How to Mentor, Motivate & Advance Your People

Values-Based Mentoring October 3, 2020

Presented by

Rick Griggs Griggs Achievement Training & Retreats

Fort Collins, Colorado

Welcome

Successful mentoring comes from a superior, an internal veteran or an external expert. This powerful session pulls from several Griggs courses and offers skills to motivate and advance employees for success in the organization AND in their broader careers. Attendees will learn to set parameters from the mission and vision of the organization while offering mentees personal, business and career skills.

Here’s to a great session!

Mission & Vision Here we go again. You’ve heard about the importance of the mission and vision of the organization for years. My advice is to merge the mission and vision into one simple concept. Decide the major purpose of the organization and then call it what you want.

Mission + Vision = Purpose

Preparing Yourself to Mentor Here are ways to prepare yourself to mentor a person within a specific organization. This assumes that you (the mentor) have a vested interest in the health and success of the group. This may be from the inside or as an engaged external consultant.

1. Re-examine your personal successes and professional milestones.

2. Read at least a book a month (to the very last page).

3. Clarify the current goal or purpose of the organization.

4. Set up a notebook system for recording and reviewing progress.

5. Review and study the values (implicit or explicit) of the team.

Starting the Mentoring Sessions Mentoring succeeds more often when both individuals want to be in the process and want it to produce results. Every mentor wants to work with someone who jumps at the chance to be involved, initiates activities and participates in lively conversations. This phase should start with written aims and objectives for the process.

1. Set a standard day and time with contingencies.

2. Discuss the required or expected amount of confidentiality.

3. Clarify and record what the mentee would like to accomplish.

4. Discuss and agree on the types and amount of reading and ‘homework.’

5. During early sessions begin a discussion around the values of the organization.

Readjusting Mentoring Sessions Something will change and require your sessions to adapt. Mentoring relationships that fail to adapt will end. It may be that the community at large experiences an upheaval (pandemic) or the practice makes major changes (new hiring; restructuring). Sometimes the mentee changes positions or gets promoted.

1. Review or edit the original goals of the mentee.

2. Re-direct analysis and advice when the organization changes direction.

3. Allow mentee to adjust and recover from major changes and transitions.

4. Take a session to discuss the mentee’s recent successes and achievements.

5. Take time off until the mentee initiates the will and desire to continue.

When to End Mentoring A useful format is to consider ‘fading’ sessions than outright ending them. Unfortunately, many fruitful relationships between mentor and mentee end due to an unorganized routine without specific and regular scheduled sessions. This can work but employees at the beginning and in the middle of their careers benefit most with regular sessions. When it’s time to end make it gradual rather than abrupt.

1. If possible, set an ending time months in advance.

2. Suggest books (and articles) for reading months out into the future.

3. Revisit successes and progress multiple times.

4. Have the mentee list remaining weak areas and continued need for improvement.

5. Pick a specific week or day for a short check-in.
