The Board of Directors of the Granby Education Foundation presents this report of the Foundation’s activities for our fiscal year that began on July 1, 2013, and ended on June 30, 2014.
We are proud of the work we do to support our teachers, our fellow nonprofit organizations, our students, and our citizens. We look forward to continuing to expand the reach and the impact of our activities in the years ahead.
SupporttheAnnualFundThe Annual Fund is what keeps the GEF in business and what funds the Foundation’s semi-annual Community Grant Program. It also provides a financial base from which the GEF can draw when unexpected educational opportunities arise. We accept tax-deductible donations to this fund year round.
TributeprogramHonor a student, teacher, administrator, or community member who has made a difference in education through a tax-deductible donation to the Granby Education Foundation. Each honoree will receive a special gift card from the GEF, noting that a gift has been made in his or her name.
PlannedGivingProvide additional support through a planned gift such as appreciated securities or leave a lasting legacy in support of our mission through a bequest.
GivetotheGEFArtsEndowmentThe Granby Education Foundation has established a permanent Arts Endowment that will generate up to $10,000 annually to support cultural arts programs and activities. We accept tax-deductible donations to the Arts Endowment year round.

How You Can HelpThere are a number of ways in which you can support the Granby Education Foundation, both financially and with the donation of your time. The following is a list of some of the ways in which you can get involved. I support the Granby Education Foundation’s mission
to nurture educational excellence in Granby.
2014ANNUAL REPORT
Community Grant ProgramThe General FundThe Granby Education Foundation (GEF) raised more than $26,300 to benefit its General Fund during the 2013-14 fiscal year. The GEF is grateful to its supporters for showing such generosity. The General Fund supports the Foundation’s Community Grant Program. In 2013-14, a total of $9,975 in grants was awarded. The balance was saved, putting the Foundation in a position to support worthy projects as they come along, such as the Summer Drama Academy. It also is helpful in showing potential grantors (particularly other charitable foundations) that the Granby Education Foundation has the solid support of the community.
Community GrantsThe Granby Education Foundation’s Community Grant Program continues to make an impact on our community’s educational environment. Between the fall of 2013 and the spring of 2014, the GEF received 5 grant requests and awarded 4 grants. In 2013-14, the recipients ranged from pre-school age to senior citizens; and from school-based programs to community nonprofits. The following grants were awarded to recipients whose requests for funding of programs: 1.) demonstrated exceptional educational value and merit; and 2.) did not supplant items that could, in the opinion of the GEF’s board of directors, be covered within existing budgets. More information regarding these grants and the Community Grant Program can be found on the GEF’s website: www.granbye-ducationfoundation.org.
RoboticsClubWells Road Intermediate School was granted $1,475 as seed money to establish a FLL Robotics team for fifth and sixth grade students. This activ-ity will tap the critical thinking skills through fun “game-like” challenges and will provide the stu-dents with an opportunity to work collaboratively while creating solutions to real world problems.
NutritionalEducationHolcomb Farm’s Fresh Access Program, in part-nership with the Granby Senior Center and Granby Memorial High School’s Culinary Arts Program, was awarded $1,500 as seed money to establish a program of intergenerational culinary program-ming. These will include cooking demonstrations, nutrition education, and events that bring students and seniors together to improve the health, knowledge, and vitality of the community.
WeatherStationsThe Granby Public School system was granted $3,000 to purchase two weather stations that will be installed at the Salmon Brook Ecology Center (located on the GMMS/GMHS campus) and at Granby’s partner school in Hartland. These web-based stations will expand the use of the Ecology Center into all classrooms throughout the district, providing real-time data for use in a variety of curriculums including science, broadcast, and world language.
SchoolClimateBookClubGranby Memorial Middle School was awarded $4,000 to establish a school-wide book club to ex-plore the themes of dignity, respect, ethical leader-ship, empathy, character, and the idea that everyone contributes to a positive school environment. All students and staff members at GMMS will read the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio that will then serve as a point of common ground throughout the school year for discussion groups, supplemental activities, and a culminating project. A book club for GMMS parents will be offered as well, extending the pro-gram into the students’ homes.
The Arts EndowmentThe GEF Arts Endowment exists to provide a permanent source of funding to support and promote initiatives in the arts. Our goal is to fund opportunities within our community that expose multiple generations to exemplary works of art. The Foundation has endowed $200,000 for this purpose.
Arts Endowment GrantsThe GEF Arts Endowment Grant Program distributed more than $2,150 in its fourth year. The Foundation received 4 grant applications and 3 requests were awarded. The following grants were awarded between the fall of 2013 and the spring of 2014. For more information about these grants and the Arts Endowment Grant Program please visit our website at: www.granbyeducation-foundation.org.
MusicalTechnologyThe Music Department of Kelly Lane and Wells Road Schools was awarded $654 for the purchase of an iPad that will give the staff, who travel between the schools and use a variety of spaces, the ability to enhance their curriculum. Using a variety of applications, it will be possible to: compose, edit, and share original compositions; practice reading and writing music; record performances for assessment; function as a music library and provide accompaniment for students during rehearsals; and even act as an instrument for students who are physically challenged.
FiestadelNorteAssemblyKelly Lane and Wells Road School were awarded $1,100 to bring the well-known Mariachi group Fiesta del Norte to perform for them in support of their Spanish language curriculum. Fiesta del Norte dresses in traditional charro outfits and plays
a wide repertoire highlighting the varied styles of music from several areas of Mexico. They use authentic instruments behind their beautiful bilingual singing, and weave song translations, storytelling and cultural insights between songs.
PercussionProgramValley Pre-School was awarded $400 to sponsor a percussion program that allows children to have a direct and hands on experience with a variety of cultures through music and a diversity of instru-ments. This grant was made possible by the Nannie Brown Tribute Fund.

