GOALS

Summit Goals:

• To increase understanding of the HPV disease burden

• To bring together providers who vaccinate with providers who treat HPV-related cancers

• To highlight current early detection and screening guidelines as well as recommendations for HPV-related cancers that have such tests

• To present and discuss the most current research on different HPV-related cancers and treatments, as well as innovative projects and strategies to reduce HPV-related cancer

Kate Weissman is a three-year stage 2B cervical cancer survivor. After her battle with cancer, Kate became an avid advocate for the cancer community. She serves as a Legislative Ambassador for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, a Champion for the Alliance for Proton Therapy Access, and an Ambassador for Cervivor - an organization dedicated to educating people about HPV and cervical cancer. Kate is the Vice President of Integrated Project Management for Weber Shandwick, a public relations agency in Boston. She lives in Charlestown with her incredible husband and their fur baby.

Speakers

Alessandro Villa, DDS, MPH, PhD is an associate surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He also holds an appointment as an Assistant Professor in oral medicine at Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he serves as the Program Director for the Oral Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Villa studied dental medicine at the University of Milano, and obtained a PhD from the University of Sassari, Italy. He obtained his Master of Public Health from AT Still University, MO and completed a residency in oral medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard School of Dental Medicine and a post-doctoral fellowship in cancer epidemiology and genetics at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD.

Rebecca Perkins, MD, MSc is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston University School of Medicine, and a practicing gynecologist at Boston Medical Center. Her career is dedicated to reducing health disparities in cervical cancer. Her current research focuses on improving utilization of HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening guidelines. Dr. Perkins is currently working on national projects related to HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention with the American Cancer Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, and ASCCP.

Melissa Gallagher is a 46 year old stay at home mom who lives in Needham with her husband and 3 children ages 13, 12 and 9. She was diagnosed with HPV-related cancer in her throat in February of 2018 and received treatment through Mass Eye and Ear, as well as Newton Wellesley, to remove the cancer and prevent any further spread of the disease. She is passionate about educating parents and professionals about what can be done to prevent HPV-related cancer from happening to anyone else.

Nancy Peña, OPN-CG, CMI, BS is a Patient Navigator at Dana-Farber and Brigham Women’s Cancer Center where she supports patients and develops protocols to engage patients to have direct access to their health care. She is Founder and Director of International Patient Navigation, an organization supporting low-income patient health in Guatemala. And she is the producer and director of Colores Latinos, a local and online Spanish TV show to engage and educate the Hispanic community on health, education, and cultural topics; it broadcasts on 32 local channels in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Boston.

Eileen Lind, MSN, RN, CPNP practices in the pediatric oncology clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and has worked with DFCI’s Community Benefits Office to initiate programs that engage multiple stakeholders to increase HPV vaccination rates, and reduce HPV-related cancers. She works to prevent cervical cancer nationwide through the non-profit organization, Team Maureen, which she founded in memory of her sister, Maureen Russo, who passed away at the age of 37 from cervical cancer. She serves as patient advocate on the ASCCP Screening Guidelines workgroup, and is a member of the HPV National Roundtable.

Nathan Mork, DDS, MPH is the Deputy Chief Dental Officer at White Earth Health Center in Ogema, MN and serves as the IHS National Dental Public Health Consultant as well as the Co-Consultant of the IHS Oral Health Promotion/Disease Prevention Program. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry in 2004 and completed a Hospital-based General Practice Residency in 2005 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. He obtained a Master of Public Health from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2011 and completed a Dental Public Health Residency at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Oral Health, in Atlanta, GA in 2013. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health. Elizabeth Kostas-Polston, PhD, APRN, WHNP-BC is an Assistant Professor of Nursing and Researcher, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar Alumna, a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner, and a member of the American Cancer Society/CDC’s National HPV Vaccination Roundtable. Elizabeth’s innovative scholarship is focused on assuring the effective translation of knowledge for new approaches related to health promotion, disease prevention, and the diagnosis, treatment, and management of HPV-related cancers. Her research goals include developing tools for the detection of persistent HPV infection of the oropharynx as well as identifying strategies that may be used to inhibit the oncogenic activity of high-risk HPV genotypes.

Sarah Feldman, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School where she is co-Director of Ambulatory Gynecologic Oncology and Director of the Center for Pre-Invasive Disease of the Lower Genital Tract at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Feldman oversees multiple research projects on cervical cancer prevention, including studies evaluating effective approaches to cervical cancer screening and management, in particular assessing the impact of recent guidelines and changes in care and their impact on cervical cancer prevalence.

Courtney Riley, MD is a primary care pediatrician at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, VT. She received her medical degree from New York Medical College in 2013 and completed her residency at the University of Vermont in 2016. During her time at Gifford Medical Center, Dr. Riley and her team have been awarded the Vermont’s 2018 “HPV Vaccine is Cancer Prevention Champion” in recognition of their outstanding efforts to protect adolescents from cancers caused by HPV. The award is bestowed by the CDC, the American Cancer Society, and the Association of American Cancer Institutes to practices that go above and beyond to foster HPV vaccination in their community. Gifford Pediatrics is one of a select group to receive this award nationally.
