description

The Tibbals Greeting Card Collection contains predominantly Christmas cards from major 20th century American circuses and New Year’s greeting cards with the exception of a Valentine’s Day card from The Kenneth Feld family. There are Christmas cards originating from circuses, performers, circus fans and non-circus sources. Some cards include envelopes and contain handwritten notes. Many of the cards sent by circuses were signed by individual employees of that particular circus, such as the general representative or the advertising manager. Blank cards do not have a correspondent signature. Approximately half of the cards are undated. Several incorporate original artwork and designs. Of special interests are the cards illustrated by Bill Ballantine and Roland Butler as well as the outstanding artwork created for Carl Hagenbeck, Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus and the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Historical Note

Cards date from the 1920’s through the 1990’s. There is one greeting card in the collection that

dates back to the 1850’s from Strand, London. During the 19th century, many middle class

families began using greeting cards as a form of annual communication. These cards were often

sent before or during holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Year’s, and birthdays.

Greeting cards were often chromolithographed and were embellished with moveable parts,

tassels, and cut out shapes. Greeting cards were also personalized by the sender with handwritten

messages. However, during the 20th century, as disposable income by the middle class in the

west began to grow along with workers demanding better conditions and pay, the makers of such

elaborate cards declined. In order to keep up with high demands, greeting cards became the

typical shape we see today with humorous line drawings or works of art.
