Sculpey Cabochon Mandrel
Judy Larson
Save a ton of cash when you make your own cabochon mandrels.
Materials:
Sculpey polymer clay
Cabochon
Tools:
Roller
Two 3/8” mandrels
4” ceramic tile
Knife
Oven
Hot pads
Ultra fine point Sharpie marker
Directions:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 275 degrees.
Step 2: Place a piece of polymer clay on the center of the tile
between the two 3/8” mandrel.
Step 3: Roll out the clay until the roller touches the two mandrels.
This will be the correct thickness. Set the roller and mandrels
aside.
Step 4: Place the cabochon on the polymer clay. Make an exact 90
degree cut around the cabochon through the polymer clay. Remove
the excess clay. Remove the cabochon.
Step 5: Clean up the edges of the
polymer clay, if needed.
Step 6: Place the tile with the polymer clay in the oven and bake for 40 minutes.
Step 7: While the clay is baking, trace the outline of the cabochon on a piece of paper. Fold the paper in half
lengthwise and crosswise, matching the drawn lines. Mark those lines on the paper.
Step 8: Remove the tile with the clay from the oven and let cool.
Step 9: Place the baked clay mandrel on the template created in Step 7. Transfer the lines to the mandrel.
Mark the size on the top of the mandrel.
