INTRODUCTION 8. This page intentionally left blank 9. CHAPTER1All About the ASVABWhat Is It? The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, the ASVAB, is a group of 10 subtests that measures your ability in separate career areas and provides an indication of your academic ability. Only four of these subtests-Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge-count toward your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether or not you can enlist in the Armed Forces. THE TEST FORMAT SubtestMinutesQuestions1. General Science11252. Arithmetic Reasoning36303. Word Knowledge11354. You will receive a separate score for each subtest. In addition, your scores on certain subtests will be combined into the following composites: Verbal Ability, Math Ability, and Academic Ability. 3 10. 4IlNTRODUCTlONW H Y SHOULD I TAKE IT? An aptitude battery helps you measure your potential. It can give you a good indication of where your talents lie. By looking at your composite scores and your own personal interests, you can make more intelligent career decisions. For example, the ASVAB : 1. Predicts success in military training schools. 2. Predicts eligibility for various branches of the service. It is required for enlistment in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. (While the Coast Guard has its own exam, it will accept ASVAB results.) Each branch of the military has its own standard of eligibility, so that a person who scores low on the ASVAB may be eligible for one branch of the service, but may not be eligible for another. Once a person is in a branch, the branch can determine career field or job specialty by minimum score requirements. Anyone who achieves an appropriate score in a desired area may get a particular job, as long as the job is available. 3. Predicts success in secondary and post secondary courses and selected civilian career fields. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the result of more than 35 years of military service research. It was specifically designed to identify individual aptitudes. If you are a senior trying to decide what to do after high school, your test scores can help identify fields that you might explore. No matter what your age or inclination, the ASVAB can be valuable to you because it can tell you more about yourself. The ASVAB is not a "PASS" or "FAIL" test. Your scores will only show how well you did in comparison to a representative sample of other students in the United States who took the same tests. You have a lot to gain and nothing to lose when you take the ASVAB.WHEN A N D WHERE CAN I TAKE IT? The ASVAB is administered year-round, and is normally administered at field stations throughout the United States, as well as by mobile teams. Officials of the Military Entrance Processing Command proctor the examination.WORLD WIDE WEB In the near future, information from various parts of the ASVAB program will be available to users of the Internet. Initially, information from various ASVAB Career Exploration Program publications will be made accessible through this medium. HOW DO I APPLY? Ask your guidance counselor to make arrangements for you, or contact the nearest recruiter of the service of your choice. There is no cost for this examination since the Department of Defense wants to tell you about military service opportunities and assist you in career exploration. A M I OBLIGATED TO JOINTHE MILITARY? No! Taking the ASVAB does not obligate you to the military in any way. You are free to use your test results in whatever manner you wish. Additionally, ASVAB results will not be used to enter your name in any draft registration system. You will, however, be required to sign a statement authorizing the release of your test scores to representatives of all the military services, and, like the majority of high school students, if you are an upperclassman, you will probably be contacted by a service member sometime before you graduate. You should expect this whether or not you ever take the ASVAB. Nevertheless, be sure to find out about the many job opportunities with the military services (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy) and the U.S. Coast Guard. Hundreds of thousands of students enter one of the military services each year. Your ASVAB 11. ALL ABOUT THE ASVABI5test scores are good for enlistment purposes for two years after you take the test. Phone or ask a service recruiter to determine whether you would qualify to enter that service (assuming that you meet other qualifications such as age, physical requirements, etc.).W H O SEES M Y TEST SCORES? The ASVAB is used by the Armed Services for recruiting purposes and by your counselor for guidance counseling. Therefore, your test scores will be provided to your counselor and to the recruiting services and the Coast Guard. The personal information you will provide at the time of testing will be maintained on a computer tape and on microfiche records. After two years, individual test scores, identified by student name and social security number, are retained by the Department of Defense only for research purposes to assist in evaluating and updating test materials. Your personal identity information and related test information will not be released to any agency outside of the Department of Defense except the U.S. Coast Guard, which is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation, and your