    Sunday Worship Themes for October

Sunday, October 6 A little faith goes a long way is our Lord’s point in the gospel. A mustard seed’s-worth has miraculous potential. The patience, tenacity, and endurance required for the life of faith are the blessings received in water and the word (holy baptism), bread and wine (holy communion), the word read and proclaimed in this assembly. Anticipate them. Receive them with thanksgiving. Psalm 37: 1-9 and Luke 17: 5-10

Sunday, October 13 It’s a miracle! Multiple miracles! The waters of holy baptism have healed us. The body and blood of Jesus in holy communion have restored us to life. We have died with Christ and been raised with him. For all this we have returned to offer thanks. From this place we are sent on our way rejoicing to share the good news. Psalm 111 and Luke 17: 11-19

Sunday, October 20 Pray always. Do not lose heart. This is the encouragement of the Christ of the gospel today. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be blessed. Wrestle with the word. Remember your baptism again and again. Come regularly to Christ’s table. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be blessed. Psalm 121 and Luke 18:1-8

Sunday, October 27 – Reformation and Confirmation Sunday – Jazz Sunday On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord’s table. Jeremiah 31:31-34, Psalm 46 and John 8:31-36

October 6th—Animal Blessing Blessing of the animals: Next Sunday we will be having a blessing of the animals, both during worship and in Peace Garden during the marathon picnic at 11:45am. Bring your pets live or stuffed for this fun celebration of all creatures! October 13th—Composting We will have a representative from the compost program out to do a Forum on the 13th. See Kari’s article regarding notes on Composting each month to keep us on our toes. October 20th—Outfront MN Faith and Equity-> OutFront MN, the largest LGBTQ+ public policy and advocacy group in Minnesota, is excited to join Christ on Capitol Hill on Oct. 20th. Join OutFront Staff, Jesus Lucero the Greater MN and Faith Coordinator, as we work together to demystifying and understand terminology, model inclusive practices, and gain a sense of what being an alley means for people of faith. October 27—Confirmation Celebration On Sunday, October 27th, three ninth graders will affirm baptismal promises and celebrate Confirmation. Abby Altman, Gabe Napierala and Leo Rhode. Come and celebrate this milestone with them today!

Musings from the Vicar of Christ on Capitol Hill

“…..To Serve all people following the example of Jesus and strive for justice and peace in all the earth.” These are promises that we make whenever we remember or affirm our baptism, and October is the month when our ninth graders are confirmed, so what better time to be reminded of some of those promises together. Since after all confirmation in essence is publically saying “yes” to the promises God makes to us in Baptism and saying yes to the promises we make in Baptism as individuals, to God, and to one another. I was reminded of this portion of those promises while I was thinking about a series of three forums that will begin this month. These forums will focus on inclusion of LGBTQ people and how we at Christ are both already welcoming to so many people in so many ways and how we can continue to walk this baptismal journey

towards an ever widening welcome to all, both inside our walls and in the world. The first forum will feature Jesus Lucero from OutFront Minnesota, the second forum will be in November, and I will tell my own story of wrestling with faith and my sexuality and share some of my own coming out story, and the third forum will be in December hopefully with Reconciling Works which is the Lutheran organization that works to make churches more inclusive. They will help us think about ways we can even more fully live into our status as an RIC congregation.

These conversations are ones that will help us grow deeper in community, learn more about each other, and help us

wade deeper into those wondrous waters of Holy Baptism, which doesn’t stop at confirmation, but is indeed a lifelong

journey. I’m filled with joy to be wading into those waters and walking that journey together during this year.

