Teachingchildrenhowtoregulatetheiremotionsisanessentialskilltheycanusethroughouttheirlife.ByteachingchildrenthatallemotionsareOKandbyteachingthemavarietyofwaysthattheycanhelpthemselvescalmdown,theycanlearnthatnegativefeelingscomeandgo.Bycreatingaspaceinyourclassroomthatisspecificallydesignatedasa“CalmDownSpot”or“QuietArea”,wecanprovidechildrenwithasafeplaceto“cooloff”whentheyneedorwanttotakeabreakfromanupsettingsituation.Wecanalsoprovidethemwithpicturecueslikethesewhichshowdifferentstrategiesorwaysthatachildcanhelpthemselvescalmdown.Mostoften,achildwillhaveadifficulttimecomingupwithstrategiesontheirowntousewhentheyneedtocalmdown,butthesepicturesprovideavisualreminderofthingstheycantry.Achildmaywithersitquietlywithateacherforsupportortheycansitbythemselvesiftheyarefamiliarwiththepictures.Sometimesteacherspostthesepicturesonthewallatthechild’seyelevelnexttotheirdesignated“QuietArea”.Thepicturescanalsobecutoutandplacedinasmallboxtobecarriedtodifferentareasoftheclassroom.Eachstrategyshouldbedemonstratedandtaughtbyateacherinalargeorsmallgroupbeforebeingusedinthe“QuietArea”.