school system. This information will not be used for any purpose other than recruiting by the Armed Services, counseling in your school, and research on test development and personnel measurement. Information on your test scores that is provided to your school will be handled and disposed of in accordance with the policies of the governing state or local school system.WHAT EFFECT DO M Y ASVAB SCORES HAVE? If you plan to enter the military, your scores are very important. Your scores on the four subject tests, the AFQT, determine whether or not you can enter the military at all. Once you have enlisted, your scores on the other subtests determine which military specialties you will be trained for.H O W CAN I USE M Y TEST SCORES? Since ASVAB is a vocational aptitude test, its primary value is in relating your test scores to jobs in the vocational-technical career fields. Whether or not you plan on going on to college, you should be aware of the range of jobs in the trades, what skills and training they require, and how much they can pay. (Some technical careers pay surprisingly well.) See Chapter 16 for a look at how your test scores can help you analyze your job opportunities and potential. COMPUTERIZED ASVAB CAREER EXPLORATION SYSTEM (ACES) For use on school computers, the software automatically matches a student's attributes to occupations. Each student is able to see which occupations have characteristics consistent with his or her own and which may not be such good matches. This system is currently available to schools for use with those students who participate in the ASVAB program. Call your local ASVAB representative for more information.WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON THE DAY OF THE TEST? When you go to the examining station to take the ASVAB, you will be given a booklet with 10 short tests, each consisting of practice questions and actual test questions. You will also be given a separate answer sheet on which to mark your answers, a special pencil to use, and some scratch paper for doing any figuring you may want to do. At the examining station, you will be given complete instructions as to what to do in taking the tests and how much time you have to work on each test. After you have been given the instructions, you will be allowed to practice by answering some sample questions. Finally, you will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions before you start, so that you will understand exactly what you are supposed to do on the tests. 12. 6IINTRODUCTIONHOW TO TAKE THE TEST In 9 of the 10 ASVAB tests, there are four possible answers, labeled A, B, C, and D, for each question. The other test (Test 6) has five possible answers, labeled A, B, C, D, and E. Only one answer in each question is correct or best. Your job is to read each question carefully and decide which of the answers given is the best. Then you record your choice on the separate answer sheet by blackening out the space which has the same number and letter as your choice. In all cases, you are to choose the best answer and mark your answer sheet in the space for it. You must not make any stray marks on the answer sheet because the scoring machine might record those marks as wrong answers. You also should not make any marks in the ASVAB test booklet. In most of the tests, you will have enough time to try every question, and you should try every one. There are two tests (Tests 5 and 6) which you may not finish in the time allowed. Do not worry about them. Most people don't finish them, but be sure to work as quickly and accurately as you can. Do not go on to the next page until the examiner tells you to. Some tests will be easier for you than others, but do the best you can on each. All are important. Your score on each test of the ASVAB will be based on the number of answers you mark correctly. Wrong answers will not count against you. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK To obtain maximum benefit from this book, we recommend the following approach: Read the sections "All About the ASVAB" and "Test-Taking Techniques," which appear on pages 1 and 11. Take Model Examination One. This test, which is in the format used on the actual ASVAB, will give you a clear idea of what the examination is like. Take the test, following all the instructions given, including the time limits. After you complete the test, check your answers and record your scores on the Progress Chart on page 566. Your scores will enable you to see your strengths and weaknesses. You have thus diagnosed the problems you have and can now plan your study time. Use the guide on page 567 to plan your studies. Concentrate your study efforts in your weak areas but review other topics as well. Chapters 4 through 11 provide comprehensive review material. Take Model Examination Two. Before you take it, reread the section "Test-Taking Techniques" on pages 11-14. After you finish this examination, check your answers, review the explained answers, and complete the Progress Chart on page 566. Then restudy the appropriate chapters in accordance with the advice given in the study guide. Take Model Examination Three. After you have finished this examination, follow the same procedure that you followed after finishing Model Examination Two. Continue to restudy material in your weak areas. Take Model Examination Four. Again, follow the same procedure that you followed after finishing each of the other Model Examinations. Your scores should improve with each test as you become familiar with the material and review your weak subjects. Analyze your job opportunities by studying academic composites and occupational composites charts on pages 568 and 569. 