    Chapter 1. Introduction and Overview

What Is the Purpose of this Guide?

This HP DesignJet Printing Guide for Macintosh gives you information about:

    • Installing your printer driver

    • Selecting and configuring your printer in the Chooser

    • Selecting a PostScript Printer Description for your printer, if necessary

    • Using your printer

    • Troubleshooting printing problems

I Have an HP DesignJet. Why Do I Have an AdobePS Driver?

The AdobePS driver can be used with several printers of the HP DesignJet series. Furthermore, using the AdobePS driver along with the correct PPD files ensures document portability across your Hewlett-Packard printers and saves space on your hard disk by requiring only one driver.

    What About QuickDraw GX?

QuickDraw GX has been discontinued by Apple Computer and is no longer supported by Hewlett-Packard.

How Do I Access the Online Information?

When you have installed the driver, and if the HP DesignJet is your currently selected printer, you will see the online guide for the HP DesignJet driver listed in the “Apple” menu. If you select it, the opening window of the guide will bdisplayed on your screen. By following the instructions in this opening windyou will be able to see topics describing the driver’s features and options.

What Can the Driver Help Me To Do?

The driver for your HP DesignJet 3500CP printer contains a powerful set of features that allow you to make the best use of its printing capabilities. The following list highlights the driver’s major features:

    • Autoscale your drawing to fit a different page size.

    • Make your own custom page size.

    • Print colors emulating SWOP, Euroscale, and Toyo color standards. Alternatively, you can explore the printer’s full color range with the No ColAdjustment, Enhanced Native, and ColorSmart options.

    • Adjust color matching by selecting Rendering Intent.

    • Request information on ink level status.

    • Check the printer’s current print medium.

    • Check the printer’s current ink type (dye-based or durable).

    • Rotate your drawing to avoid wasting paper.

    • Use Apple ColorSync 2.0. For background information, visit the Apple Web site (http://www.apple.com) and use Find It to find information on ColorSync.

    • Print multiple copies while processing your image only once.

Information that will help you to use these features is contained in the online guide; see the previous section for instructions on how to access it.

Chapter 3. Setting Up the Driver

After installing the driver (see Chapter 2), you must use the Chooser to select the driver, select the printer, and configure the driver to make best use of your printer’s features.

You may already know how to use the Chooser; however, there are additiosteps to follow in order to set up your printer. Therefore, please read this echapter before starting the Chooser.

    Identifying your Printer

In order to print to a specific printer, you will need to know the printer’s AppleTalk name, and which zone it’s in (if your network has zones). You mbe able to get this information easily from a colleague or from your networadministrator.

Alternatively, if you have access to the printer, you can interrogate it directlyusing the front panel controls:

    1. If the printer is off, turn it on. Wait for the front panel to announce that thprinter is ready. You may have to perform operations such as checking loading the paper. Consult your printer manual if necessary.

    2. Press the Enter button to enter the menu system. Consult your printer mif you have difficulty with the menu system.

    3. Select the Utilities menu, and ensure that Menu Mode is set to Full.

    4. From the Utilities menu, select the Service Tests submenu, then select Service Print.

    5. The printer will print a page of information. At the bottom left of the pagethe APPLETALK NAME of your printer, and the ETALK ZONE (which maybe an asterisk if there are no zones).

You can use the HP LaserJet Utility to give your own choice of name to theprinter in place of the default name.

    Chapter 5. Using the Driver

When using the AdobePS driver, you should be aware of the following consid-erations:

    • The driver allows some printers to print using a larger imageable print area on the page. If your documents were originally formatted for such a printer, you may find that text in some documents reflows or is clipped to fit the new imageable area.

    • Printing multiple documents with the Finder may not work if the documents have been created by different application programs.

    • With some graphics applications, the cover page may not be printed at the end of a multi-page document. If this is the case, select the Before Document cover page option.

Using the Driver with Popular Application Programs

Some applications do not yet take advantage of the driver’s features, or thhave small incompatibilities that result in printing problems. If you experienproblems with a program, contact the publisher of the program. In some caa newer version of the program may be available that will resolve your prolems.

Some information that is specific to certain applications is contained in a dment that came with your printer. The applications that it details are listed ofront page.

