How to Make an Effective Poster

Poster presentations given at scientific meetings are widely used in medicine, nursing, and alliedhealth professions to communicate research findings. A good poster presentation can be aneffective way to share the results of your research with your peers, in a collegial and non-threatening atmosphere. Feedback received during a poster session can be invaluable in refin-ing your research and preparing for publication in a peer reviewed journal. A typical posterpresentation follows the same format as a scientific paper. Poster sections include a title banner,the abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion, conclusions, and tables and figures.Technical details of poster production include decisions on what materials and methods to useto print and display your poster, font size, whether to use a professional graphics departmentfor production, and cost. Presentation of your research at a professional meeting can be arewarding experience, and is a useful step toward publishing your research in a respectedscience journal. Introduction

Abstract and poster presentations are widely used atscientific meetings, conferences, and assemblies to com-

municate research findings in the biophysical sciences,1

medicine,2–4 nursing,5–6 and allied health professions.7–8

Poster presentations can also effectively promote learningand foster critical thinking skills among health sciencestudents.9–12 Developing an effective poster presentationis a skill that is easy to learn and provides a rewarding wayfor you to present the results of your research in a collegial

and supportive atmosphere that can be less intimidatingthan a formal lecture presentation, especially for a noviceresearcher. In this article I will describe the purpose of theposter presentation, the components of a good poster, andsome technical details related to poster production.

Purpose of the Poster Presentation

The purpose of a poster presentation is to clearly andeffectively communicate the results of your research toyour peers in a format that stimulates interaction and dis-cussion. Presenting at a scientific meeting or assemblysuch as the OPEN FORUM at the International RespiratoryCongress of the American Association for Respiratory Careprovides you the opportunity to meet people who havesimilar interests and to receive feedback and suggestions.That feedback can be helpful when it is time to write yourresearch paper for journal submission, as well as for con-tinuing, modifying, or expanding your research efforts.Colleagues’ feedback at a poster presentation often leadsto new and better ideas for additional research and touseful suggestions for improving your research and yourpresentation of it. In any event, developing your abstractand poster presentation is an important step toward win-ning acceptance and publication of your research in a re-spected peer-reviewed science journal such as RESPIRA-TORY CARE. In addition, your presentation may lead torecognition from peers and colleagues, which can advanceyour career. As another benefit, OPEN FORUM abstracts arepublished in RESPIRATORY CARE. However, the most im-portant reason for your poster presentation is to advancethe science and practice of respiratory care.

There are 3 basic types of poster presentations: originalstudy; evaluation of a method, device, or protocol; andcase report or case series. An original study typically leadsto a traditional research report, using an accepted researchmethodology. Examples include descriptive research, ob-servational studies, retrospective studies, and experiments.An evaluation of a method, device, or protocol generallydescribes a systematic evaluation of a newer technique ordevice. Examples include evaluations of new measure-ment devices (eg, oximeters, blood gas analyzers, moni-toring equipment, spirometers) or new equipment for de-livering respiratory care. An evaluation should include theresults and interpretation of any tests performed and yourexperience with the device, method, or protocol. A casereport presents an uncommon clinical case that has excep-tional educational value. A case report can also report theeffect of a new or improved method of management ortreatment. Case reports should provide patient data andresponses, as well as details of interventions.

Methods for presenting your research poster include theuse of bullet points, tables, figures, photographs, and dia-grams that help explain your research. Regardless of the

style you choose for your poster, the traditional compo-nents of a research report will be included: abstract, intro-duction (or background), methods, results, discussion, andconclusions. When properly done, the poster presentationwill lead to a full journal paper submission. The materialsand methods used to make a poster range from a “do ityourself” approach (which minimizes costs) to completesupport provided by a university or hospital graphics de-partment. Methods to produce a professional quality posterat a reasonable cost are described below.

Components of a Research Poster

Banner

A poster’s banner (Fig. 1) shows the title, author(s), andinstitution. The display board for a poster is typically 4feet tall by 6 feet wide. The banners should be 10–12inches tall and 4 feet wide. The banner’s print should belegible at 20 feet. The banner may be mounted on matboard or printed on roll paper. The banner should have1-inch margins on all sides. Most authors include theirinstitution’s logo or seal on the left side of the banner.

Abstract

The abstract section of the poster must accurately sum-marize the hypothesis or research question, the methods,the data, and the conclusions described in the other sec-tions of the poster. The abstract should be the same as theone submitted for consideration in applying to make theposter presentation. The font size should generally be 16–18points for the abstract, introduction, methods, results, andconclusions sections of your poster. The text of your postershould be legible at a distance of 3 feet or more. I recom-mend using Times, Times New Roman, Arial, or Helveticatypeface.