13. CHAPTERTest-Taking Techniques Many people incorrectly believe that the amount of time spent studying is the most important factor in test preparation. Efficient study habits are part of the key to successful test preparation. Of course, all else being equal, the amount of time you devote to your studies is a critical factor. But spending time reading is not necessarily studying. If you want to retain what you read, you must develop a system. For example, a person who devotes 60 minutes a day to uninterrupted study in a quiet, private area will generally retain more than someone who puts in twice that time by studying five or six times a day for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.Rules for Studying More EfiTectively We have listed a number of rules for you to follow to increase study time efficiency. If you abide by these rules, you will get the most out of this book.MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF EVERY WORD YOU READ. Your ability to understand what you read is the most important skill needed to pass any test. Therefore, starting now, every time you see a word that you don't fully understand, make certain that you write it down and make note of where you saw it. Then, when you have a chance, look up the meaning of the word in the dictionary. When you think you know what the word means, go back to the reading material which contained the word, and make certain that you fully understand the meaning of the word. Keep a list of all words you don't know, and periodically review them. Also, try to use these words whenever you can in conversation. If you do this faithfully, you will quickly build an extensive vocabulary which will be helpful to you not only when you take this examination, but for the rest of your life. STUDY UNINTERRUPTEDLY FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES. Unless you can study for at least an uninterrupted period of 30 minutes, you should not bother to study at all. It is essential that you concentrate for extended periods of time. When you take the practice examinations, do a complete examination in one sitting, just as you must do at the actual examination. SIMULATE EXAMINATION CONDITIONS WHEN STUDYING. As much as possible, study under the same conditions as those of the examination. Eliminate as many outside interferences as you can. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDED TECHNIQUE FOR ANSWERING MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS. In this chapter we provide an invaluable technique for answering multiple-choice questions. ALWAYS TIME YOURSELF WHEN DOING PRACTICE QUESTIONS. Running out of time on a multiple-choice examination is a tragic error that is easily avoided. Learn, 77 18. 72IINTRODUCTIONthrough practice, to move to the next question after a reasonable period of time has been spent on any one question. When you are doing practice questions, always time yourself so that you will stay within the recommended time limits. CONCENTRATE YOUR STUDY TIME IN YOUR WEAKEST AREAS. Model Examination One will give you an idea of the most difficult question types for you. Though you should spend most of your time improving yourself in these areas, do not ignore the other types of questions. EXERCISE REGULARLY AND STAY IN GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION. Students who are in good physical condition have an advantage over those who are not. It is a wellestablished principle that good physical health improves the ability of the mind to function smoothly and efficiently. ESTABLISH A SCHEDULE FOR STUDYING, AND STICK TO IT. Do not put off studying to those times when you have nothing else to do. Schedule your study time, and try not to let anything else interfere with that schedule. The Test Day 1. Get a good night's rest. Wake up in time to eat a sensible breakfast. 2. Wear comfortable clothes. Include a sweater or light jacket that can be added or removed according to room temperature. 3. Come early. If you are not certain about how to get to the test location or how long the trip will take, check these things out. If you have to rush into the test, worried and out of breath, you will not be in the best condition to take the test.Strategies for Handling Multiple- Choice Questions The remainder of this chapter outlines a very specific test-taking strategy valuable for a multiplechoice examination. Study the technique, practice it; then study it again until you have mastered it.1. READ THE DIRECTIONS. Do not assume that you know what the directions are without reading them. Make sure you read and understand them. Note particularly whether there are differing directions from one section of the examination to another. 2. TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE ANSWER SHEET. The answer sheets on your practice examinations are typical of the one you will see on your exam. However, do not take anything for granted. Review the directions on the answer sheet carefully, and familiarize yourself with its format. 