Rotary breaks records, puts polio on notice at Sydney convention
During Friday's world record-breaking Sydney Harbour bridge climb, Rotary members raised enough money to protect 240,000 kids from polio. Photo Credit: Rotary International/Alyce Henson Polio took a hit at this year's Rotary convention in Sydney, Australia.
First there was the record-breaking climb across the Sydney Harbour Bridge that raised enough
money to protect 240,000 kids from polio. On 30 May, two days before the official opening of the
convention, 340 participants ascended the bridge, eclipsing the record previously held by Oprah
Winfrey for most climbers on the bridge. Waving 278 flags, they also broke the Guinness World
Record for most flags flown on a bridge.
Then it was announced that the World's Biggest Commercial, Rotary's public awareness campaign
for polio eradication, set a Guinness World Record for largest photo awareness campaign. More
than 100,000 people from 170 countries have uploaded their photos, including Archbishop
Desmond Tutu, Bill Gates, Archie Panjabi, Jackie Chan, and many more.
But the biggest news was the $101 million pledged to polio eradication. Australian Prime Minister
Tony Abbott opened the convention on 1 June with a commitment from his government of $100
million to the PolioPlus campaign. Two days later, Sir Emeka Offor, executive vice chair of
Chrome Group, announced a $1 million gift to The Rotary Foundation to help end polio.
"Scores of my friends and classmates fell victim to this dreaded disease," said Sir Emeka, who
serves as Rotary's PolioPlus ambassador in Nigeria. "As a young man I vowed that I would
someday do something significant to end polio in Nigeria."

While Rotary's work to end polio took center stage at the convention, it wasn't the only Rotary
initiative getting attention down under. Here are some highlights from the Sydney convention,
which ran 1-4 June:
Providing clean water. Collaboration and partnerships were emphasized at this year's World
Water Summit, held 30 May. Global experts in clean water and sanitation urged attendees to join
with the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and governments to work more efficiently
and effectively.
Empowering youth. Australian cricket star Brett Lee, founder of Mewsic, and Maya Ajmera,
founder of the Global Fund for Children and former Rotary Scholar, inspired attendees with their
dedication to providing a better life for the world's poorest children.
Promoting peace. Mwila Chigaga, former Rotary Peace Fellow and gender specialist for African
Regions at the International Labour Organization, spoke to convention goers about ensuring decent
work and equal opportunities for men and women.
Fighting disease. Renee Saunders, senior public health adviser for the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in helping to achieve
an AIDS-free generation. Professor Martin Silink spoke of the challenges he overcame — with
Rotary's help —
Rotary International President's Monthly Message June 2014
R.I. President 2013-2014 Ron Burton.
We have a saying in Oklahoma that you need to leave the woodpile just a little
higher than you found it. To do that, I needed to ask you to get involved.
Involvement is what our theme this year – Engage Rotary, Change Lives – is all
about. And, as each of us has done that – as each of us has gotten up out of our
chairs and truly engaged Rotary – we have changed lives.
This year, I asked each one of you to bring in one new member. The Board has
laid a foundation for strengthening membership around the globe: Sixteen
regional membership plans are now in place. They are built around making sure

that we give people a reason to be in Rotary. I believe that if we can get
prospective members to help us with a project – it could be reading to kids, or
working in a soup kitchen, or picking up trash along the highway – the rest will
take care of itself. They will realize that they made a difference in someone's
life. And they'll also realize that when you give through Rotary service, you get
so much more in return.
I also asked each one of you to make a gift of some amount to our Rotary
Foundation. All of our governors did that and became the first class in the
history of Rotary to make that commitment.
Sometimes we get comfortable in
going to our club and not having any
responsibility. Maybe it's because we
haven't been asked to be more
engaged. And, of course, it's great to
go to your meeting and see your
friends. But if you want to get fired up,
you need to be doing projects. Hands-on projects are great equalizers. When
you're unloading boxes off a truck, you're just like the next person, and that
person is just like you. When everyone's serving together, there's camaraderie,
and that's how you keep people engaged.
Rotarians sometimes don't realize all that Rotary is doing and is capable of
doing. If they could witness the impact of the projects I have seen this year, it
would change their lives. They would understand that they belong to an
organization whose members have a common desire to do something good and
who, working together, accomplish incredible things.
I continue to be in awe of the good I see Rotarians doing. I am firmly convinced
that the woodpile is just a little higher because of your efforts. It is my hope
that each one of you will continue to Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

I know I have barely been keeping you informed about my time here in Brazil as far as officially goes, but I
also realized I have yet to send you a personal email recapping and just generally thanking you for all that
you have done for me, as far as the arranging of my exchange has gone. So if you can excuse my already
rusty grammar usage, I will attempt to fill you in on my life as of recently.
Let me start of by saying this past month has been absolutely crazy for me. I have spent almost the entire
month of May traveling. From the 25th of April to the 4th of May I was attending the district 4530 conference
in three different cities of Brazil. Alto Paraiso, Caldas Novas and Brasilia (the capital). I had the opportunity
to meet all of the other 18 exchange students from my district, who were all such amazing people
. Directly after the district conference I arranged to stay in Brasilia for 5 nights with a temporary host family,
instead of flying back home to my host city (Palmas). I was fortunate enough to get such an amazing
temporary family that showed me almost all of Brasilia in 5 days. I stayed with a young Rotarian mother and
her 15 year old son in an apartment in a really nice area of Brasilia. After my 5 days in Brasilia I went on a 9
day boat tour of the amazon with 60 other exchange students from all over Brazil. Without a doubt I will say
that it was the best 9 days of my life. The first night we stayed in one of the nicest 5 star hotels in the city of
Manaus, and were pretty much briefed about the week’s activities ahead. Then the next morning we were
split roughly into three groups of 19. There was a living boat for each of the groups and a forth boat that was
a restaurant boat. We spent the next 7 days living, eating, traveling and even sleeping on the boats. Every
night we would sling up a hammock on one of the edges of the boat and sleep in it. We would generally
base all of our days around one main activity, with small canoe tours on the side for those who had the extra
energy. We were able to meet and spend the day with a native Amazonian tribe, and even play a soccer
match against some of their older members (that travel to the city to play). We went on numerous hikes
through the actual amazon jungle itself. I was able to hold and take pictures with a sloth (my favourite
animal). The whole group laughed so much at how excited I was to meet a sloth for the first time. I also
almost fell of the boat trying to push in front of the line to hold the sloth. I would say the highlight of the tour
for me was the privilege of getting to meet all the exchange students and build such good friendships with
them. I returned back to Palmas on the 19th of May (my birthday) and I have already booked plane tickets
and organized with Rotary on this side to go visit one of the friends I made on the trip. I'll be flying to São

Paulo on Tuesday and will be staying for the remainder of the week there.
As far as life goes: school is going well. Jiu Jitsu is going very well. My Portuguese is coming along very
nicely. I'm still staying with my first host family. I attend the Rotary meetings here very regularly. I have a
great group of friends that I see almost every day. The next group of inbounds should be arriving at the end
of July/ beginning of August.
Helderberg Sunrise was visited by Vic Starkey from the Rotary Club of Cambridge in District 1080. Vic had just attended the R.I. Convention in Sydney, Australia and gave us a taste of what this major event in the Rotary Calendar was like to attend. Vic also exchanged Club Banners with HSRC President Carl-Heinz Duisberg (above)
