HOW TO REDUCE DAMAGES OF HURRICANES Hurricanes are extremely powerful storms that cause serious destruction to life as well as
property. United States time and again has been hit by serious storms and has impacted lives of
millions of people. In the year 2008, September 13- 14 ‘Ike’ hit southern U.S., it caused about 30
deaths in Texas, thousands of people had to evacuate their home and millions suffered from
power cuts in Houston alone. Galveston Bay was worst hit by ‘Ike’ knocking out power, water
and sewer lines. Hurricane ‘Ike’ further hit Midwestern U.S., the storm weakened to a tropical
depression. Torrential rain resulted in severe flooding and power loss and about 17 people lost
their lives.
In August 27- 29, 2011, hurricane ‘Irene’
hit East Coast that began as category 3
but was downgraded to category 1 before
impacting Outer Banks of North Carolina.
‘Irene’ cost lives of at least 56 people and
caused an estimated damage of $ 15.6
billion, thereby making it sixth costliest
hurricane hitting U.S. In Oct 29- 30,
2012, hurricane ‘Sandy’ hit the East
Coast. It began as tropical storm but
gained intensity and became a category 2
hurricane, causing 44 deaths. As it neared
Florida, it was downgraded to category 1
but the storm picked up energy on collision with mid-latitude trough. Sandy made landfall in
Atlantic City, N.J., and was again classified as post-tropical cyclone. Sandy is the second
costliest hurricane in U.S. that caused about 100 deaths, approximately 8 million people lost
power and estimated damage was around $ 30 billion.
WAYS TO REDUCE DAMAGE: All those people residing in a hurricane prone area should turn to services and products that help
in reducing damage and prevent further crisis. Adopting essential methods and staying prepared
ahead of time can provide Hurricane Protection:
INSTALLING SHUTTERS- Hurricane shutters prevent damage to interior wall and roof. It is
seen that most damages occur due to failure of windows and doors, thus blowing off the roof.
There are wide ranges of shutters to choose from, one can opt for affordable ones that are easy to
install and operate, whereas elderly or disabled person can opt for automated accordion shutters.

Bahama shutters are used for year-round purpose as they are easy to install when required.
INSTALLING HURRICANE TIE
DOWNS- it is often seen that unprotected
roofs blow off in severe storms. A simple
metal tie-down strap keeps the roof tied to
the top wall of the house thus securing the
roofs. Straps can also be used to tie-down
walls to floors and keep the floor secured
to the foundation.
KEEPING THE YARD CLEAN- Weak tree branches or any sort of item left outside the home
like garbage cans, flowerpots, outside furniture can turn to a dangerous projectile fuelled by
winds. It is therefore essential to trim of the trees and keep the yard free from any sort of debris.
FLOOD PROOF BASEMENTS- Removing obstruction from gutters, extending downspouts and
eliminating low lying areas of soil can prevent water from flooding the basement and
crawlspaces, thus keeping water away from the foundation. Do remember to check the sump
pump operation.