    Using the Driver with Spoolers

    • If a Novell spooler rejects a printing connection due to insufficient user privileges (queue security option turned on) or an internal error, the driver may hang indefinitely.

    • Netware 3.11 may cause the driver to download fonts more often than necessary, resulting in poor printing performance.

    • Versions of Netware prior to 4.0 do not support the driver’s Auto Setup

capability. In these environments, manually select the appropriate PPD for your printer (see Chapter 4).

    Chapter 7. Working with Color

    The Driver’s Color Features

Your HP DesignJet 3500CP PostScript driver contains a rich set of features to help you to manage your printed colors.

The online guide for the driver describes the use of these features. This chapter summarizes the recommended settings.

    Setting the Color Options

In most cases you are recommended to use the following set of options:

    Print: PostScript Color Matching (default)

    Printer Profile: Printer Default (default)

    Color Matching System: Enhanced Native

    Lightness: 0% No Change (default)

    Print Mode: Photographic Quality (default)

These settings have been chosen to help you get the “best results” from your HP DesignJet 3500CP, giving a balance between choice of color gamut, color space, color contrast, ink volume, and data processing time.

Note about Ink Volume with No Color Adjustment

Controlling the ink volume is an important factor in determining print quality. If the ink volume is not properly controlled, you could experience ink saturation of your print medium, leading to “cockle” and other unpredictable results. The driver will normally control the ink volume so as to avoid such problems, but if you select No Color Adjustment this control is disabled. For most users, Enhanced Native is preferable, because in that mode the driver retains control over ink volume, and you should not experience problems.

    Chapter 8. Working with Fonts

    Printing Fonts

In your application you can select any font that is in your System Folder’s ‘Fonts’ folder. To see that font on-screen you need only its bitmap representation. In order to print a font on your HP DesignJet 3500CP you hseveral options:

    • Resident fonts – If you use a resident font (a font that is in the printer’s ROMthere is no need for the host to send its PostScript description, because printer has it already.

    • Downloaded fonts in the printer – If you have the outlined representation (either PostScript or TrueType) of a font in your Macintosh, you can downloit to the printer’s RAM or hard disk. The font is then equivalent to a residfont. PostScript font definitions will remain on the hard disk after powerinoff, while those in RAM will be lost.

    • Fonts downloaded in the PostScript job – If you try to print a font that is neither resident in the printer nor previously downloaded to it, the driver downloads it at print time and releases it after the job is finished. If the outlined version of the font is present in the System Folder, it will be the downloaded. The driver will download a bitmap representation of the fononly if it is the only representation of the font available; pixelation will resuwhen it is scaled.

If you send many different fonts in the PostScript job, you may run out of memory in the printer. To avoid this situation you can either download fontprior to printing, or you can use the ‘Unlimited Downloadable Fonts in a Document’ option available in the ‘Page Setup > Options’ dialog box. The efof this option is that each font is downloaded whenever it is used, which tatime but means that the printer does not have to store more than one font time.

If your document uses PostScript fonts that are in your computer but not inprinter, your driver will send the PostScript font definition at print time as pof the PostScript file to be printed. The PostScript font definition is flushed fryour printer’s memory when printing ends.

    TrueType Fonts

You can use TrueType fonts with your printer.

    Screen Fonts

When you create a document, the text characters you see on your screen screen fonts. They allow you to see what your document will look like wheprinted (WYSIWYG = “What You See Is What You Get”).

Screen fonts to match the 136 PostScript printer fonts are provided on theDesignJet 2500CP/3500CP CD-ROM, but are not automatically installed oyour system, because they take up a significant amount of hard disk spacecan install them if you wish.

If a screen font does not have a corresponding PostScript font in the printedownloadable to the printer, the driver will send a bitmap version of that fonthe printer. The quality of the bitmap font may be poor if you use scaling. Fbetter results in this case, you may wish to substitute a font of which you haPostScript version in your computer or printer.

    Adobe Type Manager

Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is a utility that uses information in a PostScript Type 1 font to scale the corresponding screen font to whatever size you require. When you use ATM, you conserve disk space as you don’t have to install numerous bitmap screen fonts on your system. Additionally, the characterscreated by ATM are of high quality. ATM works with PostScript Type 1 fontonly.