Happy Fall Everyone! September was quite a ride! In addition to a wonderful KICK OFF Party on the 21st, Shobi’s Table had lots of other great opportunities for catering, regular lunches on Rice and Sherburne, and visiting other churches to let them know what’s happening and invite them in. The ministry is going well! Right now Council is considering hosting Shobi’s inside at Christ on Capitol Hill during the cold months so we can offer a warm place to eat lunch. We’re thinking of the Gathering Space or the Reque Room. Let me know if you have any questions or ideas, and if you might be able to be one of our hosting volunteers those days (1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 11am-1pm). As I write this, we’re also preparing to take a vote on Sunday, 9/29 to sign the contract with Watson-Forsberg to begin construction on our kitchen project. Part of why the process has taken longer is due to the discussion and relocation of the Makeup Air Unit (this is the part of the ventilation system that brings in and heats the air to makeup for what was taken out). Now that this is settled, we can move forward and construction can start! We will keep you informed regarding how the process is moving along. We’re also trucking along on compost. We will have a representative from the compost program out to do a Forum on October 13th. In this newsletter article I’ll do a Note On Compost each month to keep us on our toes. This month’s Note On Compost: Wet and Dry Paper. If white or brown paper, napkins, paper plates, or paper towels are WET or FOODY, please put them in the compost. Dry, regular paper and dry paper plates (without a coating) go in recycling. Dry napkins and paper towels go in compost.

Tsereha Tafere—A Note of Tribute and Remembrance

God truly is still doing miracles! My sons refer to Tsereha as their

“other mother.” She always greeted them with outstretched arms,

with hands on their shoulders. “How are my sons doing?” She has

impacted our lives as family with loving, caring and understanding.

Tsereha will remain in our lives and hearts forever! You will be

missed, but we understand you are with God in his kingdom.

    Love,

    Carol, Eric and Craig

    Dokken

Since last All Saints’ Sunday, we have lost these beloved saints...

Ruth Bengtson—Ruth didn't bother with negativity. She lived in any Goodness around her and because of that, she saw the Goodness around her. In what may have been perceived as dire circumstances, she was grateful for the smallest of things. Ruth was warm, loving, caring and fun. She treasured her friends so much, they became family. Once a friend, you were friends for life and she wasn't about to let you go. - Kathy Kolstad

Shirley Marie Brekke—Loved to leave beauty behind her wherever she went

Thank You by John Knutson, written in honor of Carolyn Knutson To the one who raised us, to the one who slaved and sacrificed, To the one who nursed us and held us so tight. The memories you made us with a lifetime of love To the one who praised us, perhaps too much. You stayed up all night to heal whatever ailed us, In the morning, you could bake with a smile. To the one who raised us, to the one who saved us, We lift up our hearts to you. So we say Thank You, Thank You, Thank You Mom.

Remembrance of Lieng Chao Tann (Gong) (Grandpa)

This is my remembrance of Gong. The GOAT in my book (Greatest of All Time) He was a very stubborn man for many that don’t know, but many people know him for being cute and joyful and that was exactly how he was as well.

He was a person to put people at ease especially myself with his presence which I took for granted as he would smile and have no teeth which brought many smiles and joy to people’s lives. When we would ever have food together, I would smile showing my teeth to signal him when he couldn’t hear me to make sure he had his teeth in and would smile if he had them in or not. He was the number one reason that brought family to the table.

I will always remember that my mother and I would boss him around sometimes just to get him to drink water. Since there was nobody to boss him around and he was the head honcho we bossed him around anyways. I remember a time when I told him he shouldn’t eat too many chips and he would get fat, but he told me he didn’t care they taste good.

Gong had well known phrases as saying, “Thank you” for every answer whether it made sense or not. An example would be someone would say good morning to him and he’d respond “Thank you thank you”. Or if Someone said thank you to him, he would respond with thank you back. Another phrase would be “No problem” for times where the situation was either difficult or easy. He probably wouldn’t even comprehend a situation and still say “No Problem”.

There are definitely more stories to tell, but these are what come to my mind instantly and a few more that I would like to share, but keeping it short knowing I am unable to share my whole life with Gong within a remembrance.

