Local Listing - Why we did it

•2009 - Threat to an important heritage site -

inappropriate dense housing development

proposal from British Waterways (now CRT) at

Marple Wharf

•To identify and find a way to protect what is

important to Marple - heritage and community

assets, appropriate regeneration opportunities.

There are many buildings in Marple which are not “listed” but are nonetheless

worthy or recognition.

It is important that these are maintained and enhanced for the future!

• Absence of a heritage asset on the local list does not imply that it has no heritage value

A locally listed building in the Heatons has

been sensitively redeveloped into flats, giving

consideration to it’s special character.

The Carver Theatre, Church Lane.

Fine, stone built Georgian Building of Local

significance as a community theatre. Inclusion on

the local list will act to promote this building that is

important to the local people of Marple.

Architectural Interest

Stonehurst, Hibbert Lane

This is a good example of a villa style

property set within a large plot.

Asymmetrical in design with gables

and bay windows and hooded mould

details.

Historic Interest

Aquaduct House, located on the banks of the Peak Forrest Canal

Named on Bryant’s map of 1831 as Watch House.

‘L’ shaped plan house of handmade brick and interesting double arch detail

surrounding window of upper floor gable.

Visible historic link with the development of Marple’s industrial heritage, the Canal

network and Samuel Oldknow.

Close Historical Association

Albert Schools, Church Lane

Albert Schools were built in 1868, as a

congregational Sunday School at the instigation

of Thomas Carver of Hollins Mill, later became a

full time day school.

example of a distinct group of pre

industrial vernacular cottages in Marple
