WHEN SELECTING A HEADLIGHT FOR YOUR BICYCLE THERE ARE TWO MAJOR FACTORS TO CONSIDER:

Where do you ride? How long do you ride?

WHERE DO YOU RIDE? If you ride in a generally well lit area such as a

neighborhood, your main concern is probably just being visible to other traffic.  For this a low-output light is usually ideal

(anything below 300 Lumens).

WHERE DO YOU RIDE? (CONT..)

If you ride along streets or low to moderate bike trails with dedicated lanes and paths, you will need to light your way without blinding other

traffic.  For this a medium-output light is usually ideal (between 400 and 800 Lumens).

WHERE DO YOU RIDE? (CONT..)

If you ride off road or at high speeds in areas with low traffic, you want to be able to see as far ahead as possible.  For this a high-output light is usually ideal (1000 Lumen or more).

WARNING - In much of the US anything over 1100 Lumens is NOT street legal, and should only be used off road when on the high output settings.

HOW LONG DO YOU RIDE?If you maybe do a few laps around the block, you

may want to look at lights with a shorter run time.  These lights can generally have very

compact designs because they don't need to accommodate large batteries.  Typical run times

up to One hour.

HOW LONG DO YOU RIDE? (CONT..)

If you use your bike for short commutes, you may want to look at lights with slightly longer run times.  These lights will typically be a little

larger than the shorter run time lights due to the larger batteries.  Typical run times

between 1-2 hours.

HOW LONG DO YOU RIDE? (CONT..)

If you take long rides, you will want to look for lights that are going to stay on as long as you are or longer.  These lights can either be larger

than the shorter run time lights, or can be about the same size but have an external battery pack.  Typical run times 2.5 hours and up.

So now you've figured out where you're going to ride, and how long you're going to be out.  Here are some tips for what to look at when deciding:

If you're in doubt of whether you should aim higher, then aim higher.  Not sure you need a

light quite that bright?  Using it on a lower setting won't hurt a thing, and you've got the

extra power waiting for when you need it.

Not sure you need it to last that long?  For every person mad that their light quit out halfway through

a ride, there are zero complaining that their light still has juice left.

Lastly, think about what optional features you'd like to have.  Rechargeable battery?

Mount style?  Rugged or sleek design?  Mode selection?
