How to Turn Windows 10 into a WiFi Hotspot

      Ayo Isaiah  29th Aug 2015

Windows 10 allows you to start a Wi-Fi hotspot on your computer, allowing you to share your

wireless connection with several devices. This could be a useful thing if you are restricted to just

one device per person on the Wi-Fi network or perhaps if you have only one password.

It’s a hidden feature, so there is no on/off switch to access this. However, there are several ways

    to achieve this.

Set Up Wi-Fi Hotspot Using the Command Prompt

This method does not require you to download any third-party application. You can easily set up

Wi-Fi hotspot using the built-in tools in Windows.

First, you need to open the command prompt with administrator privileges. Press the “Windows +

X” key on your and select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the pop-up menu.keyboard

Now we will create the hotspot. Simply enter the following command and press the Enter key:

netsh wlan hostednetwork mode allow ssid maketecheasier key passwordset   = = =

The SSID is the name of the WiFi connection and can be changed to anything you want. The KEY

is the password and can be changed, also but bear in mind that it has to be at least eight

    characters.

Next you need to start the following command to start the WiFi hotspot:

    netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Your WiFi hotspot should be activated and usable. You can check its status in the network and

sharing center of your control panel.

You can now connect your devices to the hotspot and use the same WiFi connection without

    using third-party tools.

You can turn off the hotspot when not in use with the following command:

    netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

Set Up WiFI Hotspot with Connectify Hotspot

If you’re not a fan of the above method, there are several applications that you can download and

use to share your WiFi connection with other devices.

One of the more popular ones is Connectify Hotspot. Its free version basically does the same

thing with the Command Prompt method, but you can turn your computer to a wired or Wi

    repeater with a subscription.

Once the application is installed, click the “Try it out” button to start using the tool. Your hotspot

will be assigned a default name and password, but you can change this. Keep in mind that with

the free version your hotspot name must start with “Connectify.” For example: “Connectify-me” o

    “Connectify-mte.”

Make sure to choose the correct Internet connection to share and set your password. Once done

you can start the hotspot by clicking the “Start Hotspot” button.

Now you can connect any other device to your Connectify Hotspot as you would with any other

    WiFi hotspot.

any alternatives to Connectify, don’t forget to share them in the comments section below.

Basic question: Will Hotspot take the place of my EXISTING WI-FI connection? Can

cancel my existing modem connection that supplies WI-FI ? In other words, will

Hotspot act as a modem on my pc?

I guess it is so obvious to you that your computer needs to be wireless for any wi䄵 hotspot to

work, that you omitted to mention it? But it is worth mentioning, for those who are a lot less

computer savvy than you because I am a lot more computer savvy than most of my family and

friends but it still took me a few minutes to realise it!

It looks like Will’s question wasn’t answered. The password is whatever you typed in

after the “key=” in the 䄵rst part of this process. That is also the password any user o

a mobile device connecting to the hotspot will have to enter to connect.

I don’t believe I have any use for this but it looked interesting. I used the command prompt

option and created a hotspot named ‘techcontrol’. It does show up but there is “no network

access’ and I can’t 䄵gure out why. I do know that the hotspot does not start back up when the p

is restarted. Starting and stopping the hotspot is cumbersome if you have to use the command

prompt. I opened Notepad and entered the string “netsh wlan start hostednetwork” and saved i

to my desktop as “Start Techcontrol.bat”. I then entered the stop string “netsh wlan stop

hostednetwork” and saved it to my desktop.as “Stop Techcontrol.bat”. I am surprised you didn’t

suggest using a batch 䄵le for this purpose. The batch 䄵le to start the hotspot could also be use

in startup to automatically start it on a reboot. If anyone can think of a reason why there is “no

network access” displayed for my hotspot I would appreciate your reply. Thank you.

To access the internet you need to start the virtual network then open properties on the virtual

adapter and click the sharing tab. click the 䄵rst box only, to share and ensure the second in

unticked. ok and close. Do not make any changes to the normal wi䄵 adapter. To retain this

command it is important when setting the intial:

    (Netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=XXXXXXXX key=XXXXXXXXXX

    keyUsage=persistent)

Note the addition of keyUsage=persistent. This ensures the instruction is retained in the registr

on exit. The use of .bat 䄵les are an excellent way of speeding up the connection and ensuring

    accuracy.

You may wish to use this as a range extender for an existing network. Please note all SSID`s

must be the same together with the password. If to have a multi worded SSID for the network

this will need to be changed as the cmd does not accept word spaces. This can be overcome b

using hyphens.I hope this is of help.

Sorry for the slip up I was incorrect with the adapters. the adapter to change is the

wi䄵 adapter on the sharing tab and also you will need to choose the virtual adapter

from a drop down list just below the check box.

main ethernet connection and choose “Properties.”

Under the “Sharing” tab, click the box labelled “Allow other network users to connect through th

computer’s internet connection.” In the drop down below the above box, choose the network

connection that currently has internet access. Click OK.). And also unchecked the second box a

My Nexus 6P sees the hotspot, but when attempting to connect, it stays stuck on “Obtaining IP

address..”. The Control Panel applet shows Local Area Connection, Shared, Microsoft Hosted

Network Virtual… but no Internet access.

The problem is that Local Area Connection*4 is NOT appearing as a choice in the drop down

menu. In fact, there’s no drop down menu at all in the Sharing tab under the host Ethernet

connection. “Home network connection” is 䄵xed as “Wi-Fi” and can’t be changed.

So how does one get the Local Area Connection*4 to show up in the Sharing tab?

Press the “Windows + X” key on your keyboard and select “Device Manager” from th

pop-up menu. On device manager double click on network adapters and enable

“Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter”. Try starting the network again

I’m using Windows 10 Pro and an i-Ball Dongle. I tried the command Prompt method. So when

tried to start Wi-䄵 with the second command it says “The hosted Network Couldn’t be started.

The wireless local area network is powered down and doesn’t support the requested operation.

    So what to do?