Introduction

The introduction section of your poster should addressthe question, “Why did you start this research?” This sec-tion clearly defines the topic and explains what was stud-ied and why—the rationale and importance of your study.The introduction should also include your research ques-tion(s) and/or the hypotheses you tested. The introductionsection can consist of text and/or bullet points, dependingon your personal preference and on which method makesthe information clearest and easiest to read. I prefer to usetext as the general format for a poster, as it makes it easierto convert the poster into a full-length paper for journalsubmission. Use the same typeface and font size for allsections of the poster, with the exception that the font sizein tables and figures may be different (typically, smaller).

Methods

The methods section of your poster should explain whatyou did. Ideally, the methods section gives enough infor-mation to allow another researcher to replicate the study,though that may not be possible in a poster, because ofspace considerations. The paper you submit to a scientificjournal must provide enough detail for study replication.On your poster the methods section should provide enoughdetail to allow another researcher to judge if the studydesign was adequate to answer your research questionsand/or test your hypotheses, and thus to judge the validityof your study. Your data analysis and/or statistics usedshould also be described, including what p value you choseto indicate statistically significant differences. The meth-ods section should also indicate:

• The population and subjects studied

• How subjects were selected

• How subjects were assigned to the study groups (ran-domly or by some other means)

• The interventions or exposures, procedures, and/or pro-tocols you studied

• Whether the subjects and/or the researchers were blinded

• What devices you used (include the model name/num-ber, manufacturer name, and what city and state themanufacturer is in)

• What outcomes were measured

Results

The results section presents what you found in yourstudy. This section includes your statistical analysis andtables and/or figures showing your data. Tables and fig-ures should be used to clarify and depict your study’sresults, and they should be clear, self explanatory, anduncomplicated. Figures must include legends.

Discussion

The discussion section tells what you think your resultsmean. This section may also present supporting evidencefrom published reports. Any contradictory findings shouldbe addressed, and the limitations of your study should bedescribed.

Conclusions

In a poster you may create a separate conclusions sec-tion, or use the last paragraph of the discussion section tostate your conclusions, whereas in a paper submitted to ajournal the conclusions (or summary) section is required.Your conclusions should directly relate to your study’sresearch questions and hypotheses and should be supportedby and consistent with your study results.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures are used to clarify and display studyresults. Tables and figures should be used only if they

present your data more clearly and make your results easierto interpret than would text. Generally, tables and figuresappear only in the results section, but in some cases theremay be cause to use them in other sections. Tables are gen-erally used to report data or list information. Figures arereserved for graphs, line drawings, photographs and radio-graphs. Figures may be in black-and-white or color, but whendesigning a figure it may be best to use black-and-white only,on the assumption that your poster presentation will lead tosubmitting a paper to a scientific journal. It is unlikely that ascientific journal will publish the figure in color, and at thatpoint the figure would have to be reworked to account for theloss of color. You must obtain copyright permission for aborrowed figure, and you must have a letter of consent fromany individual who is identifiable in a photograph you intendto use as a figure.

Technical Details

The typeface and font size should be such that yourposter can be easily read from a distance of 3 feet or more.The banner should be legible from at least 20 feet. Figure1 shows the general layout of a conference poster.

Options for printing your poster include doing the workyourself or using a graphics department at your institutionor a commercial graphics company. We use our graphicsdepartment for banners, and we do the rest of the printingand poster mounting within our department. A full-color,laminated roll poster done by a graphics department cancost as much as $600. A banner with the institutional sealgenerally costs about $35. We then purchase glossy paper,mat board, and related supplies, and print our own text andfigures using either a laser printer or good-quality colorprinter. This keeps the cost down to only a few dollars.

For printing we use a laser printer and print the text foreach section on 8.5�11-inch glossy paper, in landscapeorientation. We prefer Arial typeface and 24-point font.For all the poster’s sections other than the banner we setthe printer margins at 0.75 inches on all sides, for sectionsthat will fit on a single sheet of paper. When 2 or morepages need to be aligned to result in a section length of� 8.5 inches, the margins of the pages to be fitted togetherare set at 0.2 inches on the bottom of the first sheet and 0.2inches on the top of the second sheet, which allows the 2sheets to be mounted on the mat board as one continuoussheet. Any excess paper at the bottom of a sheet is trimmedusing a large paper cutter and leaving a 1-inch margin.

Another option is to set up your poster presentation as aseries of Microsoft PowerPoint slides. The sections andsequence of your presentation are the same as described

above, but each slide is printed on an 8.5�11-inch sheet ofhigh-quality paper. Each slide is then mounted on matboard or poster paper, with 1-inch borders on all sides.Banners can be printed with any of several word process-ing programs, and the separate sheets are taped together toform one continuous roll. Regardless of the method youchoose, doing most of the work yourself can save consid-erably on production costs.

Summary

The poster presentation is an opportunity to clearly andeffectively communicate the results of your research topeers and colleagues. Participation in a poster session willprovide you an opportunity to meet with others and toreceive feedback and suggestions on your research. Par-ticipation in poster sessions such as the OPEN FORUM canlead to recognition and career advancement. It will also bea useful step toward publishing your research in a re-spected science journal. Doing research and presentingyour findings is an essential activity to advance the scienceand practice of respiratory care.
