The following gensral safety prscautions must be obssrvad during a ll phnsss of operation, ssrwice , and rspair of thisinstrument. Failure to comply with these precautions or with specifi c warnings elsewhere in this manual violatesSafety standards of design, manufacture, and intended usa nf ths instrument Hewlett-Packard Company assumtis noliabil ity for the custom&s failure to comply with thsse requirements; This is B Ssfsty Class 1 instrument.GROUND THE INSTRUMENTTo minimize shock hazard, the instrument chass is and cabinet must be connected to an elec-trical ground. The instrument is equipped with a three-conductor ac power cable. The powercable must either be plugged into an approved three-contact electrical outlet or used with athree-contact to two-contact adapter with the grounding wire (green) firmly connected to analactrical ground (safety ground) at the power outlet. The power jack and mating plug of thepower cable meet International Electro technica l Commission (IECI safety standards.DO NOT OPERATE IN AN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHEREDo not operate the instrument in the presence of flammable gases or fumes. Operation of anyelectrical instrument in such an environment constitutes a definite safety hazard.KEE P AWA Y FROM LIVE CIRCUITSOperating personnel must not remove instrument covers. Component replacement and internaladjustments must be made by qualified maintenance personnel. Do not replace componentswith power cable connected. Under certain conditions, dangerous voltages may exist even withthe power cable removed. To avoid injur ies, always disconnect power and discharge circuitsbefore touching them.DO NOT SERVfCE OR ADJUST ALONEDo not attempt internal service or adjustment unless another person, capable of rendering firs taid and resuscitat ion, is present.DO HOT SUBSTITUTE PARTS OR MODIFY INSTRUMENTBecausa of the danger of introducing additional hazards, do not insta ll substitute parts or per-form any unauthorized modification to the instrument. Return the instrument to a Hewlett-Packard Sales and Service Office for service and repair to ensure that safety features are main-tained.OAMEROUS PROCEDUREWARNINGSWarnings, such as tha example below, precede potentially dangerous procedures throughoutthis manual. Instructions contained in the warnings must be followed,
piGi-Oangerous voltages, capable of causing death, are present in this instrument, Use BX.treme caution when handling, testing, and adjusting.

SAFETYSYMBOLSGeneralDefinitions of Safety Symbols Used On Equipment or In Manuals.
AInstruction manual symbol: the product will be marked with thissymbol when it is necessary or the user to refer to the instructionmanual in order to protect against damage to rhe instrument.
fIndicates dangerous voltage (terminals fed from the interior byvoltage exceeding 1000volts must be so marked).
0 Protective conductor terminal. For protection against electrical+ OR * shock in case of a fault. Used with field wiring terminals to in-dicate the terminal which must be connected to ground beforeoperating equipment.0
Low-noise or noiseless, clean ground (earth) terminal. Used for asignal common, as well as providing protection against electricalshock in caseof a fault. A terminal marked with this symbol mustbe connected to ground in the manner described n the installation(operating) manual, and before operating the equipment.
d7 OR L tures.Frame or chassis erminal. A connection to the frame (chassis)ofthe equipment which normally includes all exposed metal struc-
b Alternating current (power line).--- Direct current (power line).
Alternating or direct current (power line).
Lpi-, The WARNING sign denotes a hazard. It calls attention to a pro-cedure, practice, condition or the like, which, if not correcrly per-formed or adhered to, could result in injury or death to personnel. The CAUTION sign denotes a hazard. It calls attention to an
m operating procedure, practice, condition or the like, which,if notcorrectly performed or adhe red to, could result in damage to ordestruction of part or all of the product.NOTE: The NOTE sign denotes important information. It calls attentionto procedure, practice, condition or the like, which is essential tohighlight.

General Information
1-l. INTRUUUCTION.l-2. The Operating and Service ManuaI contains infor-mation required to install, operate, test, adjust, and WV-ice the Hewlett-Packard Model 3325A Synthesizer/Func-tion Generator. The Operating Manual supplement is acopy of the first three sections of the Operating and Serv-ice Manual, plus the Operational Verification proceduresfrom Section IV. The supplcmsnt should be kept withthe instrument for use by the operator. The part num-bers of both the Operating and Service Manual and theOperating Manual supplement are Shown on the titIepages.l-3. Also shown on the title page of this manual is aMicrofiche part number. This number can be used toorder 4 x 6 inch transparencies of the Operating andService Manual, Each Microfiche contains up to 96photo-duplicates of the manual pages, The Microfichepackage includes the latest Manual Changes supplementas well as pertinent Service Notes.1-4. Additional cop& of the Operating and ServiceManual, Operating Information Supplement, or ServiceNo&$ can be ordered through your nearest Hewlett-Packard Sales and Service Office. (A list of these officesis provided at the end of this manual.)1-5. INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION.f-4. The Mode1 3325A Synthesizer/Functicm Generatorproducea the following signals at a minimum frequencyof 1 pI+z and maximum frequency of:
Sine wave 20 MHzSquare wave 10 MHzTriangIe 10 kHzPosit ive slope ramp 10 kHzNegative slope ramp IO kHzFrequency may be seiected with up to eleven digits ofresolution. Output amplitude is 1 mV to 10 V peak-to-peak. The output level may also be selected or displayedin V rms or in dBm (50 ohms). Any function may be dcoffset up to f 4.5 V, or the output may be dc only up toL 5 V. An optitmal high voltage output produces up to40 V p-p into ~500 ohms load.1-7. Frequency sweep of all functicm$ is provided ialinear OJ lbg sweep, at sweep times of 10 milliseconds to99.99 seconds for linear sweep. Maximum time for logsweep is 99.99 seconds and minimum time is 2 secondsfor sir@ log sweep and 0.1 second for continuous logsweep. Single linear sweep may be up or down, whilecontinuous sweep is up/down/up, etc., in the linearmode and up/up, etc., in log mode.
l-8. The Model 3325A is fully programmable throughthe rear panel Hewlett-Packard Interface Bus (HP-IB)connector. A device such as a programmable calculatoris capable of remoteIy controIling the 3325A. Interfaceinformation is given in Section II of this manual, andprogramming inf0rmaticm is in Section III.l-9. SPECIFICATIONS.I-10. Instrument specifications are listed in Table 1-I.These specifications are the performance standards orlimi ts against which the instrument is tested. Anychanges in specifications due to manufacturing, designor traceabil ity to the U.S. Nationai Bureau of Standardsare included in Table l-l of this manual and/or theManual Changes Supplement.
1-l 1. SUPPLEMENTAL OPERATING INFORMATION.I-12, Table 1-2 contains information describing generaloperating characteristics of the 3325A, This informa-tion is supplemental operating information and is not tobe considered as specifications.l-13.