The ATM utility can be purchased separately for use with the AdobePS dri

    Troubleshooting Information

The scale factor I set in the Page Setup dialog box has no effect when I print

Problem: Your application does not allow you to print to the paper size you want to use, so you use a scale setting to create the desired size.

Solution: The scale setting in the Page Setup dialog box belongs to the driver and will, in most cases, allow you to increase the size of the image you have in your application. However, not all applications behave in the same way and your application may overide the effect of the driver’s scale setting. The solutionto use the printer’s front panel scaling feature. This feature is described in printer’s documentation covering Page Format options.

I can’t find the AdobePS icon in the Chooser

Problem: The printer driver’s icon does not appear in the Chooser.

Solution: Ensure that you have only one System Folder on your Macintosh reinstall the printer driver (using the HP DesignJet 2500CP/3500CP CD-RO

I can’t find the printer name in the Chooser

Problem: Your printer’s name does not appear in the list of printer names inChooser.

    Solution:

    • Make sure your printer is on and in the “Ready” state.

    • Make sure all cables and connector boxes are firmly connected.

    • Make sure all connector boxes are properly terminated.

    • Make sure that AppleTalk is on (the button next to Active is highlighted in the Chooser).

    • If the printer resides on a network with multiple zones, make sure the correct zone is selected from the AppleTalk Zones box in the Chooser.

    • If the printer is connected directly to the Macintosh by a network, you may need a crossover cable.

    • Make sure the printer has not been renamed since it last appeared in the

Chooser. Check the name of the printer as described in Chapter 3.

    • Make sure you first selected the AdobePS printer driver icon in the Chooser.

    • Make sure the printer’s front panel is set to either:

    “Lang = PostScript” or

    “Lang = Automatic”.

My document didn’t print to the intended printer

Problem: You sent your document to the printer, but when you went to retrieve it, it wasn’t in the output tray.

Solution: Choose one of the following solutions depending on your systemconfiguration:

    • Check the selected printer name in the Chooser.

    • Check the PrintMonitor application to see if an error occurred during printing.

I can’t use my Macintosh while a printer status message is on the screen

Problem: After you sent your print job to the printer, a printer status message appeared on your screen. The message stayed on your screen until your document finished printing. You couldn’t continue your work until after youdocument printed.

Solution: Turn Background Printing On in the Chooser (see Chapter 3). Wbackground printing is off and you send a print job to the printer, the printestatus message will stay on your screen until your document has completeprinting. You can’t continue your work until the message clears. With background printing on, the message is redirected to the PrintMonitor and you continue working while the printer is printing your job.

My EPS file doesn’t print with the correct fonts

Problem: You created an EPS file and then saved it. However, your application isn’t downloading the fonts included in that EPS file to the printer.

Solution: This is a problem that occurs with only some applications. Try dowloading the fonts contained in the EPS file before printing the saved EPS f

The colors on the printed output don’t match the colors on my screen

Problem: When the printer receives a color file, it goes through an adjustment

process to try to match the color on the printed output to the color on the computer screen. Sometimes the printer cannot match the colors as closely as you would like.

    Solutions:

    • Ensure you are using PostScript Color Matching and Printer Default in the Print pop-up menu in the Print Options dialog box. The printer will make adjust-ments to match the colors.

    • Check your Print Setup dialog box to make sure all settings are adjusted correctly.

Each time I switch on my Macintosh I see the “Important! To complete the installation of the HP DesignJet printing …” message

Problem: When you restarted your Macintosh after installing the printer driver from the HP DesignJet 2500CP/3500CP CD-ROM, you saw a message that reminded you to complete the installation of the HP DesignJet printing software. When you clicked on OK, this message should have deposited itself in your “Trash” container, but for some reason this has not happened. Maybe the message file was already there and a duplicate file could not be deposited Trash.

Solution: Open the Startup folder in your System folder, drag the DesignJet Cleanup file to the Trash, then empty the Trash.

My application doesn’t support a page width of 54 inches

Problem: The maximum page size supported by your application may be smaller than the maximum page size of the printer.

Solution: In your application, choose a page size that it will accept, and rescale the page to the required size using the printer driver. When you come to print, choose Printer Specific Options, Scale to, and select a page length greater than or equal to the final length you require. Scaling will preserve the aspect ratio of your image. To eliminate white space at the top and bottom of the print, use the printer’s front panel to choose Page Format, Size, Inked Area.