Gong was been a big part of my daily life and was the strongest person I know. He has help me become the person I am today. I am blessed and proud to be a grandson of Gong. I’ll be taking all the life lessons and wonderful memories that we got to share together forever and ever. Also continuing to share your joy with the world. You’ll be forever loved. —Your Grandson Pong

September Council Summary Greetings, The church council had their first meeting of the fall on Monday, September 16th. We welcomed Jade Christianson to council and appointed her to serve as council's youth representative for the remainder of the church year. The council also recommended language for the kitchen project, to be voted on at the special congregational meeting on Sunday September 29th, approved the Stewardship for All Seasons team's concept for the coming 2020 year, and gave the go ahead for the redesign of the church website.

For October, the finance and exec team will meet on Thursday, October 10th. We have also called an All Committee Night for Wednesday, October 16th, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. All members of congregational committees and teams are invited to attend. Council will also conduct any necessary October business on the 16th, either during or immediately following the All Committee meeting. Thank you. Erik Wohlrabe Council President

    Notes from Natalia

    The Welcome Table

We made significant commitments to the Welcome Table Capital Campaign in 2018 and many have already generously shared their funds, so we want to give you an update on the progress of the campaign. In Fall 2018, we received commitments for $248,000. So far, we have already received $174,219 of the $300,000 goal. To reach our goal, we are still accepting new commitments and gratefully receiving gifts over the next two and a half years.

To pay for the complete kitchen project, we are still holding $85,000 from the bequest and are in process to receive a $20,000 grant in 2019 from the City of Saint Paul. So, we have $259,219 "in hand" as income on this project. Keep in mind that an ad-ditional $100,000 will fund the Kitchen Coordinator position, essential to this project's success. In addition, due to the nature of construction projects, we know that costs are going to be higher than originally anticipated. There is much to celebrate as we move toward construction, meet additional challenges, and continue fulfilling this vision of The Welcome Table.

Hello all music lovers at Christ on Capitol Hill! We've started our choir season with much enthusiasm and invite anyone who can come on Wednesdays to rehearse with the choir. If your schedule doesn't allow you to attend on Wednesdays and you can read music, we always rehearse at 8:45 on the Sundays choir is singing, which is usually the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of the month from September through May. My focus for this season is to incorporate multicultural music as well as adding percussion and oth-er instruments. If you have a special talent in playing a band or orchestra instrument, we'd love for you to be a part of music worship on occasion. Most Wednesdays I am in the building for our weekly Staff meeting. Afterward I'll be checking the pews in the Sanctuary to see what needs tidying up - hymnals with the Cambodian Lord's Prayer in the back cover, enough hymnals distributed, sharpened pencils, paper, and any other items needed in the pews. Carolyn Knutson took on this responsibility in the past. If anyone would like to help me carry out this task, please email me at [email protected]. – Natalia Peterson

Cherish All Children training with Christ Youth Beginning the end of September, we will welcome Monica Jones, Youth Program Coordinator of Cherish All Children, to join with our high school youth for a series on healthy, safe relationships. Using youth-focused, interactive curriculum Not a Number, Monica will facilitate this 5-module prevention education. Not a Number is designed to teach youth information and skills, inspiring them to make safe choices when they encounter potentially exploitative situations and utilize healthy support systems to decrease their vulnerability. We believe the church is a safe place to talk about these things and the church can play a significant role to edu-cate youth in making safe/healthy choices. The curriculum is presented in a dynamic and interactive way that sparks healthy discussions, challenges the ways culture and society contribute to exploitation, dating abuse, and sexual violence, including the pressures of social media and gaming culture. During the discussion, there may be some explicit language used (primarily during the discussion of cultural norms). Students are encouraged to reflect upon the language/terms they use and listen to and to challenge negative societal and media stereotypes. The program also encourages youth to share what they have learned with their peers. We hope you will encourage your youth to participate, and we also would love to share an overview with parents and other adults. Reach out to Joy McElroy at 651-207-3357 for more information!
