On the 13th of september we set off to London in search of skateparks. We sessioned Clapham Common skatepark, went HAM at House of Vans and took in some history at South Bank. Met up with a loadof cool people, watched skate videos and slept on the worst airbed ever. The floor in other words.

On the 14th we headed to the Unicorn Girl Skate Jam. Some of us felt a bit like we had been hit by a bus. Managed to get away with using a child ticket all day that was a good shout. Mile end skatepark was awesome and everyone went hesh at the jam.

Partied with some cool people and got shouted at by women out of flat windows for skating in the street and making too much noise. Almost got completely lost and only just made the megabus home.

Nobody got hurt.Nobody got arrested.Nobody got mugged.I got a 9” pizza for £3.50 and survived.

We discovered that skating through underground tunnels is the best thing ever and that London skateparks rock.So when’s the next trip then?

We beat London

The Pink List is a list of companies compiled by Mutter Skate, that show women as equal team members without putting them on separate teams or mentioning that they are “girls”. The mantra behind the list is to buy products from brands that acknowledge our existence and acknowledge girls place in the skateboarding world as equals. To keep up to date with The Pink List or find out more about Mutter Skate visit http://mutterskate.tumblr.com/.

These Energy balls are great for when you need a boost. They are healthy but taste like cookies, and have enough fiber and protein to keep you going. They are easy to make, don’t need to be baked and can be frozen. Every ingredient can be swapped out for something else, so they are super flexible if you have allergies or want a to make a vegan version.

• In a bowl stir together the wet ingredients. Then add the dry ingredients and mix until evenly coated. Put the mixture in the fridge for about ten minutes to set.

• Take the mixture out of the fridge and shape into 1 inch balls.

I’ve heard it enough and yet I’m never exactly sure what to think when someone says the words ‘you’re pretty good for a girl’. Is it a good thing. Is it bad thing. Any action sport I tried I’ve heard it.

When I was young I just took it as a compliment. I prefered to hang out with boys and I thought I could keep up with them. For a while I did. As they grew up things changed.

As I got older and started snowboarding it was something I was still hearing. And I was way better than the punters I was hearing it from. It made me think, what does that actually mean?

I came to 3 possible meanings;

-You’re pretty good… But you’re only a girl so you don’t have to

be that good.

-You’re pretty good for a girl… but most girls can’t even stand

on a skateboard so the fact that you can drop in is impressing

me.

-I’ve seen that the level or girl skating right now is really high

and I think you’re killing it.

you’re pretty good... for a girl

But it is mostly the first two lets face it. Its not only men. I’ve heard it from women too. Its not exactly like you can ask for clarification on their intent.

Organisations like Skate Like a Girl and Girl Skate UK are paving the way for lots of young girls, they can see positive female role models and receive encouragement from others. With social media you can start finding other girl skaters. In the past if you were the only one in your area you could end up feeling alone.

“When people see girls skating, they don’t see us as skaters. They don’t think we take it seriously and are willing to go all out. But we are right underneath them working super hard to be where they are at.”

Alana Smith(http://www.forbes.com/ 2014)

I suddenly had this motivation to progress

One of the main reasons I preferred inlining as a kid over skateboarding came down to having a role model to look up too. Womens skateboard contests were rarely shown on tv but Fabiola da Silva was competing and holding her own against the men in the inline contests. I could say ‘I’m going to be as good as her’ and believe it. It was a lot more difficult to see skateboarding contests, dominated by men, and say the same.

I liked skateboarding but I didn’t believe I’d get past the basics and drop in anything over 3ft. What changed was meeting more skater girls, and discovering Girl Skate UK on Instagram. I started seeing girls going hard and realised there was no reason I couldn’t. I suddenly had this motivation to progress again. Getting feedback even if it was just a thumbs up emoji let me know I was doing something right.

Since I’ve got back into skating and found my own girl crew most guys have been cool. Some ignore us but I think thats less about our vaginas and more about how they treat everyone. Some men say if they were

girl they would be sick, or if they could compete against girls they would win.

