Dear Sir/Madam,

The only vital value an enterprise has is the experience, skills, innovativeness and insights of its people

Professor of Intellectual Capital, University of Lund, Sweden (2002)

The topic will elaborate on different ways in which companies are performing their Human Resources Management practices and what the current trends in HRM are. The participating students will be delighted to be active and valuable players during the day.

We would like to cordially invite you to participate in the Maastricht HRM Day 2010. We will guarantee a professional high quality event and added value for all involved parties.

The HRM Day 2010 will take place on Wednesday the 21st of April 2010 in Maastricht and is organized by the HRM 2010 Committee of 3MA, the Maastricht Management/Organization and Marketing Association of Maastricht University.

This quote strongly emphasizes the importance of the employees for organizations. However, these people will not show their best skills as long as they are not motivated to do so. Moreover, the employees are representing your company and the Human Resources department is therefore constantly developing new concepts to make these people feel happy and satisfied within their organization. Since this is a difficult task of which the effects will ultimately vary between companies the MaastrichtHuman Resources Management (HRM) Day 2010 wants to put the spotlight on the best practices in HRM that companies are currently performing. Therefore, this year’s topic will be:

Enjoy your work! – Best HRM practices

3MA and Maastricht University 3MA is a study association for students of the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University. As many of these students are in the final phase of their studies, one of the central goals of 3MA is to bring the students into closer contact with business life by organizing various activities.

Our association works closely together with the departments of Marketing and Organization & Strategy of the School of Business and Economics. The Organization & Strategy department offers the master program ‘Management, Change, and Consultancy’. This program is perfectly suited to students who are interested in a career in Human Resources. In addition, students can choose to do a major in Organization during their bachelor, this program deals with the internal and ex-ternal functioning of the firm, of which Human Resources Management is obviously a big part. Another important program focusing on Hu-man Resources Development is the exclusive Management of Learning program.

Moreover, we are proud to announce that Maastricht University was chosen in 2005 as the best university of the Netherlands by both “Keuzegids Hoger Onder-wijs” and the report “Kennis in Kaart” commissioned by the Ministry of Education. In 2006, the School of Business and Economics again won first place on the Economics, Econometrics and International Business programs. The School of Business Economics and the international character of the university are some of the vital points in these quality characteristics.

Enjoy Your Work!

What do you enjoy the most about your work?

Although this might appear a rather simple question, answering it is often very difficult. Due to uncertainty and competition of the modern business life, work nowadays more than ever revolves around more than a summation of pleasurable tasks. It demands teamwork, pride, respect, fairness, trust, development opportunities and credibility. The desire for and the awareness of these factors are constantly growing among employees. Therefore, employees no longer only ask what they can do for the company, but also what the company can do for them.

Creating an enjoyable workplace is dependent on how successfully Human Resource managers can implement their practices. Employees are now valued more than they have ever been before. Therefore, the Maastricht Human Re-source Management Day 2010 will address the topic:

The difficulty of installing HRM practices lies in the complexity of relationships - between employees and management, between employees and their job and the company itself, as well as interpersonal relationships within the company. Measuring the attractiveness of a work place is however never straight forward; it includes many different factors and depends on subjective opinions of employees. What makes an attractive work place for one person does not have to be an enjoyable work place for others. Companies must therefore find a balance between having a corporate culture in which all employees can identify themselves and caring about the individual needs of its employees.

Enjoy your work! – Best HRM practices

Despite that establishing an enjoyable working environment can be regarded a time- and money consuming process and because of this many are less aware of the advantages such practices have to offer. For example, firms that have successfully adopted appropriate HRM practices generally experience an increase in employee loyalty. Employee loyalty, in turn, is linked to customer loyalty and stimulates the creativity and innovation within companies. Last, but not least, enjoyable work places attract the highest-skilled applicants.

The Human Resource Management Day 2010 is an excellent opportunity for com-panies to get in touch with the highest-skilled talents from Maastricht University. These talents are not obliged to come to the event, but choose to do so, because they are interested in more than the theories the university provides them with. Moreover, through participating in this event, your company gets the opportunity to present its HR practices and show how you successfully create a pleasurable working environment. For our students, the day is a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive practical insights into what best practices in HRM are, and how they are implemented. Additionally, awareness of best HR practices is created among the students, which helps them when entering the job market. We believe that after the HRM Day 2010 more employees will be able to say:

We enjoy our work!

Letter of RecommendationDear Sir/Madam,

On behalf of Maastricht University I fully support the invitation of the study association 3MA to participate in the organization of the Human Resource Management Day 2010. The theme for this day is ‘Enjoy your work! – Best HRM practices’ and the event will take place on April 21st, 2010. This international and innovative day is organized by 3MA in co-operation with the Organization & Strat-egy Departments of Maastricht University (School of Business and Economics).

The aim of the Maastricht Human Resource Management Day 2010 is to encourage the exchange of academic knowledge on a high level and to set up an educational event on Human Resource Management. This will be done in such a way that theory and practice will be connected. Furthermore, it will bring students and companies in closer contact. High academic quality in combination with (the encouragement of) enthusiastic students and companies, as well as the support of Maastricht University will make this 3MA’s Human Resource Management Day 2010 an inspiring and successful event.

On behalf of Maastricht University, we would like to give our recommendation for the Human Resource Management Day 2010 on ‘Enjoy your work! – Best HRM practices’. Your involvement in this event is highly appreciated.
