    An organizational structure consists of

    activities such as task allocation,

    coordination and supervision, which are

    directed towards the achievement of

    organizational aims.

    A tall organization contrasts with a flat

    organization, since it has an extended

    vertical structure with well-defined but long

    A tall organisational structure is one way

    that a company can be organized. This type

    of organisational structure has many levels

    A tall organization structure has many levels

    of management. Which is different from a

    Flat organization. Because there are so many

    different levels or management

    communication problems tend to occur. This

    also slows down the decision making.

    Advantages of Tall Structure

    The function of each layer will be clearand distinct. There will be clear lines ofresponsibility and control.

    There is a narrow span of control i.e. eachmanager has a small number ofemployees under their control. This meansthat employees can be closely supervised.

    There is a clear management structure.

    Clear progression and promotion ladder.

    Disadvantages of Tall Structure High management costs because

    managers are generally paid more thansubordinates. Each layer will tend to payits managers more money than the layerbelow it.

    The freedom and responsibility ofemployees is restricted.

    Decision making could be slowed down as

    approval may be needed by each of thelayers of authority.

    Communication has to take place throughmany layers of management.

    The flat organization model promotesemployee involvement througha decentralized decision-making process.By elevating the level of responsibility ofbaseline employees and eliminating layers

    of middle management, commentsand feedback reach all personnel involvedin decisions more quickly. Expectedresponse to customer feedback becomesmore rapid.

    Since the interaction between workers is

    more frequent, this organizationalstructure generally depends upon a muchmore personal relationship betweenworkers and managers.

    Decision are made very quickly.

    Business does not have to pay a many

    people.

    There are many operational and

    organizational advantages to having a

    flat organizational structure, including

    cost reductions, faster turnaround timefor decision making, improved

    communications and improved customer

    responsiveness that results in faster

    product delivery and increased creativity.

    DISADVANTAGE OF FLAT STRUCTURE

    Wide span of control.

    Very little chance of promotion.

    Flat organizational structures are

    designed to be organic, flexible and low

    pressure . The flat structure also makes it harder for

    ambitious employees to find satisfaction.

    Features

    Large corporations use the tall organizational

    structure. The decision-making powers all rest

    with the top management. The decision

    making and authority are all centralized and

    all the strategic functions are segregated into

    departments.

    Flat organization structure is generally

    adopted by small firms. Here the management

    trusts and respects the judgement and

    decision-making capabilities of its employees.

    organizational structure is that there is a

    clear-cut demarcation of the authority and

    responsibility diagrams in the organization.

    Every individual employee knows of all theindividuals who report to him and to whom he

    reports.

    The flat structure is very beneficial in

    completely eliminating bureaucracy and

    middlemen. Since the employees are vested

    with decision-making abilities, they tend to bemotivated and work promptly.