I think often guys are surprised to see a girl doing anything good. Its weird to be at your local with 5 guys amazed at your existence. Giving stoke where its due is important. It makes progressing more fun. But its kinda awkward when you go to a park you’ve never been too and a guy starts banging out props for dropping in the 4 ft. However it means a hell of a lot when someone tells says honestly that you’ve been killing it. Its something that will come with time from have more girls on all sports, blades, bmx, skateboard and scooter.

At the end of the day, when someone say’s ‘you’re pretty good for a girl’, I want it to be a confidence boost not the opposite. But if I’m honest I’d prefer it if they ended it at ‘good’.Anna Beswick

Ankle roll sux, am I right? And bruised shins, wrists, elbows, knees, bums… But one bad slam doesn’t have to leave you out. If you treat a sprain, strain or tear quickly it can help you heal faster.

Now if theres a bone sticking out or you can’t put any weight on it with-out screaming, go to a hospital! Infact, even if it doesn’t feel right, just go. Waiting around in A+E for 6 hours just to find out it’s just a sprain is a bitch but finding out it was broken 3 weeks later when its already healed wrong is even worse.

However if your ankles a bit swollen or your knees a bit bruised follow this guide to relieve pain, reduce swelling and protect the damaged soft tissue.

restStop skating! I know just one more try right? But it is important to stop putting weight on the injury to protect it from further damage. Resting the injury helps it heal. Depending on how bad it is this could be for a couple, days or even longer. Sucks but its better than doing more damage

Page 18: Hoyden Zine - Issue 1

ice Get an ice pack or if you can’t get one a bag of peas, ice cubes in a t-shirt, can of soda, whatever you can put on it. Just don’t apply ice directly to the skin. The cold provides pain relief and gets the swelling down. 10 minutes on 10 minutes off, for as long as you need it (or until everything melts) Do not leave the ice pack on for more that 20 minutes as you can do more damage or even cause frostbite.

cOmpressiOnWrap something around the injury. If you don’t have a bandage you’re bandana or weed socks will do. This helps reduce the swelling and since that can slow down the healing process its a pretty good thing to do. If its throbbing its tied too tight. Re-wrap it because the last thing you want to do is cut off the circulation.

eLeVatiOnThis is great excuse to put your feet up, stick on netflix and get out of your chores whatever it is you’re supposed to be doing. On a serious note this is most effective if the injured area if elevated above your heart. So if its your wrist lay with it above your head or if its your ankle put it up on a couple of pillows.

drugs!!!Ibuprofen is good for injuries as it reduces inflammation. You can also take paracetamol at the same ibuprofen if you’ve really owned yourself. Don’t take over the recommend-ed dose.

If its still really swollen or painful in two days seek medical advice. Everyone skates on minor injuries but sometimes when you slam worse than normal its best to take it easy. Start stretching it out as soon as you can but don’t push it. It’s bunk when you can’t go skate but it is better to take a couple of days off from skating than be forced to take months out waiting for ligaments to reattach themselves.

• You should know how to footplant, caveman and knowing how to shuvit (fs or bs) isn’t vital but might help. To start with you will want to be rolling forward slowly. The foot position is similar to the pop shuvits but with the front foot closer to the tail.

• As you pop, plant your back foot on the floor and keep your other foot in the air. Your should catch the board once it has spun about about 90°. If you want to plant both feet on the floor to start with or take a step, do it.

• Twist the board around. You might start feeling a bit like a contortionist. Make sure your front foot stays out of the way or you’ll be visiting page 16

• Bring your elbow close to your body, the board should be at about 270°. Let go and let it rotate the last 90° by itself.

• Jump back on. You want to look for your bolts and try and land on them. You’ll bail onto your ass if you land too far back so shift your weight forward.

This is a fun trick good looking trick for flatland and car park sessions. Its quick to learn but more difficult to master. Don’t give up. The variations are limitless and it can be done over hips, gaps and other obstacles. Throw in spins and flips. Make up your own versions so you have a few cheeky tricks to throw in a game of skate that no one can match.
