How to solve the housing problems in LEDC’s
1) Discourage rural to urban migration
• If the rural areas where people originally lived didn’t have so many problems then people wouldn’t want to leave.
• This means providing jobs for people, improving education & health care, etc.
• It also means better access into the nearest major city for jobs.
• Some countries tried to ban migration!
2) Build satellite towns to discourage population
• Some cities have built large new towns on the edge of the towns so that people have a realistic alternative to living in the city centre.
• This way they can still commute to the city to work.
3) Increase employment
• Jobs can be created in tourism as this demand in LEDC’s is growing. E.g. the beaches in Rio are attracting more and more tourists each year.
• Locals could work in the informal sector making souvenirs, acting as guides, etc.
4) Provide self-help housing
• Here the government provide a concrete base and a small plot of land to the owner.
• As he knows he owns it he is now happy to invest in it.
• Neighbours help each other improve their homes and over time even a second floor may be added.
5) Elect a stable government
• In some countries the government have been able to efficiently charge people taxes.
• This means that the governments have had the funding to build new housing for migrants.
6) Improve transport
• If better public transport routes were in place then more people would be able to commute into the cities and live outside them.
• Sadly this costs a lot of money which the LEDC governments don’t always have.
6) Improve transport
7) Obtain international aid to repair infrastructure (e.g. sewers and education systems)
• If education was readily available this would reduce the population growth rate provide people with better skills to enable them to get jobs and earn more money.
• Some rich MEDC countries offer loans to the poorer countries to enable them to put education systems in place.
8) Involve citizens
• Local authorities have formed Citizens Councils to involve local people.
• This means that they then have a say as to what they want to see changed in their favella, e.g. the roads, the sewage system, etc.
