Introduction 1-3

qsF00_en.book Page 4 Monday, June 26, 2000 3:15 PM

Network Printing BasicsNetworks consist of computers connected together to share information and resources, such as printers. On a “client-server” network, client computers send print jobs to dedicated server computers that control the use of each printer. On a “peer-to-peer” network, dedicated servers are not used. Instead, each computer is configured to send print jobs to the printer directly.

1Network Printing Configurations

Client-server printing is typically used in medium to large networks where dedicated servers are used to manage printing needs of many users. Client-server networks use network operating systems (NOS) such as Novell NetWare and Microsoft Windows NT/2000 Server.

Peer-to-peer printing is more suitable for smaller networks. On peer-to-peer networks, users configure their Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000 systems to print directly to the printer. Note that peer-to-peer printing can be configured on a client-server network. For example, a small workgroup might use peer-to-peer printing even though it is connected to an enterprise-wide client-server network.

Regardless of the network type (client-server or peer-to-peer), your computers and printers must use a common language, or “network protocol” to communicate with each other. The most common protocols are IPX (Internet Packet Exchange), made popular by Novell NetWare networks, and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), made popular by the Internet. The HP JetDirect print server supports these and other popular network protocols.

Installing 600N (EIO) Internal Print Servers

IntroductionThe HP JetDirect 600N family of internal print servers are network interface cards for HP Enhanced I/O (EIO) printers, multifunction peripherals (MFPs), and other peripherals. With an HP JetDirect print server, you can connect and share your printer anywhere on your network and print at network speeds.

A typical network using an HP JetDirect 600N print server is illustrated below. The card must first be installed into the printer and connected to the network. Then, you must configure the card for network operation.

qsF00_en.book Page 2 Monday, June 26, 2000 3:15 PM

CAUTION HP JetDirect cards contain electronic components that can be damaged by static electricity through electrostatic discharge (ESD). To prevent ESD damage, maintain frequent contact with any bare sheet metal surface on the printer. A grounding wrist strap (or similar device) is useful for this purpose. Handle the card carefully at all times. Avoid touching electronic components or circuit paths.

Installation Procedures1. Identify Your HP JetDirect 600N Internal Print Server.

Remove the HP JetDirect card from its packaging and verify that you have the correct card for your network.

2. If Necessary, Set Switches or Jumpers on Your Card.

HP J3113A for Fast Ethernet (10/100Base-TX) networks

Provides an RJ-45 connector (unshielded twisted-pair cable). For 100Base-TX, use Category 5 cable.

If You Have a Token Ring Card (J3112A)

Token Ring networks operate at 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps. You must set the Data Rate switch on the card to either 4 or 16, depending on your network. If you don’t know, ask your network administrator. The factory default setting is 16 Mbps.

If You Have a 10/100Base-TX Card (J3113A)

The 10/100TX card is preconfigured for Auto-negotiation (jumper P1), which means the card will automatically attempt to connect to your network using the proper speed (10 or 100 Mbps) and duplex mode (Full or Half). In most cases, you do not need to change the jumper settings. Refer to “HP J3113A 10/100Base-TX Card” in this chapter for more information.

2Jumpers

The HP JetDirect 600N 10/100Base-TX card has configuration jumpers that should be used only if the print server fails to link on the network. The factory-default setting (P1 = Auto) will suit most installations.

When P1 is set to Auto, the other two jumper settings are ignored; the print server auto-negotiates the link speed and duplex setting with the connected switch or hub device. Even with devices that don’t auto-negotiate, the print server detects the network link speed and uses half duplex.

If the print server fails to link, you can manually configure the print server by positioning the jumpers as shown below, only if you are certain of the duplex setting and speed at which the switch or hub is operating.

Link setting is auto-negotiated (default)

Link setting is 100Base-TX Half-Duplex

Link setting is 100Base-TX Full-Duplex

Link setting is 10Base-T Half-Duplex

Link setting is 10Base-T Full-Duplex

8. Plug the power module into the wall outlet . Since there is no power switch, the print server is switched on after you plug it in.

9. Check the LEDs on the front of print server. The Status LED should be green (steady or blinking).

If the internal self-test failed, the Activity LED will be on and the Status LED will be off. For troubleshooting information, see the HP JetDirect Print Servers Administrator’s Guide on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM.

10. Wait about 10 seconds. For 10Base-T and 100Base-TX networks, check the 10 and 100 LEDs to verify that the correct one is lit (see page 3-5).

Verifying the Hardware Installation

To verify the installation of the HP JetDirect external printer server, generate a configuration page. This page is generated from Port 1 of the printer server.

To generate a configuration page, follow these steps:

1. Print a JetDirect configuration page by pressing and releasing the Test button on the print server.

2. If the configuration page displays the message I/O CARD READY, you have successfully completed the hardware installation. (If not, see the Troubleshooting chapter in the HP JetDirect Print Servers Administrator’s Guide shipped on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM.)

Refer to this configuration page when configuring the software. For sample configuration pages, see the Troubleshooting chapter in the HP JetDirect Print Servers Administrator’s Guide on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM.

Selecting a Configuration Page Language

The configuration page for the HP JetDirect external print server is sent to the printer attached to Port 1. The printer language is auto-detected the first time the print server is powered up and after each cold reset.

If you want to change the detected printer language, use the LEDs and Test button to select a PDL for the configuration page. When you hold down the Test button for three seconds, the LEDs begin to cycle through four configurations, as outlined in the following table.

Release the Test button when you get the right PDLs (Page Description Language), and the configuration page will be printed.

For PDL... The Status LED is... The Activity LED is...

On the back of the HP JetDirect 300X (J3263) and 500X (J3265) Print Servers, there are LEDs that indicate the operating speed (10Mbps or 100Mbps) (Figure 3-3). (This only applies to 10Base-T and 100Base-TX networks.)

Servers

3Switches (HP JetDirect 300X and 500X)The HP JetDirect 300Xand 500X Print Servers have configuration switches that should be used only if the print server fails to link on the network. The factory-default setting of all 3 switches down will suit most installations. These switches only apply to 10Base-T and 100Base-TX networks only.

When the first switch is set to Auto, the other two switch settings are ignored; the server auto-negotiates the link speed and duplex setting with the connected switch or hub device. Even with devices that don’t auto-negotiate, the print server detects the network link speed and uses half duplex.

Although usually unnecessary, you can control the settings directly by positioning the switches as shown in the table below, only if you are certain of the duplex setting and speed at which the switch or hub is operating.

Note In Auto mode, you can see the network speed by checking the LEDs at the RJ-45 connector (see page 3-5).

If the auto switch is set to...

And if the speed switch is set to...

And if the duplex switch is set to...

Then the settings are...

AUTO (down) either position (default=down)

either position (default=down)

Auto-negotiated (factory default)

MANUAL (up) 10 (up) HALF (down) 10Base-T Half-duplex

MANUAL (up) 100 (down) HALF (down) 100Base-TX Half-duplex

Resetting to Factory DefaultsOnce you configure your print server, the configuration settings are retained in memory unless you manually reset them to factory defaults.

(The firmware is not affected when you reset the configuration settings.)

To reset the print server to factory defaults, follow these steps:

1. Unplug the power cord from the print server.

2. While holding down the Test button on the print server, plug the power module into the print server and continue to hold down the Test button for about five seconds. Any user-configured settings will be erased.
