to the basics of applied mathematics, statistics, econometrics, techniques of cross sectional, time series, and panel data analysis, policy formulation and evaluation. Students go through a rigorous training as they undergo continuous evaluation through tutorials, mid-term test, end-term test and seminar presentations. They are encouraged to sharpen their communication and soft skills by undertaking regular practice sessions in writing and speaking skills. Many special lectures and sessions by established scholars and experts from outside are organized during the programme to provide opportunities to students to interact and enhance their knowledge beyond their curriculum.

Our M.Sc. students get valuable practical experience and exposure through summer internships in reputed organization in their respective areas of specialization. We, through a very competent and committed team of teachers, empower and equip our students with knowledge and skills that help them take challenging careers in public as well as private sector enterprises. They are also equipped with values like honesty, integrity, leadership, hard work, perseverance, optimism and group dynamics which make them desirable as professionals.

I extend a very warm welcome to all of you and look forward to your invaluable participation in the placement initiatives of our M.Sc. students. I assure you that our students, equipped with solid learning and unassuming disposition, will certainly fulfill expectations of the corporate world and make wonderful colleagues and team leaders.
