This can be a great opportunity for self-reflection, a time to look back at the previous year and congratulate themselves on the things that went well, and take note of what it was that led to their successes. It is also perhaps a time to reflect on anything that hampered progress or was a barrier to achieving a goal. The beginning of a new year is a time when students have a fresh clean slate. If there are things that they would like to do differently we are glad to support them to achieve their personal best. It is thus timely to reflect briefly on what we value at Hoxton Park High School. The types of behaviours and attitudes that we want to see embedded in the fabric of our school. As such we should be able to see these values at work in our school on a daily basis. To this end, we expect the following of our students: We trust that you will encourage your child to embrace our values and adhere to the school’s code of ethics. Our school culture is very strong and students, I find, are open and accepting. We do like any school, have at times issues of bullying and harassment but we work hard to support students and through discipline measures, deal with the issues. Notification of any school issues are of the highest importance. If your child is unhappy, feeling unsafe or not supported, please pick up the phone and call the school and ask for the Deputy Principal or Head Teacher Welfare. We can do a lot to help support students when informed by parents. Please do not hesitate to call. Fortunately the weather is becoming a little cooler, making days at school more comfortable. This is a timely reminder to both students and families to refer to the school uniform requirements when students are looking for warmer clothing. We are a ‘uniform’ school endorsed by our school community. Our uniform expectations are embedded into our core values and when students are enrolled at Hoxton Park High School uniform expectations are explained in detail and accepted by parents. A new Minimum HSC Standard has been introduced for the 2020 HSC cohort. This will impact on our current Year 9 students. To meet the standard, students must achieve a minimum result of Band 8 in Reading, Writing and Numeracy in Year 9 NAPLAN. If they fail to meet that standard they will have other opportunities to do so in Year 10, 11 and 12. Many of our students generally don’t have a lot of problem meeting that standard in Reading and Numeracy but there are some who struggle with Writing. The Learning Support team have developed a plan to support students achieve their best. The Minimum Standard does not apply to students doing Life Skills courses. It was pleasing to see so many parents taking the opportunity to meet with teachers at our ‘Meet & Greet’ afternoon and our Open Night evening. If you missed this opportunity please feel free to contact teachers to discuss any concerns you may have for your child’s success. My staff and I will continue to work closely with families and our community to develop and implement programs to support our young people in obtaining the best possible educational outcomes to equip them for life after school. Deputy Principal’s Report – Ms ElkeFitzgerald

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other publicschools in the state, will participate in a Department ofEducation initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedbacksurvey. The survey measures factors that are known to affectacademic achievement and other student outcomes. The focusof the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagementand effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provideus with valuable and quick feedback on what they think aboutschool life, how engaged they are with school and the differentways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia andaround the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey tohelp improve how they do things at school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The surveyis conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutesto complete. It will be administered during school hours duringthis term in Week 10/11. Participating in the survey is entirelyvoluntary.

Copies of the form and FAQs are available from:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

Year 12 Parent Teacher Evening is on Tuesday 4th Marchfrom 4pm-6pm in the school Library. This is a greatopportunities for parents to talk with staff regarding their child’sprogress in the HSC.

In 2016 we trailed an electronic booking system - SessionKeeper and the feedback from staff and parents was verypositive.

All Year 12 students have been issued a parental note regardingthe evening, however, for further information about how to bookan appointment via Session Keeper please click on the linkbelow.

A big thank you to Ms Fonseca, PeterBowles and the four hospitality students (Anna Le, Ester Leilua,Jodan Maddocks and Chrisovalantou Giannas-Leventis) for alltheir hard work preparing for the event, setting up the coffeecart and making coffees on the day.

Year 11 Fast Forward University Day

Throughout the Fast forward experiences, the on-campus daysare always the best ones as they give us an insight of whatuniversity life is like while informing us and guiding us step bystep to be prepared for life and education after high school. For most, university becomes daunting as the possibilities afterhigh school are endless, however, through the Fast Forwardprogram we learn to maximise our potential, consider universityas well as back up options and careers that are right and howto get there.

8E1 – Blackout Poetry

This term 8EN1 are studying the fine art of poetry.

As an introductory activity to get their creativity flowing, thestudents created blackout poetry. This is when we selectspecific words within existing texts to create free verse poetry.Free verse poetry is free of the restrictions of regular poeticforms, emphasising the expression of emotion and meaning.

After careful consideration of their poetry’s content, studentsthen work on blacking out the rest of the text with images thatreflect the overall tone and message of their poetry.

Year 10 Sydney Jewish Museum Visit

This term, the year 10 History classes were given theopportunity to visit the Sydney Jewish Museum for a day. Thedifferent classes were split into different groups and were givena tour of the museum by the volunteers who gave us insight ofwhat had occurred during World War II in Europe.

