HOW TO MEMORISE VOCABULARY AND NOT FORGET IT!
LANGUAGE LEARNING FOUNDATIONS
Iwillteachyoualanguage.com
In this module you will learn:
Why you should focus on vocabulary building
What vocabulary you should learn
Software that can help you
Effective daily habits
1. Why you should focus on vocabulary building
You can’t speak
You can’t understand
If you don’t know the words…
…it really is that simple!
When you learn a new language, vocabulary building is your only
goal for the first 6 months
2. What vocabulary should I learn?
Four main sources:
From your textbook dialogues 1
2 From your environment (eg. train station, TV, movies, street signs)
3 From your teacher/tutor/exchange partner
4 Proactively thinking what you want to learn
They’re all great!
Here’s your daily dose
Supplemented with these
“The most effective vocab-building strategy is to carefully choose what vocabulary you
actually want to learn!”
…from Olly
Repetition and emotion are the foundations of memory
In other words: Learn what matters to you (emotion)
1
2 Review it often (repetition)
You need to create the opportunities for this
Remember your “why”
from module 1?
3. Software to help you
SRS – Spaced Repetition Software
Spaced-repetition software
Keep all new vocabulary in one place
Review difficult items more frequently
Make learning more efficient
All you have to do is put in the time
Flashcards Deluxe
Anki
Memrise
Options:
“Flashcards Deluxe is the simplest, most user-
friendly and powerful app out there. You’ll be up-and-running in under
60 seconds.” …from Olly
4. Effective daily habits
Repetition is the foundation
Commit to a daily minimum of flashcard study 1
2 5 minutes is enough
3 You can’t memorise everything
…so it comes back to being very selective about what you choose to learn in the first place.
Above all…
Make reviewing vocabulary part of your daily routine.
Stick with it and let time do the work.
THE LESSON Building your vocabulary is the most important thing for the first six months. Make it part of your daily routine and keep it up over time.
