“Recipes For Success”

Each time you flavor a medication, you will reference specially-formulated recipes provided to you by FLAVORx. To find these recipes, you may reference various formularies including:

•The Smart Formulary

•The FLAVORx Digital Formulary

•Technical Support


The Smart Formulary

The Smart Formulary is a quick, go-to, hand held guide for you to use with the 32 most popularly dispensed liquids.

Each recipe for these 32 medications is listed alphabetically by generic name, drug strength, and volume.

This tool provides a quick recipe solution for the medications you see most often, like: Amoxicillin, Cefdinir, Hydrocodone, Prednisolone, and Ranitidine.

The FLAVORx Digital Formulary

All FLAVORx member pharmacies have access to an online formulary, the FLAVORx Digital Formulary.

The Digital Formulary is a comprehensive electronic formulary that includes all of our recipes, including over-the-counter products.

To use this formulary, bring up your computer’s internet browser and go to www.flavorxflavors.com. Select your pharmacy name from the drop-down list and enter your password. You may also have access via a link from your Pharmacy Homepage.

The 3 simple steps for using the online formulary are outlined in the following slides:

Digital Formulary Step By Step

STEP 1 – SELECT MEDICATIONIn the “Drug Name (or NDC)” field, either type in the full NDC for the desired medication, or the first few letters of the medication name, and hit [Enter]. This will bring up all matching drug entries. Scroll through the list and select the desired medication, including the specified strength. Click “Next”.

STEP 2- ENTER VOLUME AND SELECT FLAVORSelect a commonly dispensed volume to be flavored. If the volume is not available in the preset selection, you may enter your customized volume into the “Enter Drug Volume in mL” field. Then select the desired FLAVOR. Keep in mind that flavors highlighted in GREEN are recommended, flavors highlighted in GREY are okay for use, and flavors highlighted in RED are not recommended. Once you have verified the selected volume and flavor, click “Next”.

STEP 3 - FLAVORYour custom recipe will appear, along with any special instructions. The recipe displays the total amount of each ingredient to be added by drops and by mLs. You may print this recipe by clicking “Print.” Print off the recipe and Flavor! Follow the recipe step-by-step, by individually drawing out the indicated mLs of each ingredient required with your labeled syringes. If you are reconstituting the medication, our recipes will inform you of any water that should be subtracted from the total quantity before flavoring is added. Once you have completed the flavoring process, be sure to shake the medication well and place an auxiliary label on the bottle. It’s that simple!

Don’t Forget!

SEVERAL KEY THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND IN REGARDS TO FLAVORING

1.Generic and branded drugs are flavored with the same instructions. Identifying the correct active ingredient(s) is the key!

2.Medications can be re-flavored after being flavored with FLAVORx. If necessary, please call for directions.

3.FLAVORx can be added to OTC products.

4.The most popular flavors to date are bubblegum, grape, and strawberry.

5.Flavoring is easy and fun!
