Happy April! I hope many of you were able to enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating Spring Break, and are ready for the “final stretch”, as Dr. Marty had referenced the final 45 days in his recent Payday Notes. While many of you rejuvenated yourselves by taking a trip or spending time at home with family members, some of our department staff took advantage of the week off to attend the SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Education) America Conference in Seattle. Three Parkway HPE teachers (Chuck Sachs, Amy Sydnor, and Michelle Dempsey) and myself, spent three days in Seattle attending conference sessions throughout the day, as well as sight-seeing and socializing in the evening. One of our favorite sites to see, was the Pike Place Fish Market , known for their fish tossing and quality service. The Fish! Philosophy - Be There, Play, Make Their Day, and Choose Your Attitude - is a foundation for the employee’s daily practices and it shows. Sad to say, one of our other favorite sites to visit was the location of the first Starbuck’s coffee store (1st & Pike ), still open for business since 1971. The Starbuck mission “To Inspire and Nuture the Human Spirit - one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time”, as well as their values, were very visible not only in writing, but also in practice. Both Starbucks and Pike Place, had us thinking, “Does our philosophy and mission drive our daily practice in the Parkway Health and Physical Education Department? How much pride and fun do we have in our daily work? What practices do we display regularly and consistently that promote a high quality product and demonstrate to our clients (the Parkway students) that we care about and appreciate their business?” The SHAPE Conference was definitely the perfect place for further reflection on these questions. The three days were packed with sessions that presented research and instructional practices that spoke to our professional beliefs and best practices. Most notably were the references made to two of the most recently released publications - The Essential Components of Physical Education and Appropriate Practices for School-Based Health Education . These documents, along with other documents, such as the Appropriate Practice Guidelines for Physical Education , HYP CALENDAR April 1 Late Start PLC Day 8 GYM Team Meeting (4:30p) 9 HPE CAT Meeting (4:30p) 1-17 Fitness Testing Window (Elem/MS) May 1-7 National PE & Sport Week 3 Let’s Move in Parkway June Curriculum Development July 15 - PE Workshop 22 - Health Workshop

provide us with quality assurance in the HPE profession. Together with the Parkway School District’s Mission, as well as our Parkway HPE Vision “Healthy Active Students, Ready to Work, Learn, Play, and Care”, we should have plenty of direction for our daily practice - but do we actually know these practices and use them on a daily basis and would our stakeholders recognize them?

Article of the MonthTapping into a student’s prior knowledge is important to engaging students in the learning process. But, what do you do when a child has no prior knowledge with popular American games? Many times English Language Learners (ELL) come to us with no knowledge of traditional American sports (e.g., rules, common expressions). An article printed in the March edition of JOPERD, Integrating Best Practices in ELL Classrooms with Physical Education Instruction, is a good read for identifying ways to modify instruction and assessment for students with limited English proficiency.

At the SHAPE America General Sessions, I had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Kenneth Cooper (“Father of Aerobics”) and Dr. John Medina (Human brain development expert and author of “Brain Rules”). Both leading experts in their field, spoke to the importance of exercise and the brain. Medina referenced his research with the physical activity’s impact on the Executive Function (EF) center of the brain, which assists with impulse control. Medina highlighted that children who have better impulse control score 210 points higher on the SAT, adding that aerobic exercise enhanced the EF. Medina stated, “Aerobic exercise improves EF of the brain. When aerobic exercise is halted, EF decreases.” Dr. Cooper, reinforced the importance of aerobic exercise to the overall health of our society, significantly reducing cardiovascular disease and cancer. Cooper also pointed out the correlation between increased student fitness and success in school. It was truly inspiring to hear from medical experts about the value and contribution of physical education programs to the growth and development of our youth.

As I conclude, in the final months of the 2014-15 school year, I hope everyone will have a chance to reflect upon the 2014-15 school year, celebrate their successes and set goals for program improvements in 2015-16. As part of your plan for improving the quality of health and physical education at your school, I strongly advise that you become more familiar with our guiding documents and take advantage of professional development opportunities. Parkway offers some of the best summer development around. A special thanks to Amy, Chuck, and Michelle, who actually committed to PD during their spring break. Parkway is offering a wide variety of workshops this summer for certified staff professional growth opportunities. The summer opportunities are an excellent way for you to begin your Professional Learning Plan for 2015-16. Remember that Parkway requires its teachers to earn 3 credits every 3 years. Most of these summer course can be taken for credit or pay, but you must choose one or the other. The are many courses just for HPE teachers and many others offered across content areas. See the suggested courses below for HPE teachers, or see the recent email from Liz Morrison, Director of Professional Learning, for the complete summer course guide. Enroll for these courses on PEERS now as limited spots are available.

The 8th annual Let’s Move in Parkway event is scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Creve Coeur Park. We hope all Parkway HPE teachers are able to join us and commit to working one of the shifts (11:30a-1:30p or 1:30-3:30p). We also need many other staff, parents, and students as event volunteers. For more information about LMIP 2015 and sign up as a volunteer, go to the event website at www.tinyurl.com/LMIP2015

Please help us promote LMIP 2015 at your school by posting signs and information around your school and in your school newsletter. Posters and signs will be delivered soon. The best thing you can do is promote it in your physical education classes and challenge your students in some way to attend, volunteer, and/or participate.
