World War II (WWII) Begins After WWI, countries in
Europe and Asia began fighting over land creating a new war, WWII. The leaders believed that they could do anything they wanted to, including killing people, who did not agree with them.
The United States did not want to be a part of this terrible war and tried to avoid it, but on December 7, 1941, Japanese fighter planes flew over O’ahu, Hawai’i (where Pearl Harbor is located) and dropped bombs and torpedoes for two hours!
Japan was trying to take over land in Asia and was worried that the U.S. Navy would attack them, so they attacked first. This surprise attack caused the United States to enter the war.
Military Bases When people join the military, they need to be trained first. People in the military train at bases.
South Carolina had many training bases:
1. Fort Jackson in Columbia 2. Shaw Field in Sumter 3. Spartanburg 4. Charleston 5. Myrtle Beach
How WWII Changed the
Economy -The Great Depression ended when the war began. -Farmers had jobs again as food and cotton were needed. -Textiles were needed for uniforms and tents. -Many people, including African Americans and women, joined the military.
Women during WWII Many women took over the
jobs in the factories that the men had left behind when left to fight in the war. In the military, women took jobs as nurses, photographers, ambulance drivers and pilots.
African Americans during WWII
Although President Roosevelt’s orders (laws) during the war offered military jobs to African Americans, they were still segregated (separated) and discriminated against. This means they were treated unfairly. This caused many African Americans to continue searching for jobs in northern and western cities.
War is OVER! When WWII ended in 1945, many people had jobs and were making money. Men who fought in the war, called veterans, received money from the government to go to college and start businesses to keep the economy strong.

For the teacher: There are two different copies of the brochure. The first one is SC specific and the other is generic so it could be used with any state study. They have the same cover. (There is only one cover). Print the front and inside on both sides, then fold in thirds. DONE! EASY!