Nannie Brown FundWhen Nannie Brown announced her retirement from Valley Pre-School (VPS), her fellow teachers and the VPS board of directors chose to honor and thank her for all she’s done, for the school and for Granby, by establishing the Nannie Brown Tribute Fund through the Granby Education Foundation. This endowed fund supports the GEF’s Community Grants, particularly, those programs which involve early childhood education. Donations are accepted year round and a listing of all donors to date may be found on our website.
Cal Heminway Fund Last fall, upon Cal Heminway’s retirement from the Granby Board of Education, a grateful Granby family established a Tribute Fund through the GEF to honor him for his many years of community ser-vice. A fundraising campaign is currently underway and a complete listing of donors will be published at its close.
Administrators, Teachers, Students, and Parents HonoredAt the close of the 2013-2014 school year, donations were made to the Granby Education Foundation (GEF) in honor of the teachers, administrators, parents, and students shown below. As part of the GEF’s mission is to encourage educational excellence, the Foundation is thrilled to recognize the ef-forts of these individuals. Please join the GEF in congratulating them and applauding their hard work and dedication.
The Gran-Bee
The Bee swarmed into town on
March 21, 2014 setting the town
abuzz. Granby’s First Selectman,
Scott Kuhnly, lead the event as
Master of Ceremony. His cache of
puns and quick wit set the tone for
a thoroughly enjoyable evening of
trivia competition. The cleverness
of the participating teams sent a
record number of swarms into tie-
breaker rounds. The suspenseful
event finally came to a close when
“Bee-ber Fever” bested the field of
finalists, clinching the champion-
ship title. Earlier in the evening,
they had been presented with the
Yellow Jacket Award for Best Cos-
tume, making them the first team
to win both honors.
Thanks to the community mem-
bers, businesses, and organizations
that support the Bee, the Granby Education Foundation was able to raise $7,000
in support of grant funding. Mark your calendars for March 13, 2015 so that you
don’t miss your chance to Bee a part of the fun!

Tribute Programs
Paul Winter ConcertOn Friday, November 15, 2013 the Granby Education Foundation brought Grammy Award–winner Paul Winter to town. In the morning, Mr. Winter presented his “Adventures in Sound Play” workshop to students at the Granby Memorial High School. In the evening, Paul Winter and pianist Jeff Holmes performed in concert for the community, sharing Mr. Winter’s vision of music which celebrates the creatures and cultures of the earth. The extraordinary talents of these two musicians provided an engaging and inspiring experience for audience members. Following the performance, a complimentary reception was offered at which concert-goers were able to meet Mr. Winter in person. Through events such as this, the GEF strives to fulfil the mission of its Arts Endowment by supporting artistic programming which exposes multiple generations of our community to exem-plary works of art.

Summer Drama AcademyThe Granby Education Foundation was pleased to sponsor the Granby Public School’s Summer Drama Academy in June of 2014. Artists from Hartford Stage instructed students in the foundations of acting which included; the art of building an ensemble, developing a character, practicing proper vocal and movement techniques, and strengthening concentration and focus skills. At the conclu-sion of the program, they applied these skills in a performance of well-known scenes from a variety of Shakespeare’s plays.
