short and to the point likesaying, “Hello!”

The purpose of an introduction

is to prepare

the reader for the body of writing that comes

after it. You know what you are writing

about and why. But unless you

inform your readers of this in

A Good Introduction:

1. Begins with a hook

2. Tells the reader the title, author and genre

of the work you are writing about

3. Provides background information thatbridges (or connects) to your thesis

4. Usually ends with a thesis statement

Today smoking is an issue which is

on everybody’s mind.

In the article, “Clearing the Smoke”

by Igor Stravinsky, the author

suggests that the whole country is

divided on this issue. Some people

believe that smoking should be

banned everywhere while others are

not so harsh.

However, I believe that tobacco

should be outlawed because smoking

endangers everyone’s health, pollutes

the environment, and drains us of

valuable energy.