For some, before the tour were given an oral testimony byan actual survivor of the Holocaust who had enlightened theiraudience of their experiences. The survivor who had given mygroup his testimony was a man named John. He talked about

5

Page 6: Hoxton Park High School eNewsletter...2017/04/02  · Year 11 Visual Arts Year 11 Visual Arts students have eagerly started their preliminarycourseandarebusyplanningtheir‘bodyofwork’.

how his father had prepared him to migrate to Manchester inthe United Kingdom before any actual suffering had occurred inhis hometown of Czechoslovakia while his parents and siblingwent down a different path from him. From then on, Johnexplained how he was welcomed and accepted by the Britishand had adjusted to his new home although he did notunderstand the British life. After living in Manchester, he hadfinally discovered the tragedy that had forsaken his family. Alongthe track he had gotten married and found a new start inAustralia. In today’s time john is now a regular man who issharing his horrific story to the new generation, in hope thathistory wouldn’t repeat itself.

Moving onto the tour, a volunteer of the museum named Geraldhad given us a tour of the different aspects that had occurredduring the Holocaust. We were shown artefacts that weresaved from when some camps were liberated, there were manyfragile objects such as toys of children during the holocaust, pyjamas that were considered the uniform of the Jews andthe undesirables that were held in the concentration camps. There were also diaries uncovered that contained memoriesof survivors. From another aspect of the Holocaust, we wereshown how some Jewish members had shown resistance inboth the ghettos and camps they were contained in. Forexample, some kept the Torah hidden and others tried to denytheir religion altogether.

At the end of the day, the whole of year 10 were enlightenedwith further information about what had happened during theHolocaust. Although the stories were heartbreaking, the storieswere interesting as we learnt of how people managed tosurvive. The visit to the Jewish Museum was an excellent andvaluable experience.

Mathematics Faculty ReportThis has been a busy term for the Mathematics faculty, withyear 12 assessments and reporting just finished and the firstof the year 7 – 10 assessments coming up. We also have theNAPLAN numeracy test next term to look forward to. This yearthe format of the NAPLAN numeracy test has a reduced focuson calculator work. Instead of two equal papers for calculatorand non calculator tests, there will be only one test, with a50 minute part A section for calculator based questions anda 10 minute part B section containing non-calculator basedquestions. It is therefore essential that all students own acalculator.

It is pleasing to see most students are coming to their lessonsequipped with a calculator. We recommend the Casio fx82-AUPlus II calculator for its ease of use in handling fractions. If yourchild does not currently own a calculator, we urge you to buyone of these calculators as it will be a great help when it comesto solving fractions based problems.

PDHPE Faculty ReportIt has been a busy Term 1 in the Personal Development, Healthand Physical Education faculty. All classes have settled inquickly and have been demonstrating the Hoxton Honour Codethroughout lessons. This is evident by the positive learningexperiences that have been taking place in the variety ofPDHPE subjects offered. The wet weather has not been idealthroughout the first section of this semester and unfortunatelyit has had an impact on the practical components of mostsubjects. While students have been provided with theopportunity to engage in various physical activities, unfortunately, it has been restricted due to the weather andwill resume to normal once the rain stops. Students across allstages have had the chance to display their knowledge of thecontent through a variety of assessment tasks that have alreadybeen completed. Year 8 students have impressed with theirmaturity levels and produced a ‘Puberty Pamphlet’ designedto inform others of the changes adolescents face during thisperiods of their lives. Year 10 students have been taughtthrough a variety of methods about essay writing, which is theirassessment for the current unit of study. Year 11 students haveprogressed well with the higher demands of senior studies inCommunity and Family Studies (CAFS), Personal Development,Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) and Sports Coaching. There has been a variety of extracurricular sporting activitiesthat students have engaged with over the course of the termand have represented our school with pride and should becongratulated for this. The Year 11 Sports Coaching studentswere fortunate to have representatives from the National RugbyLeague (NRL) attend our school and teach them about differentaspects of coaching. HPHS – Smart Farm Excursion

Convention Centre

Being a part of the vast amount of people to attend the SMARTFarm excursion was a breathtaking experience with manypositives. I was honoured to be joined and to participate withprofessionals to construct our own robots from scratch. Weused metal to make the base and electronic wires to power itall together. We also screwed wheels so we could drive andcontrol it later on, which was an amazing but tricky skill to learn.Later on, we had an absolute surprise visit by the one and only,Jessica Mauboy. She looked phenomenal and asked us howwe put our robots together. In the end, we all gathered to takephotos to hold this memory and to always remember our funexperience!