3. BE CAREFUL WHEN MARKING YOUR ANSWERS. Be sure to mark your answers in accordance with the directions on the answer sheet. Be extremely careful that: )you mark only one answer for each question, )you do not make extraneous markings on your answer sheet, )you completely darken the allotted space for the answer you choose, )you erase completely any answer that you wish to change.4. MAKE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN YOU ARE MARKING THE ANSWER TO THE RIGHT QUESTION. Many multiple-choice tests have been failed because of carelessness in this area. All it takes is one mistake. If you put down one answer in the wrong space, you will probably continue the mistake for a number of questions until you realize 19. TEST- TAKING TECHNIQUESI73your error. We recommend that you use the following procedure when marking your answer sheet: )Select your answer, blacken that choice on the answer form, and ask yourself what question number you are working on. )If you select "C" as the answer for question eleven, blacken choice "C" on the answer form, and say to yourself, "C is the answer to question eleven." )Then find the space on your answer sheet for question eleven, and again say "C is the answer to question eleven" as you mark the answer. While this might seem rather elementary and repetitive, after a while it becomes automatic. If followed properly, it guarantees that you will not fail the examination because of a careless mistake. 5. MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THE QUESTION IS ASKING. Read the stem of the question (the part before the choices) very carefully to make certain that you know what the examiner is asking. In fact, it is wise to read it twiceunless you are working on one of the "speeded" subtests. 6. ALWAYS READ ALL THE CHOICES BEFORE YOU SELECT AN ANSWER. Don't make the mistake of falling into the trap that the best distractor, or wrong answer, comes before the correct choice! Read all choices. 7. BE AWARE OF KEY WORDS THAT OFTEN TIP OFF THE CORRECT AND INCORRECT ANSWERS.Absolute Words-Usually a Wrong Choice (They are generally too broad and difficult to defend) never nothing always everyone none nobody all everybody Limiting Words-Usually a Correct Choice usually few some many generally sometimes possible occasionallyonly any often8. NEVER MAKE A CHOICE BASED ON FREQUENCY OF PREVIOUS ANSWERS. Some students pay attention to the pattern of answers when taking the exam. Always answer the question, without regard to what the previous choices have been. 9. ELIMINATE CHOICES YOU KNOW ARE WRONG. As you read through the choices, eliminate any choice you know is wrong. If you eliminate all but one of the choices, the remaining choice should be the answer. Read the choice one more time to satisfy yourself, and blacken its letter designation (if you still feel it is the best answer) on the answer sheet. If you were not able to narrow the choices to one, many times, the second time you read the remaining choices, the answer is clear. 10. SKIP OVER QUESTIONS THAT GIVE YOU TROUBLE. The first time through the examination be certain not to dwell too long on any one question. Simply skip the question after blackening any answer on the answer sheet (to keep your answers from getting out of sequence), and go to the next question. Circle the question number in your test booklet so that you can go back to it if you have time. 11. RETURN TO THE QUESTIONS YOU SKIPPED IN A SUBTEST AFTER YOU FINISH THAT PORTION OF THE EXAMINATION. Once you have answered all of the questions you were sure of in a subtest of the examination, check the time remaining. If time permits, return to each question you did not answer and reread the stem and the choices. If the answer is still not clear and you are running out of time, then make an "edu- 20. 74 IlNTRODUCTlONcated guess" among those choices. When making an "educated guess," follow the guidelines that are presented in Strategy 13. 12. NEVER LEAVE QUESTIONS UNANSWERED SINCE THERE IS NO PENALTY FOR WRONG ANSWERS. 13. RULES FOR MAKING AN "EDUCATED GUESS." Your chances of picking the correct answer to questions you are not sure of will be significantly increased if you use the following rules: )Never consider answer choices that you have already eliminated. (See Strategy 9.) )Be aware of key words that give you clues as to which answer might be right or wrong. (See Strategy 7.) )If two choices have a conflicting meaning, one of them is probably the correct answer. And, if two choices are too close in meaning, probably neither is correct. )If all else fails and you have to make an outright guess at more than one question, guess the same lettered choice for each question. The odds are that you will pick up some valuable points.14. BE VERY RELUCTANT TO CHANGE ANSWERS. Unless you have a very good reason, do not change an answer once you have chosen it. Studies have shown that all too often people change their answer from the right one to the wrong one. 21. DIAGNOS~ YOUR PROBLEM 22. This page intentionally left blank 23. On some city streets and in heavy traffic, twenty miles per hour could be too fast. On a superhighway, 35 miles per hour could be too slow. Of course, a good driver must follow the speed limit, but he must also use good judgment. The "right" speed will vary by the number of cars, surface of the road, and the visibility. The general theme of this passage is that a good driver: A drives at 35 miles an hour. B adjusts to different driving conditions. C always drives at the same speed.