Sheida Shahbazi Dashti

The Smart Farm excursion to Darling Harbor was rewardingand a thrilling experience. We spent the day making a robot, playing a navigation game, eating Mentos, using our robotson the roof (which overlooked the amazing view of the cityand water landscape), and meeting the fabulous singer JessicaMauboy. Everyone had a lot of fun, especially meeting JessicaMauboy and building and competing our robots.

It uses a very broad definition of disability, takenfrom the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the DisabilityStandards for Education 2005, which describe a broad rangeof health and learning conditions for which schools are requiredto provide ‘reasonable adjustments’ to support students toparticipate on the same basis as other students.

The Data Collection will take place during Terms 2 and 3. Nopersonal or identifying information about any student will beincluded, however, if you decide you do not wish informationabout your child to be included in the Data Collection, you canopt-out by signing and returning the opt-out consent form.

Aboriginal Report

Term 1 has been very productive for our ATSI students atHPHS. All Personalised Learning Pathway plans have beendeveloped in consultation with the students and their parents/carers. In some plans, helpful was the contribution of theAboriginal Community Liaison Officer, Ms Carol Brown. Allplans have been completed and uploaded on the schoolsystem to support our ATSI students in their learning byensuring that Academic, Aspirational and Cultural goals are setand our students are working towards them.

Our Year 11 ATSI students launched the2017 Pathways to Dreaming programwhich our school participates in and is run bythe Western Sydney University. Pathways to Dreaming has twocomponents: one practical with workshops run on campus, aiming at developing various skills of our students and onementoring with WSU mentors visiting our school and runningsessions in the library for our Year 8-12 ATSI students.

will be partaking in cultural dances and performances, tastingof different foods and joining in on new and different culturaltraditions.

The end of this term will bring the Year 7 and 8, SRC andPrefect camp, of which a large number of year 7’s areattending. The camp will be filled with many challenging andthrilling activities and I am sure year 7 is looking forward to thecamp.

As the term is rapidly coming to an end, I am happy to say thatyear 7 has settled in well and have become important membersof the Hoxton Park High School community. We wish our year7 cohort a wonderful and safe holiday.

Mrs M Joseph

Year 8 Advisor’s ReportYear 8 has settled well into their first term of 2016. They arecurrently undertaking an additional subject, Japanese. Thisprovides an exciting and even challenging new experience forthe Year 8 students, where they can learn about a new cultureand a new language. Learning a new language is anachievement anyone can be proud of and it can be verysatisfying. It gives students an opportunity to see fascinatingnew things from a new perspective and allows them to connectwith new people, as a new culture has its own music, style, history and literature.

In Week 11 Year 8 will be attending the Years 7 and 8 Campcombined with the Prefects, SRC and Peer Support Leadersat Forster. Some of the activities will include quad biking, flyingfox, tree top challenges and canoeing, which can help to buildteam spirit and confidence. It’s a wonderful way to start theholiday break.

I would like to wish all of you a safe and restful break over theschool holidays and look forward to seeing you back for thestart of term 2.

Kind Regards

Year 9 Advisor’s ReportWell-done to students on the completion of their firstassessment task for 2017! Each student has received anAssessment Booklet, which assists in the planning andorganisation of all of the subject’s assessments for the year.I encourage both parents and students to sit down and lookthrough the booklet, as it outlines the responsibilities andprocedures that students may need to undertake if they areabsent or require an extension for a task.

Café Hoxton is up-and-running, and selected Yr 9 studentshave been working hard in the café to serve up delicious treatsand coffees. It’s a wonderful initiative that helps students todevelop communication and retail skills, as well as managingtheir responsibilities. Keep up the great work!

TheAssessment Booklet has all the information that students needto know about handing in assessment tasks, requestingextensions, attendance and the N-Warning processes. For students to continue to be activelearners, it is highly recommended that they refer to theirassessment booklet throughout the year. Year 10 students arealso beginning to consider their goals, aspirations and subjectpathways for Stage 6 in 2018/19. Year 10 students areencouraged to speak to their year advisers and career adviserto seek more advice regarding their senior pathway.

Year 11 Advisor’s ReportWith just 7 weeks into Term 1, our Year 11 students have hadto adjust to their senior subjects, tackle assessment tasks, bea positive role model as peer support leaders, maintain theirSRC responsibilities and manage fundraising projects, all whilstcontinuing to be active learners. Senior years can be tough butby creating a realistic study timetable and setting long termand short term goals, they can organise their way to success.Have a thorough read of your assessment schedule and policybooklet as well as communicate with your teachers on how tosolve those head-scratching problems.

Jersey Committee: Please have your designs ready for approvalby the 17th of March.
